KMS Prinz Eugen: The Lucky Cruiser

Generally considered the luckiest German surface warship of the Second World War, Prinz Eugen is the topic of today's video.
(yes, yes, the Germans didn't use a prefix at this time. People still recognize KMS on sight.)
Though, was Prinz Eugen lucky by her own merit or because other ships around her were *unlucky*? That's a fun question to ask.

    Its amazing to think had the "USS Prinz Eugen" (as IX300) been donated to say, South Vietnam or Taiwan or Argentina etc. then this ship might have been used in the Vietnam War, Quemoy Straits or even the Falklands.

    @@dragonburst8489Nope. They already had overwhelming numbers of ships, cruisers too, to mothball or break. American built ships that were much easier to use than a foreign vessel with a (to say the least) problematic engine design to begin with. Americans had built more or less the best ships in every warship category there was in 30`ies and 40`ies.

    my Grandfather Horst O Schneider (RIP) was Sgt. of Arms.on Prinz Eugen at end of war. When he returned to Berlin, became a police officer for many years. Immigrated to US in late 60"s as a tool maker. The stories told to me about the Bismarch getting full credit for sinking the Hood was for pure political reasons. My grandfather claims the Prinz Eugen was the 1st to strike the Hood. Also stories about seeking help for safe passage back to Berlin, due to the Russians killing every German soldier found. OPA never talked about WWII until his later years of life.

    Reports on the longest range hits say that Prinz Eugen was first to hit the Hood from 20kms range with its 8" main guns and started a fire. Is it possible that fire caused the Hood to explode some minutes later?

    Prinz Eugen's luck spread to her captain. Helmuth Brinkmann lived to his 80's. Hood's officers, Lancelot Holland and Ralph Kerr, died in the Denmark Straits the day of the Battle and Bismarck's officers, Gunther Lutjens and Ernst Lindemann, died 3 days later when Bismarck was sunk. The captain of Prince of Wales, John Leach, went down with Prince of Wales December 10 that year.

    Prinz Eugen represented Hungary in the Kriegsmarine, that's why Miklos Horthy was at the launch ceremony, and his wife christened the ship. Hungary by this time was a landlocked country and so it commissioned a ship in the German navy. Prinz Eugen von Savoya became king of Hungary after leading an western alliance to take back Hungary from the Ottoman Turks, thus the name.

    On here return from Norway, to repair the stern she downed several British bombers, some even with her 8" guns, so there is a reason why no hits were scored. Apart from the unreliable machinery the Hippers was the best CAs of the war.

  • @gildor8866

    @gildor8866

    Have to disagree with that. Even if we ignore her problematic engines (an important part of the design) the Hippers were significantly larger than treaty cruisers but offered only comparable firepower. Cruisers of the Mogami and Baltimore-class, larger than treaty cruisers but still smaller than the Hippers had more firepower. And there are no other factors like significantly better protection to make up for that. Seakeeping wasn't that great either, another common theme with german warships build in the thirties.

  • @niclasjohansson4333

    @niclasjohansson4333

    Firepower is not just about the number of gunbarrels, the Hippers hade the most powerful guns with the highest rate of fire of all WW2 heavy cruisers, and more importantly the best FCS, with by far the best rangefinders. USA and japan had loads of CAs, that did see quite a bit of action, but in all there shooting scored very few hits, even in the calm pacific with perfect "gunnery conditions". The Hippers scored hits on every enemy they shot at even in the roughest seastate, just take for example Hippers action, all alone, against the British troopconvoy on Dec 24, 1940, (22 troopships, 2 carriers, 3 cruisers and 6 destroyers) were she hit 4 ships, knocking the CA Berwick out of action, in heavy seas. The Brits did not score a single hit on the German ship. PE did not see to much fighting vs enemy ships but did hit both Hood and PoW, during the DS battle and 2 destroyers during the chanel dash, without being hit in return. Her armour covered larger parts of the ship than that of other cruisers, and even thou the main belt was only 80mm it was inclined, and backed up by another 50mm sloped "turtle back" armour. Her seakeeping was good enough, any US, japanese or Italian cruisers would have done a lot worse in Atlantic conditions. About the displacement, (often inflated) the Hippers was certanly larger than the older CAs of other navies, and almost identical to the late war Baltimores.

    @@niclasjohansson4333 I don't see the german 8-inch guns outperforming all other 8-inch weapons in ww2, certainly not the french guns on the Duquesne and Algerie-class, similar rate of fire and larger bursting charge (granted, that one saw very little action). Engagements between US and japanese cruisers happened mostly at night, so are hard to compare to the Hippers daylight actions. The one "night" action the Hippers were involved was the Battle of the Barents Sea were Admiral Hipper didn't perform that well either and took damage from two british 6-inch gun cruisers without scoring any hits on them in return. Of course that is just a single data point which can't tell you that much. Same goes the other way round with the short duell between Admiral Hipper and Berwick. Due to the conditions Admiral Hipper could see Berwick clearly but Berwick could hardly make out the Admiral Hipper - small wonder Hipper got the better part in this engagement. Concerning the fire-control: Thanks to their stereoscopic rangefinders german ships usually got the range fast, but performance degraded the longer the engagement lasted due to the operator being worn out faster. Its a choice the germans made hoping to score hits fast and decide the battle with it. Worked spectacularly well with Bismarck sinking Hood, somehow didn't work at all when Bismarck faced Rodney and KGV. At the end of the day when comparing the Hippers with the Baltimores of roughly the same size would say the Baltimores offer more bang for the buck. The 5-inch secondary battery outperforms the 4.1-inch of Hippers in both AA and anti-surface role, the light and medium AA ist better. Also the operational range of the Baltimore is far greater 10.000 nautical miles vs. 7000 for the Hippers, and that really makes a difference when a cruiser is hunting in the Atlantic. And of course the engines are reliable. The only advantage the Hippers are the torpedoes that they have and the Baltimores don't have. But aside from the Japanese I can't find examples of cruisers really making good use of them.

    @@gildor8866 ...of course they were up in size and fire power over German and UK 8inch cruisers. Particularly for UK there was not an opportunity for above limitation cruiser development...the war started in 1939. Nonetheless a number of engagements showed the value of light cruisers too Vs Graf Spee in 1939 and later vs Scharnhorst in a supporting role with Duke of York doing the heavy lifting.
