A detailed review of the Knitter's Pride Karbonz knitting needles.
The Karbonz needles are some of the most durable and versatile knitting needles. Made from carbon with metal tips they seem to combine the best of both worlds in one perfect needle. In this video, I will put the bold claims on the website to the test. Here's the transcript:
In the Karbonz range, there are DPNS, interchangeable needles, and fixed circulars. There are also single-pointed needles. But I never knit with such needle, so that’s why I didn’t include them in this video
All these needles share the same general construction. It’s a carbon body with metal tips for all the different needles. I’ll take a look at these shared characteristics first and then I’ll show you the various sets and differences.
Knitter’s Pride is, as far as I know, the only company that produces carbon knitting needles. Carbon is extremely durable, yet incredibly light and very warm to touch. Unlike metal, it’s very hard to bend it and even if you can it will snap back into its original configuration. It does not splinter like wood does either but has similar friction that prevents your stitches from slipping off too easily.
I particularly want to note the sheer lightness. These are metal dpns in size 3mm and they weigh 20 grams. And these are carbon needles. Same size, same length. And they are 12 grams. That’s 50 percent less.
So, are the Karbonz perfect in every way?
Well if you take a closer look, then you will see that only the body of the needles is made from carbon. The tips are metal. Nickel coated brass to be quite precise.
The tips are sharp enough for almost all projects but not the sharpest. Hiya Hiya and ChiaoGoo are sharper. This is addi here. They all got a much longer taper as well. So, if long sharp tips is what you are looking for the Karbonz will disappoint you.
Also, you have a little kink here at the transition between the body and the tip. I want to be honest here. When you glide over it with your fingers, its definitely noticeable. But the more important question is perhaps if the yarn gets caught and that’s a definite no. In all my years knitting with them that has never happened.
What does happen, however, is that the coating may eventually rub off after quite some heavy use. Personally, I don’t see it as a real negative. The thing is, a lot of needles aren’t coated and you definitely feel the difference. Actually, it’s the main issue I have with needles from Hiya Hiya or ChiaoGoo. The surface drives me insane.
These are coated but it’s a very thin layer of nickel that makes these needles so slick and it’s just normal and expectable that it rubs off at one point just like gilding does. It’s something I know and I can live with. When the needles are past their prime I exchange them - until then, I am working with the better tool for me.
Another thing that will rub off is the needle size. It’s printed on carbon but it will fade after one or two uses. It’s definitely something that could be improved but I personally care more about the knitting quality of a needle than visuals.
And there, all these needles excel. Thanks to the hybrid character, meaning metal tips and carbon body, you can knit almost as fast as with the Nova Platina or addi needles and yet you have the body that keeps your stitches from slipping off. Really nice to be honest.
So, how durable are the needles if carbon is all that amazing?
Well…this is a difficult question. The carbon itself is almost indestructible. I own them in every size and I knit a lot with them and they never broke in half or so. It’s why I love them so much. When you are knitting with small size needles and you are an experienced knitter, then you will always turn to metal needles. Yet these 2.00 mm needles bend so damn easily. It’s the very reason I love the Karbonz so much. A typical metal DPN will last me 2 maybe 3 socks and that was just not efficient for me.
The thing, however, is, that there’s a lot of metal on these Karbonz knitting needles. The tips are basically glued to the body and that can break away given enough force. And, if we are talking about the circulars, then the cable might snap out of its hull here at the back as well. So, in all honesty, you get quite some durability but it’s not like a one-in-a-lifetime purchase either.

Debate and I’ve been using carbons for well over 20 years or maybe 10 I don’t know. my most commonly used sizes are wearing down. It’s worth it to replace them. The warm carbon fine the tip it all works to me. I have enough knitting needles in wood and to start my own knitting shop, which I have no intention of doing. Thank you so much for doing these for us pointing out all of the questions that many of us would be asking if we could get a hold of a company representative Thank you for your kindness and you are worth $1.98 or whatever I can afford each time I click into you ❤❤❤❤

Thank you so much for posting this video. I usually knit my socks using 9” circular needles but have fallen in love with knitting gloves. Just about all of the videos call for dpn’s so I wasn’t sure what to look for or get. My go to set of interchangeable needles is chiaogoo and I love them. I have bamboo needles but in the larger sizes. But you have managed to convince me to pick the set of Knitter’s pride karbonz for my gloves. The it will just be a matter of getting used to them and maybe I’ll switch to using them instead of my 9” circular needles. You’re also very pleasant to listen to and I appreciate your honesty. You’ve helped me to understand the differences in the different sets of needles. Thanks again.

I love KnitPro products, they are my go-to brand for yarn-ware. And these Karbonz needles are sooooo on my shopping list. I tried Prym's carbon knitting needles recently (loved them) and now I have very high expectations from Knitpro's carbon series. Thank you for this review, it sorted out some residual insecurities I may have had left.

Very interesting video. I’m glad I watched it. I remember when the Karbonz first came out. I read somewhere that the carbon material can be toxic. I don’t remember where I read it but after doing some recent research I cannot find anything to substantiate that claim. As for dpns I have mostly metal knitters pride, some Knitters Pride Dreamz and some bamboo. Since I don’t use them that often I’m not very good with them so the bamboo holds the stitches better. I use them mostly for the top of hats. I taught myself magic loop for socks last summer and using 9 inch circulars which can be tough on the hands, lol. I am next going to try dpns for socks! We shall see how that goes, lol. Lately, I’ve been more into learning new techniques rather than a new project. I go back and forth. Thanks for another great review!😊

Hi Norman, thank you for this review. As I have a big birthday coming up I have treated myself to several items you have talked about in your various videos. The purchase of the knitpro symfonie interchangeable needles has been a real big change for the better..no more long needles getting in the way. The karbonz dpn are also fantastic, so light and as a newbie to knitting in the round much easier to work with than metal needles as the stitches don't slide off. I also bought a knitting block set as I had never done this before 🤦‍♀️ thank you for all your advice x

My aunt is a master knitter and I noticed she used these. I couldn't afford a set upfront so I went to my local craft store and bought a Knitters Pride Pro Acrylic set that is very similar to the Carbonz set as far as cords and cable stops etc. That way I have a starter set, and I've slowly been buying the Carbonz as I go. I also have some that are the 40" fixed circular needles in a small size for doing socks with the magic loop method. I LOVE THEM!! I stick with the knitters pride because it's all completely interchangeable with anything in the brand. They stand up to the abuse that sometimes comes with small children too! I do agree that in the larger size, the metal interchangeable Knitters Pride are probably just as well and a little cheaper if you buy them the way I have been... sorry for saying so much I just really love these needles!

You have some of the best knitting videos on youtube in my opinion, and this review was also really good. I wish I had seen this review years ago, before I bought my first Karbonz DPN-s. I knitted lace with them and you actually mention both problems I noticed: their tips are not sharp enouth and the transition between body and the tip can cause trouble in some cases. It can become a bit annoying when you use thin yarn (let's say 100 g = 1500 m and up), this yarn is also soft and limp (merino), and additionally you are a tight knitter. Otherwise these needles are great.

You can use clear nail polish to prevent the size from rubbing off. I don’t have these but I did that with some wood hooks I have. Also when the sizes range from 2-10 rather than 0-15 it makes sense to have one set of cables. I have Chiaogoos (2-15 set) and the two cable sizes don’t bother me at all, if I was using the small cables on the 15 needles it would probably bug me. What are the 1mm dpns used for?

  • @NimbleNeedles

ah..that's nice tip, though I don't own nail polish. ha. still would be worried to make the needle thicker in that place (which is no issue with hooks). As for the CC ccables. Yes, it makes sense. Still, a lot of knitters buy a set so they are "set", so I feel it's important to mention that you might have to buy a couple of accessories. to get the most out of it. 1mm dpns? Anything, i knit socks, doilies, toys with them.

I prefer the fixed circular Karbonz over the interchangeables. I find that my yarn will hang a bit at the join of the interchangeables, and it does not do that on the fixed circulars. Especially for the smaller sizes. Also- the join sticks out a bit more on the interchangeables... just enough to be noticeable.

the durability would most likely come with them not breaking at the tip, like laminated birch needles can do, nor will the finish coming off be near as annoying as the plastic finish over the laminated birch needles, when it starts to degrade, and the birch cost even more by the same manufacturer. I'm going to give these a try.

Thank you so much for this! I was almost ready to buy because I love the carbon feel, and I was so excited to find this Knitter's Pride brand but the minute you said it's the same as Knit Pro, I made up my mind. I have Knit Pro interchangeables (Symfonie) and although the website said at the time of my purchase that they have a no questions asked 100% replacement policy, my experience is that is simply NOT TRUE. In my set, which came in the crappiest possible plastic case, the metal parts and cord keep falling off, sometimes in all by themselves in the bag. I think they were glued with spit. This is most distressing, of course, in mid project. Knit Pro 'service' says, "too bad, so sad". Maybe service is better in the US? I don't know. Here in the EU, Knit Pro has no service at all, in my experience. I am looking for a new set but thanks to your review I will stay far away from Knitter's Pride. Also, any contact with nickel is certainly something to avoid for all living things, imho. Anyway, I loved the review, you helped me avoid a mistake and I have liked and subscribed! I want them to last forever. I don't want the coating to rub off 😫. So if u want them to last forever would u just go with non coated ones?

The point is, tools are not meant to last forever. Wood will break and splinter, and even stainless steel can end up crooked or the joins break because there's plastic and glue involved. But yeah, if, for whatever reason you are worried about the coating to rub off, these needles will not be the perfect match. At the end of the day, if you want your transportation device to last forever and easy to repair, get a bike. But most people will still opt for the car because it'S faster and more comfortable even tho they know it's only gonna last a decade maybe two :)

I wish they would put something over the nickel for people with nickel allergies. That would be perfect!

I am waffling between these and ones that are fully metal. I have extremely tight tension so I’m afraid these will grip on my yarn too much.

I wanted to love these but, my 5 needle dpns snag at the join between the taper and needle-body every time. Oof it is tiresome on tiny sock yarn, snagging every single stitch.

really? hm..interesting. I use these needles on a daily basis and this never happens. I mean, you notice the join a little bit...but nothing remotely like "snagging" - and I am a tight knitter.

@@NimbleNeedles I wonder if I got a bad batch then? That hadn't occured to me. And I noticed you were a tight knitter. That's why I was so surprised you would enjoy a non-smooth kntting tool haha. I will see if an exchange is possible.

@@druidsongevergreens that could be a possibility. Or they changed their production standards for the U.S. I don't know. I mean, I am not getting any money for Knitters Pride, so I wouldn't recommend these needles if I didn't think they were the best for my kind of knitting.
