Since I live in a rural area I prefer semi serrated edges for farm work.

I agree it's more multipurpose. If I need to fillet a fish I will get my knife for that purpose.

I had a combo knife for years, I've only encountered situations where I wish the plain edge was longer. That said, the serrated edge does stay sharp much much longer, but it might be because I rarely used it. I got the combo for "what if" situations, but I can confidently say that the "what if" situation never occurred for the past 8 years, and I never had to cut ropes or belts.

I've been carrying a pocket knife for nearly 40 years and not one single time while using my knife have I thought to myself, "damn I wish this thing was serrated." I like a straight edge that can be sharpened easier and if it's sharp it will cut through most anything a pocket knife is intended to cut through.

I prefer plain edge. I get the overall idea of having a tough portion that can shear through tougher material and not having to worry if it's dulled over time with use. On the daily I don't encounter anything that would dictate using a serrated edge. I keep any blade in my pocket as razor sharp as I can get it. I'm pretty obsessive with keeping them like that.

Yeah I always go back and forth…it seems there is never a ‘correct’ answer. Serrated sure is nice when needed but on a daily basis plain edge takes care of most tasks just fine.

I think your best statement of the video was that it’s more important to have a blade on you than to argue. Back-and-forth of whether serrated or straight blade is more important video.

Absolutely, better to have any blade than to not have one and debate which WOULD be better to carry. :)

The only application for a plain edge I can think of is for cutting cheese. I tried using a Kershaw Barricade as my EDC, but the smooth blade was useless for cutting some things.

Plain edge if you’re a person (like me) who keeps their knives sharp. The only time I could see serrated being useful is if you literally needed to saw something with a hard/rigid surface, like a stick or vinyl cord. Other than that, serrated causes problems when it “snags” while cutting

I had to cut through an inch thick oak dowl once with my Gerber combo DPSF because it was all I had with me. Try that with a plain edge.

I think to cut quicker through a blanket a rope zip tie or jean material or a jacket to get to an emergency a serrated blade is always better to have just in case.. I love otf microtech with a full serrated and a full plain side.

I love my tanto, I work on tires a lot. Sometimes u have tires that the valve stem core has seized. Especially ones with sensors, so I have to puncture the tire. The American tanto pierce easily through a side wall. Low 40 psi no problem. Just make sure to hold onto ur blade good and not be in the line of fire. People have died stabbing tractor trailer tires 80+ psi the knife flew back at them

I don't know why they don't combine serrations with Scandi grind. That'd be unbeatable for clearing brush and working in yard/woods.

I only like to carry a combination blade and I am in need of a new knife and I am watching tons of "Best EDC knife under $100" videos but they are all just plain edge knives.... Anyone have a idea of a really good quality knife under $100 with good steel and a combination blade?

You can get a kershaw blur combo blade 14c28n i thinks that’s about the highest sans blade there is along the lines of d2/154cm which has fairly good edge retention not hard to sharpen and just a great all around user steel

A lot of knife companies today don’t even do a serrated other than the original big 3 microtech benchmade and spyderco. Now while you can get many spyderco knives well under $100 those don’t have great steel it’s not horrible but they don’t hold edge very long but in turn are very quick and easy to sharpen.

If you can justify coming on up just a touch to say around $130 I would suggest benchmade griptillian with s30v an almost perfect all around edc steel keeps an edge pretty good not to bad to sharpen corrosion resistant tho it’s not a 20cv, m390, 204p, m4 ,maxamet super steel s30v is still consider a premium steel and its powdered which is a huge part of what makes premium blade steels what they are.

Plain is 1000% better than un sharable serrated. Why? Serrated Hand file each Serrated and even then, it's not possible to remove bur. Catches on cloth fingers and pull back almost loss of complete knife Little more useful on bread sort of Plane Sharp razor-sharp edge over entire edge No hang up on pull back. No hang up on open Lower cost to make. Serrated on pocketknife or partially serratted is a absolute joke and never ever should have been allowed. Yes On camping a plane and partial serratted may act as a saw sorta maybe but as a very poor and usually dull saw. Plane with partial Serrated is a criminal offence.

Agreed. If u think u may be in a position where u might need a serrated blade, then carry a dedicated serrated blade along with your dedicated straight edge. But always have a straight edge on you

Diamond rods for sharpening serrations. Learn how to sharpen. Combo edge has a lot of versatility. Cutting seatbelts, 550 cord. 100mph tape, web gear, straps etc. served us well. But do you.
