Knife Making With Regular Tools | Every Step Shown

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

How to make a knife with regular tools. I show every step in the knife making process. The steel Im using is 1080 1/8" thick. The knife scales are natural canvas micarta. The pins and lanyard tube are carbon fiber. The liners are g10.
The main tools I use are an angle grinder, a 4x36 belt sander, a drill press, a handheld drill, clamps, and a diy forge. The forge can be made for about $20, and I have a video on how to make it.
You could probably buy all of these tools for the same price as a new custom made knife.
This is a great beginner knife making project! Any questions about the knife making process, or about life in general please feel free to ask! Thanks for watching!

You've made some pretty awesome videos on knife sharpening before which have helped me a lot and I would really appreciate it if you made one more on this subject

Love the video Alex! Makes me want to go start making a knife of my own! Can I make one suggestion though? In the interest of those wanting to learn from you, in future videos like these (sped-up, no dialogue) could you maybe show on screen what grit of sandpaper is being used while it appears on screen? This might help people get a better handle on where to start and where you finish with the grits used. Thanks again for all the awesome videos, I just bought some of the stuff to make a strop (bought the leather thru your affiliate link too fwiw) so Im eager to make and try one of those out soon!

I like the idea of using a burr on the Dremel to undercut the cavities in the scales to create a mechanical bond to the hardened epoxy, effectively making them into a single piece.

  • @OUTDOORS55

It’s definitely overkill to do this, not many knife makers do, but it makes me feel better using pins rather than screw together fasteners (corby, loveless bolts etc.). It’s an extra step I might as well do while I have the scales off the blade. 🙂

Your attention to detail is friggin scary on point. How many hours do you estimate you put into that masterpiece? After seeing your videos, my son Justin told me if you would create it, he would custom order one for my next birthday. Is that a possibility? If not, I will continue to drool. Keep up the great work friend Padawan.

See if you can beat your record and build the next one in under 19:48 and I’ll really be impressed!!! 😂😂😂 joking aside you are the knife man!!! I don’t know how you have the patience for all that hand sanding. I have to go straight to power tools and it still takes me weeks to put out a knife that still doesn’t come close to looking like yours. 👍👍👍 and a big pat on the back. Rock on. Btw, where to buy?

Hi Alex, great video! One question though: what are you spraying onto the scales when you are handsanding them? Something to prevent getting metaldust into the micarta?

Very nice build, what was the final grit you used on the micarta?

Hi! Can u tell me why during steel quenching flames sometimes are, and sometimes not. I know when quench full detal its impossible to make a flame, but in slowly quenching its differently. Does it affect to hardness? Thank you!

Only recently found your channel; great stuff, man. I've been wondering: Is there a special reason you hardly ever seem to use 'natural' material for your handles, like wood, bone, horn, ivory etc ? I am asking in case I am missing something in my own work. Cheers!

I just like stable materials. Ive used stabilized wood in the past but dont use a lot of it as sourcing good material can be tough. 🙂

Hello I'm just getting into knife sharpening with stones and I was wondering for a beginner what would you recommend for starting stones. Should I buy the Ceramic stones you recently reviewed or the nortons. Can you also explain the grits as well thank you your videos are very informing and make me want to learn how to do this on my own

I would go with the ceramic stones. They are MUCH easier to use than the Norton's. It depends on your budget for grits. If I could only buy two stones it would be an extra coarse DMT diamond stone and a spyderco medium ceramic. If you had budge for three stones id get those two plus the fine ceramic, and so on. The medium stone is great for maintaining and light reprofiling, but really needs to be paired with something coarser for re profiling work. Even a cheap $12 coarse stone or sand paper would do if you didn't have the budget for a dmt stone. Hope this helps!

When you are normalizing do you get it to Austenite first and then normalize or is a combination of 2 ? And how long do you let your knife air cool before the second normalize and how long does it take you to get to Austenite stage ? Great video by the way !

I take it to austenite (or close as possible by forge) then allow to cool to the touch in still air. Its repeated 3 times. It may not be the best method for grain refinement but its the best I can manage with my primitive forge. Thanks for watching my friend!
