Thanks! Strength/weakness lists really help me pick plants based on my lifestyle.
My two biggest issues are: A) Giving them enough light to induce flowering without burning the leaves, and B) the brittleness of the roots when repotting. Other than that, I love the big floofy hybrids and species - especially the coerulea types.

I got a bellina coerulea and it’s so pretty my first of this colour! 😭🙏🏼💓
Great video. Can you do this for other types of orchids? Love the format. Waiting for my Frances Fox to finally flower. Bought it last year, most of the roots died and now growing well.
Danny, you are the Lord of the Cattleyas! If a cattleya is just beautiful, you make it look gorgeous! 🏵️🌺
I adore my Cattleyas! I'm looking into Tolumnias now...I'd like at least one.
i have both in the video.. multiple new growth each year and multiple flowering each year.. very hardy 👍❤️
This is such an interesting format!!! So useful, please keep it up with other species
I've got a lot of cymbidium orchids and some phylonopsis orchids. I just bought my first cattleya so goodluck to me. But my cymbidium is blooming at the moment and it's so beautiful. We just start our spring season in Australia
I recommend small Potinara hybrids for cats. And then, creating a greenhouse environment to mimic exactly what they need. That can be a large terrarium with all the necessities. You'll see many people building terrariums from scratch on youtube.
Hello Danny! I currently have 2 brassavolas (little stars & yellow bird). At first I did struggle with them until I watched your care videos and they are now healthy. As long as they are healthy, I can wait for them to bloom. Your videos has helped me greatly and I'm seeing results (3 Phalaenopsis orchids has bloomed in my care thus far 😁) but most importantly, all of my orchids are healthy. Keep doing what you are doing, you are a blessing! Thanks

I hope you can make a video for dividing cattleya, what to expect.
Hi Danny, thanks for your video. very interresting. I have 7 cattleyas in my little collection ( nearly 30 orchids) in fact, many of them was laelias when I bought them and now this orchids are classifified in the cattleya genus ... the joy of botany. so I have 3 rupiculous cattleyas, 2 cattleyas purpurata. all are very vigourous and make 2 or 3 new growth by year. I have no issues whith them, no pest attacks even on sheats and new growth ( thrips and reds spiders prefer my dendrobiums and my epidendrums) but flowering is very difficult to obtain. the rupuculous get blooming only if I put them closely under artificial light. and I have never seen a bud on my 2 cattleyas purpurata. the two others cats are : - a cattleya perrini wich is not in good condition . he lost two pseudobulbs and five leaves this year. the last leafy pseudobulb is shrived but this plant have a new growth and the roots seems to be ok. I don't understand what's happening . and the last one, a hybrid called Laeliocattleya kazuko takamatsu 'seto blue' (C. warnerii × Laeliocattleya 'Mini Purple'). I bought it in 2016 in an orchid show. it was in bloom and really beautiful. easy to grow, easy to bloom.. until he has lost his roots in summer 2020 probably because i moved from the north of france to the south and forgot to repot it ( I lost 11 orchids when I moved). the roots suffocate in the sphagnum moss too degraded and too compacted . so in fall 2020, I put the plant in ICU... and a new growth started slowly to grow . in january 2021 , the first root appear, and an other new growth ... I was very happy, my plant seems to be saved. but in march, the roots and the growths stopped to grow the root tips and the sheats of the growths turning brown. I don't know why, so I've immediatly stop to watering and let it dry ( this cattleya are really drought tolerant because I didn't watering it for many many weeks) In august 2022, I' ve changed the moss and restarted watering. ..and the brown growth restart slowly to grow... now I'm waiting for the new set of root and I hope that root growing are ok this year.
Hey Danny, lovely video, thanks for this. I have had cattleya for over a year now. It gives me three to four new psedobulbs every year, lots of leaves n good roots. Sadly it is not flowering even though it is a mature orchid. What am I missing here???
Thank you for all the tips, useful, indeed! A couple of questions, please: 1. Is dried and crushed oak leaf + decayed oak wood a good medium to pot cattleya in? 2. Often one comes across brown, and slightly soft roots on cattleya during repotting. They are not totally dry just a bit squishy when pressed. Are these still useful to the plant or need to be snipped off?
Thank you so much! I recently got another cattleya it says “large lavender king of orchids cattleya” but I look it up and don’t see anything close to the photo on the tag, maybe I just need to wait for him to bloom… I assume cattleya hybrids usually have no ID?
Dani, I did see your video on mini-phals, which makes me wonder if there are mini-catts too (I have only a 3" wide kitchen window sill) ?
I am a big lover of Brassavolas. I am from Argentina but living in Germany, and I am recollecting some of my orchids native to Argentina (which I used to have). I haven't been able to get a find a place that sells B. tuberculata (if anyone knows, please let me know). but I got a B. perrinii which is quite close. It's doing very well so I have high hopes for flowers soon. I also love their weird shapes. My mom used to think the Brassavola was a dead plant every time she visited. I don't think you have a lisp with the retainer btw :D

Kopf-Orchideen and Hennis have one. I know Kopf and in my opinion this vendor has the best quality (have bought from other companies too, so I have a comparison). Many regards and viel Glück!

@@annareiter952 Thank you
I love Cattleya, I wish I had room for more. I only have the room on my kitchen windowsill, so I have like 7 plants and that's all I have room for. I don't really like the idea of growing them all over my home with artificial light so I am limited to my kitchen window. Can't grow them outdoors in my climate zone. I have yet to figure out how to get more than 2 flowers to bloom from the same bulb. I know these plants can bloom more than just 2 flowers per bulb but that's all I normally succeed in getting. I've tried different percentages of fertilizers, different fertilizer frequencies, more diluted, less diluted making sure never to burn the roots. Almost always just 2 flowers per bulb. Why..... 😞
Thanks i have always been watching your videos.

Firstly, many - if not most - Cattleyas bloom only once per year, and often at a specific time. Secondly, the plant needs to be mature enough to bloom. Thirdly, Cattleyas need a lot of light to bloom. In the home the challenge is that the leaves can overheat in direct sun because there is often to little air movement to cool them down. Some growers use fans. Don't let this discourage you - some of the most spectacular orchids are to be found in the Cattleya alliance, and they are worth the effort.
Such Interesting video!! A pity you don’t show us your face. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

Ah yes, Miss Orchid Girl remains shrouded in mystery - two hands, a sweet voice, and a fountain of orchid knowledge. To me, the voice is enough to create a pleasant and relatable orchid experience, though.
