Knife Edge Types - A Knife Blade Overview

There is lot more to a knife than you might think at a glance. Frankly, once you dive in, it can be overwhelming and confusing discerning the difference between blades shapes, anatomy, and edge angle.
Fortunately, we have Steve! Steve joins us in the Workshop to walk us through it all as our resident all things knives expert. If you are just starting to carry a knife or are a fellow knife nerd, this episode should have something for everyone.

Could y'all do a video on the different steels? There's so many variants nowadays, that it's difficult to keep up. And most information comes from forums, which you never know what to trust. Is 1095 still relevant? Why are powdered steels considered really good? "Super steels"?

Love your videos and JUST ordered the Ken Onion Edition Knife & Tool Sharpener - Elite Sharpening System ! Thanks guys - been using a cheap 1" belt sander and wooden 20 degree wooden blocks I cut. I think I can get sharp and working before I would get the old system set up ! I wish you had a leather belt included so I will keep my old belt setup for honing. But overall seems like a great setup !

Hi Guys, Videos on different steels would be great. I find the good steel videos really interesting and helpful. Also, videos on different sharpening mediums would be helpful. Diamond vs cbn vs natural stones... Thank you

😊I have a folding knife I got as a premium from the NRA that is a lot like a spear point with a large swedge. In the process of learning how to use the WorkSharp KNIFE & TOOL SHARPENER MK2 I made a rookie mistake and rounded off the point. Now the swedge is way out of allignment. Would you please address what corrective measures are needed to fix this problem?

I enjoy your videos, very informative. I’ve got the WS Ken Onion knife & tool sharpener - had it about a year now and recently got the blade grinding attachment. My question is when sharpening a new knife, how can I determine the original factory bevel angle so I can keep edge as close to original grind?

The sharpie trick is a great way to check. Color along the bevel of the knife and then choose an angle to sharpen to. Using a fine abrasive, make a few passes and check to see if the maker is removed at the edge of the knife or up at the shoulder. Adjust accordingly.

Can you do a video on barbers sheers?

Hair sheers or barber shears are sharpened typically on a custom-made hairdressing sharpening machine. These are specially designed and can cost many thousands. The right person with enough time could probably sharpen the shears on a stone. All that to say, we don't recommend tackling these on your own. We might have to try it some time though, could make a good episode of the Workshop!
