Knife Defense Drills Don't Work In Reality.

Learn More About The Filipino Martial Art Pintados: budobrothers.tv/pages/pintados
The reality is it is very hard to defend against a knife attack without taking serious damage. But is there a point to doing knife drills? GM Oliver shows that there are serious holes in most Filipino Martial Arts knife defense drills. He shows the techniques and attributes he likes to train and gives you a simple skill you can train.
For more videos like this, we have put together an online course with GM Oliver Pintados learn more about it here: budobrothers.tv/pages/pintados

My grandfather fought in Korea as a Marine. Afterwards he taught combatives for the corps for many years. My younger brother and I were watching a Steven Segal movie at my grandparents house when we were in our mid teens, and I heard my grandpa scoff at one of the knife fighting scenes. We asked him to teach us a few knife fighting techniques. Using training knives and lipstick we quickly learned that there's one foundational truth in knife fighting: you WILL get cut. The best way to survive a knife is to avoid it altogether.

I was at knife defense seminars plenty times, but only once I run into really great teacher with honest and practical info about it. There is really no unarmed knife defense that is guarantee you wont get cut, stabbed or killed. That instructor was really strong, fast and he knew what he was doing and yet in realistic sparring we did even people that had no idea how to use knife would manage to cut him majority of times. I'm not saying that knowing tis technique is bad thing, its great actually and you should know them very well, but this should be used as last resort. Only if your or someone else life is in danger you should ever try this. If there is possibility to run do it, if not try to defuse situation. If its robbery just comply, money is not worth your life or serious injury. If that is not option try to find some weapon, stick vs knife is better than bare hands. And if there is no other option and you see you will be attacked than attempt knife defense techniques, be ready to get slashed or stabbed and be ruthless.

Offensive only FMA is the reason why FMA almost died in the Philippines years ago. A lot of the older generation still think it's thuggery because the outcome was always severe injury or death. FMA has evolved to become a good defensive solution but it requires a tremendous level of mastery of the technique so as not to hurt the other person. Because we live beyond feudal times and jurisprudence has taken hold, you can't do all the shit the FMA offers you. You have to think of other ways to control someone and not to resort to straight killing.

It really boils down to skill, speed, timing and execution on both ends of it. I've trained extensively with a variety of knives and combat weaponry and so I know I'm difficult to defend against or disarm. I also know I can disarm and defend sloppily executed or even okay attacks. But someone skilled and experienced is going to cut you, probably badly. Always be prepared to get cut. It's where and how that counts. If you take one on a forearm or non critical area you might execute a disarm or offense subsequently.

no if a person comes at you with full rage then you're going to get stabbed the fuck out til you die, you are not going to be able to defend against it no matter what. Put your arm up? He'll stab you in your stomach, in your face, in your neck, I've seen videos of stabbings and the person being stabbed literally just give up after the first five to ten stabs and then just lay there getting stabbed until they are dead, that's reality.

It is very dangerous to fight a knife-wielding man with our bare hands. No matter what it is. The best way is either run or use whatever objects around us to defend and attack him. Objects like chairs, bottles, bowls, beer glasses, tables, hot soup, oil (throw on the floor in his path), belt etc are very useful to save ourselves. The 4 legs of a chair are very useful to disarm him.

I saw the tag line and had to respond. Absolutely correct!!! Drills can help build proper movement, muscle memory, reaction time etc etc. But in real life situation it all depends on the situation itself, who is involved and so. Best reaction is automatic and natural and the point he's demonstrating in this video are very good. Knife fighting is like a cat fighting! I also see some other good posts on here responding from others who have experience. And then some from others who only know this from inside a dojo. To those in the dojo careful what you teach and what you think is effective.

even all other weapon arts train "out of measure" for the simple reason, that in training, you don't want to actually hurt your partner. As long as you are practicing the right trajectory, it should be enough, you just need to follow through all the way, and step in when live. You allowing your partner to interrupt your attack is also their training on how to respond, and back and forth, vice versa. You getting to hit your partner "realistically", full-force with no retaliation is no training at all, just crude barbarism.

@Abstraction Observing Knowledge - good question, but reality can be much more brutal than any youtube video - and I don't mean any disrespect here at all, just a simple observation based on some below experience: In a real street fight, in some other country, other city, crappy hood - suddendly most of that is irrelevant, as nobody will fight with just empty bare hands, one to one, or any crap like that. And often there will be more than one opponent, but let's assume it will be just one. A lof ot people will be actually using various "tools": kubatons, knives, brass knuckless/knuckle dusters on both hands, screwdrivers, or sharp pencils so they can go after your throat or simply stab you. And that is not even approaching guns, or teasers, or any kind of pepper sprays or a small can of tear gas (screw that noise, that is like a different level approach). Any average/large dude without much official club training but who is familiar with any street fights, he will use his sourounding too. He will try to grab you, get close to you in as much speed as he can, using his own body mass if necessary, and after that - make sure that your head will hit the pavement, some kind of concrete wall, close by pole or a trash bin, a part of a car that is close by, or some other "furniture" that is close by (depending on the situation, one example being a corner of a large oak table in a pub). In fact he will try to be as close to you as possible. Even just to stab you multiple times in just a few seconds. Pure stabbing, going after your liver or a middle body in general. Nothing to do with any cage/MMA fighting at all. Then he may go after you balls, throat, eyes (literally he will try to take them out), break your knees with anything he can including kicks, and as much as he can, break some of your fingers at any point during the fight. At the end, or even during the fight? He will bite. Sound funny? Yeah, for some people. But it is not in a reall life scenario. Bloody scary. At any point during the fight - he will simply try to bite off (or rip off) a large part of your nose, part of your cheek, your uper or lower lip. Ears too. And he will try to break any of your fingers at all time. Everything goes. Especially with somebody on heavy drugs. Even if you win that one, good luck dealing with any scars and hospital(s). As out there, there are people who will simply want to kill you during the fight. Just because. And they won't care about it. And there is always somebody more crazy, more skilled, more determinated, and better than you. Best "defence"? Run away, if you can, or if there is opportunity to do so, and be aware of your souroundings.

A good real scenario was from the "Ultimate Self Defense Championship". Everyone got cut, by people even less skilled. I think in the hierarchy of possible defenses you have: running away, finding longer objects to beat the reach of the knife, push kicks or head kicks hoping the guy falls or gets stunned enough for you to have time to run. And in the case where the guy is using 2 hands to grab the wrist he could headbutt on the chin at the same time hoping for a KO, before the knife guy has time to reposition the knife in his hand.

I did some knife fighting with dummy knives (with an instructor) - padded wooden knives. SO we actually try to stab or cut. If you try to spar at thayt close distance, you will almost certainly both get cut, fast. So I dont get , why they are both standing within the effective distance. Any practice that involves actual contact (i.e. sport training) the people stay at a distance - more like fencing. Stabs and cuts are done at arms length.

It sometimes depends on the attacker and the victim, in this demo, the attacker is not expecting any form of reaction or surprise response, in real life situation it becomes a matter of wit and lack of fear from the would be victim. Nice demo anyway.

We’ll done GM Oliver 🤣👍🏾 I love this way of defending the knife 🔪 you don’t have time in a real knife encounter to think 💭 about turning your wrist to back hand when that fast knife 🔪 is already on you. Parrying and slapping that assailant’s knife hand will buy you time to maneuver and get obstacles between you and him, and get out of there.

Nah...none of them are a waste. However, a lot of them are INCOMPLETE and are treated as joy-boy patty cake drills not unlike the effeminate man-hugging of BJJ. You gotta go beyond just the choreography and add submission and finish in order to make the thing complete. Some folks are trained to emphasize that the choreography is unto itself and is all you need to survive.

I have seen enough in south east Asia to respect FMA above most other arts - but gotta say the best defence against knife crime is a good education, a job / career & improve your life - don't be that guy hanging out in the wrong places (we all know those places). This will reduce your risk far more than drills & training

  • @blahblahblah-0-0

This drill is basic you have to learn. You will need to practice this everyday with a partner so that you feel your attackers distance and strength. Attacker advance techniques will include grabbing, grappling, counter, combo’s, a lot movement, space awareness, wall, corner and etc. You’ll have to be familiarize this basics and practice.

Knife defense can work if your wearing a knife defense shirt , so never say never . Most of the instructors I have come across usually wear knife defense shirts . They won’t protect you from a stab , but will slow the blade down a bit & they do protect you from cuts , your job is to protect yourself from stabs , also leather jackets can protect you also . I,d love to see this dude take on Doug Marcaida , just in a sparring session with knife markers so you could see who was hit & where .

Anytime i see the counters in my head its registering as cut, you bleed, kill strike Im not thinking with the mindset of sports fighting where the defender will gain points for how many parries and blocks he can perform. But rather how few he can do to stop the attacker, to stop the fight and he can walk home alive
