It feels like there wasn’t enough of a convincing argument or effort made by the captors to prove that what they were doing was real. The captives were right to resist to the end because that was logical for them to do in their situation, but the film ending without any resolution or even just some dumb twist really made it disappointing. They were compelled to be there by some mysterious higher power but they couldn’t be assed to be convincing.

To me, the issue with this movie seems to be that it really doesn’t have anything to say beyond a very bland and wafer thin message about the cruelty vs inherent worth of humanity. One that is undercut by the couple literally having no other option at the end. Either one of them sacrifices themselves or the three of them soon perish in the remains of the world ravished by apocalypse. This is not a character coming to see the value and good in the people around them, this is a person forced to murder their loved one while an omnicidal monster of a god holds the rest of the world hostage. In a dark way that may have been interesting plot if leaned into, but no it’s hand waved away as “a divine plan”. No real character arcs and nothing new said.

I couldn't agree more. The impetus for the plot and architect of the scenario is entirely absent from the film. I think that, as you said, if you leaned into you could make it work and be pretty interesting actually, but instead there is this implicit assumption that there is no agency or interaction on the part of that evil force.

I feel like it would have been more interesting if it turned out their captors had also refused to make a sacrifice. The twist could have been that they are attempting to weasels their way out of the choice themselves by convincing others to do what they couldn’t/can’t. Maybe the original visions they received were different and the captors themselves set things in motion due to their own selfishness and bad decisions.

    M. night is an excellent story teller and phenomenal director. He doesn't get the credit. Anyway, the point of his movies are to tell unique stories...you come out enjoying his work. It's doesn't always has to be same. the point is is tells you a stories...in some cases he is uniquely surprising the audience the end and in some cases like The Happening and Knock At The Cabin...he is trying to make a point...which is to be nice to mother nature (The Happening) and be nice to other human beings (Knock At The Cabin). Mr. Shyamalan is trying to do his part and be some of hist stories about humanity and teaching us lesson. People nit pick about his movies but when it comes to movies like Batman and Superman...man who can fly and die and come back to life...now these are ridiculous stories are OK to them.

I think this movie was of course not as psychologically suspenseful and engagingly thrilling as The Sixth Sense, but definitely not as much of a WTF letdown like The Happening. This film does at least visually represent different aspects of human nature, such as sacrifice versus selfishness. And it also shows how inherent bias and traumatic experiences can not only shape our world view, but our own moral compass. 💕

I think the twist WAS that there wasnt a twist. You go into a shamalan movie expecting ur expectations to be subverted, only to find out everything youve been told throughout the movie is exactly as it has been stated.

I totally disagree with this KZreadr. I’m glad there is no gimmicky plot twist. Many of his prior movies failed because the twists were not as impactful as Sixth Sense. So, I’m glad he is just making a straight drama/thriller

I would definitely consider this upper-tier Shyamalan, I don't think it's his best work but it's pretty close. I loved how the first two acts are pretty much the same as the book, the ending was however Shyamalan's re-write, and I'm glad it just wasn't too crazy.

SPOILERS Personally, I enjoyed the movie. Every single actor in it is great at portraying what their characters are supposed to be feeling. The family trio had great chemistry together, and so did the four strangers with one another. Tbh tho, I feel like it would've been even better of an ending if after Eric died and Andrew went to be with Wen in the treehouse, if the movie just ended then, and you just had to question if it was all real or truly just a home invasion.

The scar is a cleft pallet. That has to be some sort of metaphor as it’s pretty common for people in that area to either give those babies away via adoption, or late term plan B. Hidden knife?…… lol I came here to look for the twist that I thought I must’ve missed. So, the twist is, no twist? He must think he’s playing 4d chess, meanwhile I’d just rather watch the Rise of Gru again.

I enjoyed d film. It made me question what choice i wud make if i was in d same situation. But like someone had mentioned below, the book ending is better. More haunting? This movie is similar to the trolley problem, which in this case is whether saving your family is more important or is saving humanity-a bunch of strangers you dont know-is more important.
