Knight's Armament - Light Assault Machine Gun

The Assault Machine Gun from Knight’s Armament Company delivers the needed sustained volume of fire to an assault element at a low enough weight to keep pace with an assault.
With a low cyclic rate of 575-625 rounds per minute, and constant-recoil/spring run-out operation, it is more controllable than other similar machine guns that weigh nearly twice as much.
In this video we discuss the gun, its intended role, field strip it and discuss the history that lead up to the creation of this new Light Assault Machine gun.

Full metal jacket related comment: Leonard is Animal Mother. The two characters played by two different actors actually represent the personal duality within private gomer pile. Leonard starts out soft, innocent, caring, gentle, empathetic, and good natured. But the marine corps wants killers. Leonard is thus born again hard as Animal Mother. The suicide scene is only a dream sequence portraying this ego death. Joker is not the main character even though the story is told from his perspective, the reason for this is that he is the only one left alive after cowboy is wasted in Vietnam who was actually there and saw both sides of the story, from training to combat. Just thought I’d share my interpretation of the film.

Knights armament has experience with the aquisitions process; I would hope someone sees the value of replacing the M249 with something like this. Totally agree with you guys, the Assault MG seems like it fullfills the original intended role of the 249 better than that weapons does. Plus, in my limited experience I really didn't like the 249, and neither do a few senior sergeants I have met. Thanks for the review, this is one of the only places online where I can get the newest ideas on firearms that isn't "Monstrously Powerful New Weapons will do X" type of hype.

These guys will heat up much faster than a SAW, so they probably won't get replaced for the heavy applications- where you mount a SAW in a gun truck, or other cupola. You could (should) argue that the 240 is still the primary gun for that job, which it is, but ime moar guns in the column is moar better. The heavier barrel and straight up having more meat definitely helps the SAW in vehicle mount roles where weight isn't a big problem.

I think even the Ultimax model that takes Stanag mags seems like a better squad automatic weapon on the movbe than the M;249. The ultimax is much lighter, has nearly no felt recoil, a walking man can change magazines, and the Ultimax can actually feed from magazines, which the M249 really can't do reliably.

Jannis Schmidt agreed. I think that many of the comments saying that this should replace the 249 are a little off base. I see this more as a specialized mg where guns like mk48 or the hk21 would have traditionally been used. I don’t think that knights intended theLAMG to be capable of the same sustained rate of fire as something like the 249 or 240.

I wonder how well this would do to replace the M249 in service and the various M60E(x)'s floating around. The simple takedown and light weight seem to be major improvements compared to the 249 and still better than the lightened M60's, while still offering an belt-fed design unlike the philosophy behind the IAR (which I'm not entirely certain could completely replace this type of weapon). Durability would be a big thing to have to bring to the table and test, but this seems like a legitimate advancement to the LMG's of today.

You could clearly see the G3 making a really, really substantial jump upon the bolt hitting the back of the reciever, and closing back up. If it wouldn't be so deafening you could probably use it as a very uncomfortable rocking horse.

They set up the gun in a space where they have clear fields of fire, and the AG directs the gunner to targets, dictates barrel change frequency, and links belts together to allow for sustained fire.

The barrel removal for a LMG is more specifically for conducting maintenance of the gas system than for swapping barrels for a sustained rate employment, as if you were using it on a support by fire line. 5.56 just doesn't have enough oomph to really do the job on SBF work, hence medium MG's like the 240 etc.

7.27 The'll need to modify this. It is not feasible to grab hot barrel for changing. Very clean design on the inside. On the IAR concept: I thought the idea was to replace one SAW with two IARs and have sustained fire that way.

During a P&S Modcast, it was stated that spare barrels weren't often carried in as there wasn't enough ammo to shoot. An M249 has a cyclic rate of fire of 850 rpm at the high end (FM3-22.68) with a reccomended barrel change every minute. With 850 rounds fired in a minute, it can be assumed that there won't be much ammo left to shoot after a barrel's replaced.

Ian and Karl (mostly Ian) have already talked about this in their Q&A's. The expense for re-equipping the entire U.S. military with new rounds would be ENORMOUS, for a benefit ratio not nearly high enough to justify the expense of uprooting and replacing the entirety of the 5.56 industrial complex. Plenty of modern intermediate-plus rounds offer advantages over the old standby 5.56 - none of them offer ENOUGH of an advantage to be worth discarding the entire existing arsenal of 5.56 NATO standard equipment and spending banananillions of dollars on a suit of entirely new guns. That transitionary period would be extraordinarily dangerous and a blood-in-the-water weakness for a lot of nations. It'd also be a giant logistical clusterfuck of actually mythical proportions. Just not worth the hassle in any way, really.

I doubt they would favor 10mm over 9mm. You aren't really gaining all that much other than extra energy and recoil, not enough to justify replacing all of the older firearms. I think something similar to 5.7 would be much more likely, since it can zip through stuff that 10mm can't. Or something like the 7.5 FK would probably be ideal, or maybe 357 sig, 9x25 Dillon, etc. As for rifles, this "assault machine gun" for sure seems to have some promise. Another option would be one of the small framed ar10's in something like 6.5 creedmoor (or 6mm). No idea how a 9 lb rifle would be in full auto though. That would likely be more of a spr / dmr. Cartridges like the 6.5 grendel have a lot of potential too imo. I doubt we will see anything other than 5.56 or 7.62x51 for a while though.

Wow. I really hope the military adopts this--it seems like exactly the kind of thing the US Army and Marines need--lightweight, controllable, accurate, sustained fire, with quick change barrels and lots of refinement. The SAW is great and all, but it always seemed to be a very heavy and unwieldy beast that was difficult to conduct fire and maneuver with throughout an extended firefight. The IAR REALLY lacks the sustained fire to fulfill the same kind of role that the SAW does (which always puzzled me).

The barrel changing seems to be easy, but if you have to change the barrel after sustained fire it will be hot. and it doesn't look like any part of the barrel assembly is insulated to keep your hand from getting burned, so you'd still need a mitten or something to pull it out Are there any longer barrels for like fixed positions like on vehicles where the barrel has a carry handle?

  • @ostiariusalpha

    @ostiariusalpha

KAC does have barrels with handles for the LAMG. When used in an assault, the assumption is that you aren't going to be changing the barrel until after you've finished, which is the typical practice of machine gunners in real combat. Switching barrels is more often done in defensive actions.

Well hope these weapons make some traction in the military and not just specialty/Elite units. As prior military (as 10 years in a combat mos's) i have carried the 249 and 240. Was never a fan of the 249, to heavy for a 556 round and a m4/m16 could do 99% of what the 249 could do when on burst. Liked the 240 for the power but to heavy/large and front heavy. These could definitely make a big improvement.

They did that with the M249 and it's really unreliable. Besides, big magazines are complex and prone to failure, and small magazines won't do as you can't do a lot of sustained fire with those.

I'm getting a bit of a Stoner 63 vibe from this thing, though clearly optimized for the "Light Support Weapon" role, as the British might put it. I'd have to say that LSW seems to be a good term for this thing that might be a bit less inflammatory (not that I really care, a name's a name in my book). May it meet with better acceptance that it's predecessor.
