    I had such a great time watching Knives Out. It far surpassed my expectations. I'm used to Hollywood making a hash of these kinds of stories, but it was brilliant. I even stopped trying to work out who and how (this NEVER happens to me) and just sat back and enjoyed myself. The settings and cinematography were so good, too. Movie of the year for me.

    I saw it today. Amazing movie, so rare an original screenplay like this one nowadays. Loved the acting of everyone but especially Daniel Craig, Ana de Armas, Chris Evans and Jamie Lee. I suspected of two or three characters but really I wasn't sure till the big reveal. And that metaphor with the donuts omg so funny!

    What a great video! I saw the movie the other day and figured out the murderer, but not by your rational methods, just by something said early in the film. Your explanation of motives and characters in mysteries is top notch!

    I really enjoyed this movie as well. I like the way Rian Johnson does genre films where he pays tribute to the genre, but twists it ever so slightly to feel a bit fresh and modern. I really loved the first half of this film and the scenes between Christopher Plummer and Marta were exceptional. I will say that I didn't enjoy the second half as much after the will is read. I wish it had stayed within the house or on the grounds and that we got more out of the supporting cast. Jamie Lee-Curtis was great (her line read of "Thank you. That means a lot" was superb) and Toni Colette is a great actress and I felt they didn't have enough to do in this. The first half sets up some quirky, interesting characters, but doesn't do much with them in the second half. And while I liked the political nature of the film, I wish it was less heavy-handed with it. I didn't need Ransom shouting the movie's message in my face at the end. Like, I got it. Let me feel smart that I figured it out on my own. Other than that, a really solid film that I'll have to watch again to pick up all the little clues and hints along the way.

    Yeah, that's always the down side of having an ensemble filled with great actors/stars--- you always are left wanting a little more from some of them. I definitely wish there had been even more for JLC and Plummer!

    I thought it was a highly entertaining jaunt to the movies!! I particularly like how the director\writer made me question how smart Benoit Bland was in the middle of the movie. And just admit I was taken in by the suicide story and was concerned how Marta and her family were going to survive intact! With the ending, I felt that what had happened was the family had a new matriarch to watch over them along with a few new members! And I loved how Jamie Lee Curtis found out about her husband's infidelity!! Great video!!

    The movie sounds interesting, I definitely need to check it out.😁 I also wished the movie industry would concentrate more on the story and less on the showy, expensive special effects (after all my favourites movies are Seven Samurai and 12 Angry Men, which use pretty much no special effects).

    Honesty, I think the film was brilliant. I knew they wanted us to think it's Chris Evans, so I thought it was someone like Michael Shannon. But they reverse reverse psychologied us. It was the most obvious person.

    I LOVED this movie. Certainly in my top 5 of the year. I was highly entertained by the acting and the humour. It is also very re-watchable movie. I am also a veteran reader of detective stories (30+ years). I didn't get it early on, but maybe around the middle. I also guessed key part of the how. Mara- I also love closed locations murder mysteries (closed rooms are even better). What would you recommend? Or let me know if you have already done a video.

    The cast was the main draw for me. I did enjoy it, but thought it was a little convoluted. You should watch the original Sleuth with Laurence Olivier and Michael Caine. The setting was as wonderful as the house in Knives Out. I haven’t seen the movie in years, and I hope it’s as good as I remember it.

    I loved Brick and I loved this one, too. I'd love to see a resurgence of this genre in cinema! Spoilers Below: I'm left with one big question that was never resolved in this movie, though: What about Granny? Okay, so maybe he assumed he'd outlive her and that's why he left everything to Marta with no provision for her. But did I miss a bit where he asked Marta to take care of her? Or was he mad at her, too, for some reason? And if not, do you think Marta will take care of her? Of course, it's possible I missed something and should just go watch it again. Oh shuckydarns. ;-)

  • @bookslikewhoa

    @bookslikewhoa

    Oh good question-- I guess for Granny, my guess would be that he had already settled a good chunk of change on her? Same for the grandkids-- my guess would be that there were trust funds set up at the time they were born that they'll get eventually. My inference on Ransom is that the reason he is desperate for an inheritance is because he's blown through the trust money he came into already

    I’m glad you enjoyed it. I didn’t as much. ***Possible Spoilers*** The reveal of certain information early on made the film drag for me until the end. A lot of the actors had nothing to do (I have no idea why Lakieth Stanfield would do this film, he was wasted) and even Daniel Craig is not in it as much as one would think. I do like how it took the piss out of both sides of the political aisle and how class is more of a division in our country. I do think it ended well and looking back at all the clues, there aren’t really any holes in the plot. It was well structured in that regard but man did it drag in the middle and would not be able to sit through again.

    SPOILERS (and a too long comment) . . . . . . . . . . . . Listen, Ransom's final monologue at Marta was way too real! His presumption that he "deserves" anything and then the bit about his "ancestral home." Him saying that to a Latina woman was a lot. The script was too good. I also really thought Harlan was orchestrating everything, and idk if I wanted that because it would have been fun or because I wanted more Christopher Plummer.... I saw this movie with the only other theater goers being older white people in Texas so presumably extremely conservative, and let me tell you that added a whole new layer to the experience. Their reaction to so many moments were baffling or hilarious. Like every time they mentioned "Nazi boy" they got so huffy, but any mention of sjws or communism had them rolling. There were two couples who walked out. 1 after the reveal that marta's mom was an illegal immigrant. And the other after the argument at the party about real world political stuff. It was a fascinating experience lol

    Wow... that's wild! Yeah, I saw it in TN so a lot of the same kind of viewpoints. I didn't see anyone getting too huffy on the politics, but I think before that stuff happened, the audience was really bought in. And YES, that line about his "ancestral home" and the Pakistani realtor had me rolling :D

    It’s was alright. I don’t think I liked it as much as you did but I enjoyed it. I think you’re right about supporting them when they’re made so more come along later. Christopher Plummer didn’t have a lot of screen time and that’s too bad since he’s great. Daniel Craig was good and I liked the character. I liked the young woman Marta but the vomit thing was dumb and a little gross to me. I knew who did it half-way through (more screen time and shifty) also but it didn’t spoil the ending. It was pretty satisfying. Murder mysteries don’t have to be “woke” to me and of course the right blew up how nasty some of the white people were to Marta and her family. I hate this time in our culture. Everything is so divided.

    bookslikewhoa I agree 100%. This isn’t new stuff but I felt like Rian Johnson gave right-wing outlets things to bitch and moan about and I’m over it. I thought we were the snowflakes? The way Jamie Lee is out there promoting this I thought she’d have a lot more screen time.
