KNOTS LANDING: Season 3 (1981-82) Cliffhanger (Valene Leaves Gary - Extended Version)
This is the final scene from "Living Dangerously", the third season cliffhanger finale for the 1979-93 CBS drama "Knots Landing", which was a spinoff of the equally popular 1978-91 drama "Dallas". This was the 22nd and final episode of the third season (and 53rd overall). The episode originally aired Thursday, May 6.1982.
For the previous two weeks, recovering alcoholic car salesman Garrison "Gary" Ewing (Ted Shackelford) has been embroiled in a steamy affair with his gorgeous neighbor Abby Fairgate Cunninghman (Donna Mills), the sister of his deceased boss Sid. Sid's widow Karen (Michele Lee) has discovered the affair, as well as Gary's mother in law Lilimae Clements (Julie Harris).
They reluctantly try to keep it a secret from Gary's wife Valene (Joan Van Ark). But unfortunately, she discovers the truth for herself when Gary misses a party to celebrate the release of her book "Capricorn Crude", a book that contains a fictionalized account of all the Ewing family scandals. Gary is too busy fooling around with Abby to support Val in her venture, also upset at the fact that she's spilling all of the Ewing family tea. Karen confronts both Gary and Abby when Val walks in and sees the truth for herself.
This scene features Val returning to her and Gary's house to pack up her belongings as Gary rushes home to talk to her. She loads her stuff into the car and drives off from the cul-de-sac, with a remorseful, distraught Gary running behind, too late to stop her.

But unlike Gary, J.R. knew how to stand up and fight. Gary was always a weak, whiny coward, and Valene was too good for him. Valene became an author, and Gary was just Gary.

I don't what made me more mad about this show. Abby causing Gary & Val to break up or the fact that it took the writers to wait till season 12 to get them back together.

It shows that JR wasn't the cause of all of what went wrong with Gary and Val's marriage.

It was the soap that got me into liking soaps, my family would watch this, and then I got hooked , I seen I think it was about season 5 or 6 and was hooked all the way to the end, my favorite scene still is when Jill tries to kill Val I think was season 9.

He felt Karen wouldn't bring Valene to sequence too expose their affair but lilmae blackmailed too tell.
I loved this storyline which I read was suggested to the writers by Joan Van Ark and Donna Mills. You always knew they’d eventually get back together and the writers kept you tuned in for years with all the twists and turns of a soap opera before it finally happened. Great show and I miss my Thursday nights watching it.
Wish I could see more of this. He kills me with the "WE HAVE TO TALK" bs.... lol. No. No we don't.

In real life Donna Mills and Joan Van Ark were very closed friends. Almost like sisters.
Gary wasn't only addicted to alcohol, he was also addicted to adrenaline. Though he was attracted to Abby I think the real appeal for him was seeing how far he could take their illicit affair without getting caught.

Very astute observation
Gary was so stupid. Abby only wanted Gary for the money he would inherit. Abby cheated on Gary and connived behind his back. Valene was the only woman who truly loved and cared for Gary through all of his bullshit. Sadly, it took Gary 7 years to figure this out. It did make for good drama, though.

May I add that Gary did also cheat on Abby lol He smashed both Cathy, Jill, AND Val during his marriage to Abby lol So she wasn’t the only one creeping! Lol

In the same situation as Kenny, Gary had an affair with Abby, which continued the soap nostalgia of the decade. It actually served Gary right... to an extent, when the storyline was included to hype up the ratings, for the season. On "Dallas" he was Miss Ellie's favorite, who was rarely seen with his brothers & other family members, and was married to Val, on "Knots Landing," he was Karen's friend, who later broke up with Val, and continued being a ladies' man, until he got Val back.

Val should have stayed and throwed his stuff out.
Gary was such a complicated guy to like. You hated him when he was with Val. You liked him when he was with abby and like both Gary and val when they were together again. You cheered him when he beat the shit out of vals husband, Danny Woleska...kudos to the writers in keeping him moving. The same was not said of his brother Bobby.
I've always wondered where that neighborhood was that was shown during the end credits, cuz it's definitely not the fictitious Sea View Circle. I've been to the cul-de-sac in real life and it's nowhere near the ocean, it's in the San Gabriel Valley.

No, they moved back in after Richard's nervous breakdown where he held them at gunpoint. She asked him to leave after their second son Daniel was born, but he came back and took the boys when Laura died.

Gary wasn't sorry he did it (cheating with Abby), he was sorry he was stupid enough to get caught. Then he leaves Val, marries Abby and Abby screws him over. lol Talk about getting what's coming to you. lol
