Know the Threats to Commercial Fishing Vessel Stability

Knowing the "feel" of your commercial fishing vessel is often not enough. Understanding the principals of stability while fishing is therefore essential.
What are the threats to vessel stability? This video, part of Fish Safe's Safe at Sea video series discusses many of these major threats including the following: Vessel modifications, overloading, water tight integrity, free surface effect and more.

I was on a old 95 foot wooden scalloper and we used 50 gallon barrels full of sea water that we would switch from side to side as needed

There have been fishermen in the Rivers of our country that have allowed greed to affect their better judgement. Numerous deaths have occurred when overloading shad netting in those relatively small boats normally used. When a loaded barge or ship passes by it will always bring a wake which will cause a rapid lift and subsequent rapid fall. The need for a big catch clouds judgement and water doesn’t have that cold to cause hypothermia and death.

Empty crab boats with a deck load of traps have to be the most dangerous.

When it comes to sealed deck fishing vessels, the more ballast added to the bottom of the boat the better. As the fish hold fills the overall stability of the boat improves, well as long as the load isn't able to shift. My boat stability just got better and better with more fish in the hold. It's not rocket science. An empty fish boat is an accident waiting to happen.
