KMEL San Francisco 1985 Howard Hoffman California Aircheck Video
Ойын-сауық
Howard was the original afternoon DJ at KMEL San Francisco after they switched from Album Rock to Top 40 in 1985. Great show! Full length video available from California Aircheck. californiaaircheck.com

He was probably my original inspiration for becoming a DJ. I remember him on 92PROFM in Providence RI in the mid 70s. He used to have a snorting sound effect of a bull named “Gusto” a nod to the Colt 45 malt liquor commercials. He's the first DJI remember listening to as a kid and relating to, and help them me make the connection of wanting to do this for a living. This air check takes me right back to that. Clever, interesting, great voice, smart ass, quick, efficientg, relates to the music he's playing. Doesn't have to tell long stories off the Internet. Knows how to be a true entertainer. So much of that fun is missing from radio these days. That's part of the reason it's struggling.
I was so glad when they switched formats and not 107.7 KSOL off the air permanently!
I first heard HH when he was doing overnights at WABC in the summer of 1981. Apparently he was doing afternoons at Star in Houston right before that and was asked to make the move to NYC. My impression from those who worked with him in Houston was that he wasn't crazy about giving up PM Drive in Houston, even if was for NYC, since the timeslot was less desirable.
that console was an Autogram. many stations in the '80s used them.

I did radio for more than a decade in another country than the US. That console looks solid and very tactile, never seen anything like it in my environment but I have seen it on American studio clips from the 80's. There's a mic that also appears alot, Electro-voice RE20 is it? American radio had the greatest compression in the 80's I recall. And all the music was played from cart? Right? I rarely see a record player in those clips. That could explain the accurate and fast mixes. Sounded tight and dead solid! Myself I was cuing plastic like mad.

No, not a EV RE20. Looks like a Sennheiser 421 but hard to tell. Most music played from carts, but many stations used turntables, especially the album-oriented rock stations.

FYI, KMEL midday jock Jeff Colson (on just before Hoffman) went from using that console in SF to using the same one when he took a job back in Vegas 2 years later at Q-95 2 years later.

@@Underhills Yeah, Boeing Pilot's right...Sennheiser MD421.
I can’t fathom mixing with one of those old non-graphic boards
WEBE108 had these consoles in the Newsbooth
I used to talk to him on the phone often. I liked Sunny Joe better though. Gosh I miss those days.

Uh don't you mean Sonny Joe Fox?
Was a Seattle jock too in the 80's. I think he was a wanderer, whatever became of the great H. Hoffman?

Last I heard he was the Prod Dir at KABC.
What's the song that starts at 0:55? I recognise it but can't find it anywhere.
