Knoebels Black Diamond Report - 2011

On October 14th, 2011, Bill and Seph Cherkasky traveled to Knoebels Amusement Resort in Elysburg, PA to check out the reincarnation of one of their favorite childhood rides. After two years of hard work, the Knoebel's rebuilt the former Golden Nugget Mine Ride from Wildwood, NJ as the Black Diamond. This 7 minute report includes an interview with Dick Knoebel, president and co-manager of the park.

The amusement industry is so lucky to have an individual like Dick Knoebel. Not many park owners would consider saving old one of a kind rides like Knoebels . Add this to their monumental movement of the Rocket coaster at Playland Park in San Antonio Texas and the rebirth of the 1930's Flying Turns wooden bobsled rides .

When we heard about this we made our first trip to Knoebels. My wife and I loved the Golden Nugget and we're so happy it got a second life. You can tell it's the same layout. We say we're going to visit our old friend when we make the trip now. Thank you Knobels.

Their wooden coaster Phoenix was rescued from a closed park in San Antonio Texas called Playland Park. It was called the Rocket.

My 8 yr old loves Black Diamond, we were there Friday Oct 13th 2023, and we must have rode it 10x in the first hour of the park being open (6-10) we probably did an additional 5 rides throughout the night. I do wish they didn't trim the drops as much but it is a fun family ride and my 8yr old took a new interest in learning about mining because of this ride. Thank You Dick Knoebel

Hunts pier was a great place in the 70's and 80's its a shame Moreys could not have made the investment in this icon or the pier. Congrats to Knoebels its a great place theres a real old school feel to the park (love that) and the owners are very nice people..

I rode the Golden Nugget in Wildwood, NJ for many years and can’t wait to see how Knoebels has brought it back to life. We’re making it a point to go this year and check it out!

I wish Knoebels could get their hands on the blueprints to the former “Castle Dracula” from Wildwood, too! It tragically burned down in 2005, but it was a PHENOMENAL attraction. The amusement was divided in 2 parts. Its guests could choose between either the upper “walk through” of the castle proper, or the the lower “boat ride” through the haunted moat. The boat ride was my favorite because it road so slowly (must’ve lasted at least 20-30 minutes) through a creepy, foggy most through cavernous dungeons, a bloody morgue, shipwrecked skeletons, etc. KZread it! It really was a fantastic attraction that I’ve never seen anywhere else. It deserves to be RESURRECTED! 😱😱

Well...since it brunt down the Knoebels can't really get their hands on it. They already have a top-notch haunted house when most amusement parks got rid of their dark rides. Knoebels is more into ride-through dark attractions since they require fewer staff members to run.

I've lived in Pennsylvania my whole life but studied the relocation. The Morey's also didn't want to make it happen. They abandoned the ride for almost ten years and instead of upgrading the building (asbestos removal) they demolished it. Thankfully Dick realized the value of historic rides and didn't allow them to wipe out another classic.

If I’m no mistaken I think he refused to sell to the moreys. I believe he got it through a straw purchase
