2) Flicking: Wrapping the yarn through your right fingers, and picking up the strand with the left needle with a quick "flick".
3) Continental: Wrapping the yarn through your left fingers, and picking up the strand with the right needle to pick up the yarn.

I’m a new knitter and started out learning Continental style since I’m a crocheter and it felt very comfortable. But my knitting was SO tight. It wasn’t until I tried Norwegian style, a specific style of Continental knitting, that my tension loosened up. Norwegian style picks the yarn off the index finger and it forced me to relax my loop open enough to go *way over there* to grab the yarn. It also turned my palms up toward my face, which relaxed my shoulders. I actually went back to Continental style but now I’ve incorporated many elements of the Norwegian style and my tension is no longer an issue.

Thank you for pointing out that I have to push the right needle all the way through before taking the stitch off the left needle. I think this is what I am doing wrong as a beginner knitter

I am new, and guilty of both! It’s disappointing because I want my work to be even and pretty. I will keep on trying.

I am trying to figure out why only my knit stitches are too tight. My purl stitches are great with tension. I don’t really hold much tension at all on my yarn.
