Knife Making Shop Tour at Rangermade Knives - 2019

This is a not-so-short tour of my shop here at Rangermade Knives. I didn't expect this video would become quite so long but, the content and comments on knife making and tools may be quite beneficial for aspiring knifemakers and makers in other skill areas.
If you have any questions about anything I cover in the video, feel free to ask in the comments section below.

Love the shop tour! I have the same Boyer Schultz surface grinder. I’m trying to do the belt conversion on it. Any chance you can do a in depth on how you did yours? Thanks for the videos brother.

Joe thanks for the compliments. Hoping I get more comfortable in front of the camera. I have decided to sit out from Blade this year. I feel a lot of loyalty to those who have orders on my books and I want to focus on them. Have a great time at Blade!

Loved the tour of your shop... One can only dream, starting with the building it's all housed in!! I started engraving myself a while back, definitely one of the slowest learning curves I have ever attempted to tackle... Would love to come to one of your gatherings, bit of a road trip though... Thx for the sharing of your knowledge, looking forward to more of your videos...

Thanks Jay. I completely agree on the engraving. It's the drawing that really challenges me. Just have to chip away at it slowly, like any new skill.

@@rangermadeknives I've been takin classes when I can with Wes Griffin... Totally agree about the drawing... I've hit a block and letting it affect my desire to cut... I gotta get back to cuttin' more, and let the drawin' catch up... Really thinkin about makin' a day trip one of these months to go to one of your get togethers... I'm down by Ft Hood... retired army also!!

JB, the Knives & Coffee get togethers are always good. They are the second Sunday of every month. Definitely a haul from the Killeen area though.

that drill index! nice! id love to see what your referring to about stacking the moen with gauge blocks in a quick vid why white vinegar with ferric? love to see your phosphor bronze shim punch set if ya get a chance favorite quote "heres where i assemble and disassemble my knives about 40-50 times before they go out" heh

Hah! People have no idea how many times a handmade folder gets assembled before it gets to them. The white vinegar with FC is for getting darker blacks in stainless Damascus. I started out doing a one second dip on Damasteel (after muriatic) on the advice of Todd Begg. It really improved the contrast. I just etched a Mike Norris stainless ladder blade today that went in a 50/50 mix of water and ferric for 15 minutes and then into the vinegar mix for about 10. It was cold in my shop so the etching was a little slow today. The blade came out great! I'll have the knife up on my Instagram in a couple days. Maybe try to show it in my next video as well. I'll add the shim punching and lapping to my list of topics. I've already got a plan to demonstrate my use of the Moen platen.
