I totally understand the shaming aspect of purchasing yarn and accessories. My husband is very good at shaming me about my hobby. I agree that I don’t want to be ashamed because I do use the yarn but I couldn’t possibly use it all in my lifetime. I’m 75 and retired and knitting really helps me deal with the aging process. Your podcast helped me feel better about my acquisitions ❤

So true! I am sorry you are made to feel bad. I think as women we try to justify what makes us feel good. I tell my husband I don't spend as much as. $200/week therapy session would cost and I get a warm sweater to boot. lol

Oh, so glad to see your post! I'm 66 and I feel the same, like I don't want to leave my kids with a ton of yarn to deal with! I content myself with knitting for others, a legacy of love for all my children, their spouses and grandchildren! My hands are no longer the best, but I do knit every day!❤😊

I wish husbands who shame their wives about knitting would learn that knitting is more than a hobby-it is physical , mental and emotional therapy. While the knitter benefits these ways, we also are creating something of a legacy for our children to cherish when we are gone. My dear husband is an enabler and if anything encourages me. It is me who looks at my stash and thinks “I gotta stop buying yarn”

I’m watching your podcast about the clumps of dog hair you’re finding on your walk…..well, back in the late 1990’s I had a beautiful rescue dog named Flicka…she was probably golden retriever and husky mix with a beautiful creamy undercoat….I save her fur after brushing and put it in a grocery bag…thinking maybe someone could spin this fur into yarn? Spinning your own yarn was certainly not as popular as today. In the spring I attended Shepherd’s Harvest Wool Festival at the Washington County, Minnesota fair grounds and what did I find….a woman who would spin my dog fur! I went home got the grocery bag of fur and rushed back to her booth. We exchanged names and numbers and a month or so later I met up with her and had a beautiful hank of “Flicka” yarn. Tip…she spun the fur with some sheep fleese of the same color and it was beautiful….however, the knitted cowl I made with the Flicka yarn shed just like the dog! Be aware…I warned you!😀 The people I worked with at the time thought I was crazy…knitting dog hair, but it was a cool experience and my Flicka lives on, although never with a black wool coat! Have fun with your dog hair project! It’s a great story to tell❤️ Gayle in Stillwater Minnesota

HI Julie! It was fun to see your bags. Lots of good ones. I appreciate your comments on what you like and don't like etc. I decided this year to knit more from stash and not purchase yarn except for a few exceptions. It's not because I want to shame or punish myself for having too much yarn. The truth is I have so much amazing yarn and so many beautiful projects in my queue, they deserve attention! I often get overwhelmed by my stash and trying to decide what to knit. Setting limits on my purchases has helped me feel less stressed, if that makes any sense. I'm lucky and have a hubby that totally supports my knitting and my yarn buying. Always encouraging me to purchase when I show him something I like. I remember once a friend asked me the cost of the yarn for a sweater I was making. It wasn't crazy, but I think I spent around $100. She doesn't have much and I was embarrassed to tell her. After I did, she asked me how long it would take me to make the sweater. I told her about a month. She said to me "you get a month of entertainment and a beautiful sweater for only $100, I think that's quite a bargain". She also said something about her hubby's round of golf costing more. That's perspective.

This episode in particular was so lovely to watch, the reason being as I got all warm and fuzzy when I saw your Hebden Bridge mug. I'm a Yorkshire lass (born in Calderdale) even though my parents emigrated to South Africa when I was 9 and now many years later I now live in Poland. But..... My heart and soul will always be in Yorkshire and thankfully I now live much closer and can visit. Thank you for such interesting vlogs ❤

Hi Julie, I caught this episode and it reminded me that I saw an earlier one of yours and wanted to comment. We also live in Colorado, just south of Denver. Your Wooly Works Pendleton bag is lovely! I'd like to try and make one with scrap wool fabric, of course it wouldn't be quite as nice. How great that you have family and contacts in the UK to expand your yarn from there. Your husband sounds like "a keeper". Thanks for the tour of the Lula Faye Fiber shop in Boulder. I've been seeing advertisement for it, and haven't been there yet. Good to know they are a resource for Knitting with Olive! Coincidentally I know your sister, but haven't kept up with her. She used to work with my husband when we lived in the same town. We used to talk knitting etc. This was when my children were younger and I didn't have the time to fully devote to knitting. (Your sister actually helped us with some paperwork to adopt our youngest daughter!) Fast forward, and my husband and I are now retired. I'm involved with a dye garden at Chatfield and love learning/experiencing the wonder of plant/flower dyeing. I have been acquiring more yarn than I'll ever have the time to use. The inspiration planning my yarn to use with various patterns helps me dwell on positive things and sleep at night. I guess that's worth something. If I can resonate more that we have in common... we have 3 cats! Makes it hard to travel though, now that we have the time. Say hi to your sister for me. Best, Julie (and Terry)

Just getting to watch this one. Loved the yarn shop visit! The dog Jaír you gathered reminded me of an art teacher I had years ago who saved all of her dog’s hair for a local spinner who made it I to yarn and knit with it. She sold her items in the folk art museum at our college. She didn’t mix anything in with it.

I love your knitting bags, Julie! Especially the pretty and fun-shaped one that you made yourself. I like your Robin project bag, too! I also love birds! The knitting bag I use most is medium-sized and I got it in Lillehammer, Norway many years ago. I believe it is actually a fabric grocery bag - Norway is big on environmental protection and recycling. The blue fabric is strong but soft and has the word Miljovennlig! (Eco-friendly) on it. One day it just became the bag I carry my smaller knitting projects in. I love it! :) Thanks for another wonderful episode! Your ideas and projects are fun and so are you! :)

Yes, I travelled to Norway in September 2008 on a vacation tour. It was lovely! The bag is not your typical fabric grocery bag - it doesn't really look like one. Mine is made of sturdy denim-like fabric and it's soft. I will find an amazing and fun knitting bag like one of yours some day soon. I have an actual knitting project bag too that I like, but the Norwegian bag is the one I reach for most often when I dash out the door with a project to work on ;). I look forward to your January's podcast! :D@@TheKnittyKats

I’ve been collecting my dog’s fur for a few months now because I thought it would be a great gift for my husband, if I could get a local fiber spinner to combine it with some merino to knit him a scarf or socks. I was worried they would think I was crazy, but now I feel better about the idea. He’s a Pekingese and has a fluffy undercoat that very soft, so I hope I can make it happen!

Not finished your video yet but I love a couple of things…your bright pink and rolled collar sweater (I’m thinking I’ll make something close to it!). I let my hair go grey during Covid and my clothing colours have had to switch from cream and earth tones to white, grey, black, denim blues, the blue/green you are searching for, bright pink, turquoise…and most jewel tones. Gives our fading skin and hair a lift! Next…it is great that you are recycling dog fur (I’m thinking poodle types would be best). I have heard of this being done before. 👍👍👍

After the podcast, I found two of my dads pendleton sweaters. He was so proud to buy them. I remember. Thank you for setting me straight on that. Happy knitting... and sewing.

Hi Julie. What a lovely find on you tube. Glad to have found you. Would you consider pretending your beautiful green sweater is just another garment and stitch the side seams in so that it will fit you better? I am a sewist and we often get people bringing in bought knitted items that need altering. So we just stitch them up. Has always worked so far. As long as you can get the shape you want. You will just need to have a serger/overlocker to keep the edges from fraying. Just a thought 💭🧡

I Enjoyed this podcast, as I am also crazy about bags and have for too many. I don’t have small bags as I am not a sock knitter. My smallest bag is probably the fringe supply bag. As I am a sweater knitter, most of your large bags would be considered medium to my taste as I do need larger bags for sweaters. Two of favourite brands are Atenti and 65 South. I love the elegant fabrics and finishes of the Atenti bags but they are not cheap. My favourite style is a tote bag with a wide bottom, handles, a magnetic closure and outside pockets.

Just found your podcast and I love it! There are soo many knitting rabbit holes aren't there?! I enjoyed all the segments! It's so much fun to live vicariously through others when they go to different yarn shops! Thanks for that! All the best in your up coming retail season! Been there done that too! Looking forward to your next podcast!❤

I totally agree with you on those inside middle pockets in project bags. I don't like them at all. They take up valuable space! Love this episode!

I wasn’t able to “grab” a cat even though we have two! However, Molly was very interested in your podcast! It’s a shame I can’t post a photo of her avidly watching you! She loves knitting (mainly sitting on it or padding it)

I know.. they are had to catch. They are mostly indoor but I do take them out when I am out. But they are still cautious outside and do not like to be held outside. I don't know what there lives were like before us, but I have a good idea it wasn't good. So I have to let them be. I will try to see what I can do next time. Thank you for being interested in them.

Another great episode. Loved seeing all your bags and hearing how you use them, as well as the pros and cons. I also really enjoy the Cornish knitters podcast. She has excellent segments and I would love to visit her store as well as Falmouth. I’m planning on joining in with the KAL she is hosting in December.

What a fun episode! I enjoy making bags as well. Grainline Studio has the pattern for the Field Bag. I have made it several times and it is always a bit bigger than the one I purchased when they were available commercially so perhaps you would like that size (but then again, perhaps I’m not measuring perfectly). My favorite bag is the Town Bag (pattern also available at Grainline). I make both of those bags with leather handles and canvas or waxed canvas, but your Pendleton fabric (made in Pendleton OR) on a bag was amazing and I’ll have to look for some old wool blankets to use for something like that. So many of us enjoying making of so many varieties. Thank you for sharing your makes and purchases.

This was a great episode! Your sweater is beautiful, the color looks great on you! I love your bags. It is obvious that each one holds a special place in your heart! My 3 favorite bags were custom made by a maker in the US, Jo4Totes. Each one is beautiful, and they bring me great joy when I use them. I also use some Vera Bradley tote bags for my crochet projects, they work well. I hope your mother is doing well! Take care!!

I loved hearing about finding the dog hair!! FYI, dog hair is VERY warm. I highly recommend what you mentioned, that you blend it with wool. It is also pretty heavy by itself, when spun. I had a friend, years ago, who raised Samoyeds. She collected the hair & had someone spin it. She knit it up into something (can't remember, maybe a sweater) but it was just too hot to wear. I think there are books you can reference on knitting with dog hair. Love your stories!!

I love your Audrey sweater. I inherited a Pendleton wool blanket from my folks, unfortunately it was in the RV when I sold it and I didn't realize it for several months. Oh well, I hope the new owner appreciates it. Your new sweater bag is beautiful. Thanks for another great episode!

I copied Kristy Glass’s Christmas Soldotna and made long sleeves. I had to manage yarn so I made the sleeves in an asymmetrical color work. I feel the same about the Italian bindoff. It’s really easier for me that other bindoff. Years ago, before I got back into knitting, I got into making all kinds of bags. I loved all the Amy Butler patterns and fabrics. Then I became a Thirty-One consultant for a few years. So, now, I have a life time supply of bags/totes, all sizes and shapes. ❤ If you cut out that middle zipper part, can you sew up the sides and have a new small bag?
