BirdShot IV Hey guys. I have the basic kme system with the four diamond stones and I also bought two lapping films. I've been using a light weight oil to treat the stones and films. I've seen some use water or water with some dishwashing liquid, and others just sharpen dry. What do you recommend for best results? Thanks so much, love your videos!

I don't have clamp style sharpening system. I've heard many others say as you stated - don't take off & start reprofiling every knife you own. People report back later on & say I removed way too much metal when I started sharpening knives. I try to keep my knives touched up with a ceramic rod & strop as much as I can. When I feel I've gone about far as I can I will have the knife done on a system for me. Knife Krazy did me a nice job on a hard D2 steel blade that I couldn't begin to touch with my Sharp Maker. I stay conservative as long as I can to save the blade.

Thanks for teaching me how to sharpen! Forming the burr with your coarsest stone has to be the most important lesson to learn. After that, I like to think of it as each successively finer grit it just removing the scratches from the previous grit.

BirdShots, love your vids, just found your channel a few days ago. The husband wife perspective is sorely needed in this community! I've been sharpening knives for many years, but only as a garage level by taking steel to stone rather than the other way round. I would like to see you guys do a we didn't pick this because... and we nearly picked this, but settled on the KME for this reason kind of video. There are many sharpeners that are similar to the KME so what tilted the scales fully in the KME's favor kind of stuff.

Some people have stated that when the diamond stones are new, they can leave behind some diamonds in the dust that collects between your blade and the stone carrier, resulting in scratched blades since they get dragged across the blade when you're making your strokes. Have you found this to be true, and if so, how do you avoid it happening? Thanks!

You can then get down to about 13 degrees with out flipping it up side down. I also fix mind where it does not move then you stay pretty much the same from tip to hilt. Hope all have a blessed day.

Just sharpened my first knife with the kit I've always been a belt sharpener. I sharpen 80, 220, 400, 600, 1000, 1500, 5000 grit and then a coarse compound on a leather belt, maybe also a fine compound on a leather belt to finish and polish after removing burr. The 6 lapping stones really didn't seem like they were polishing that well, I was using the honing oil on the lapping stones with the kit. Just wondering do u use the oil on the lapping stones and how many passes do you use with the lapping stones?

I would like to invest in this system. I am currently using a lansky, which does work, just not the easiest to work with. I find it hard to justify it in my mind, the money and other knives I could buy with it. I farm for a living and hard use my knives. Very rarely do I get a polished edge. On my non work knives it would be nice.

Merry Christmas from Alaska =) Awesome super informative video , ty ! I just ordered the KME basic kit from Amazon , comes with the 140 , 300 , 600 and 1500 stones.. My question is this , I am a hard-core prepper , and I love to have back ups of my back ups , so I was wondering about the longevity and lifespan of these stones , and should I order a couple more sets for storage ? I'm expecting only moderate use on my KME system , as I only have three knives ( 2 benchmades and a wusthof ) and I also use Japanese whetstones. So does anyone have experience with these KME stones lasting a year , 3 years , 5 years etc.. with moderate to low use ? Thank you so much for any help =) 19 hours ago

I hope you still read these ! I have a KME I get a full even burr on both sides of the knife using my extra course stone . Then I proceed to use my course stone then fine extra fine removing scratches of previous stones with my KME basic kit . Then I lightly removed the burr and it would barley cut anything ? This keeps happening which is confusing because after my burr I form with my extra course stone I check for sharpeness and it shaved my hair like butter . Any recommendations?? Thanks ! I also use a strop and used a higher angle to try removing burr no results

  • @BirdShotIV

    @BirdShotIV

form a strong burr on one side only, remove and do the same thing to the other side. If you have formed a burr throughout the entire edge, you have apexed the edge and it will be sharp. It sounds like you may be leaving some of that burr on one side. The edge will act super dull if you do so

I have the exact same problem with my KME. I've also found that it goes too steep at the heel of the edge at the same time. That leaves me with an overly steep and sharpened heel and an untouched tip. I've pretty much had this problem with every knife I've sharpened with the KME from cheap Kershaws to very expensive Spydercos. The only thing that has helped has been to adjust the blade to the center of the sharpening range and only go a few inches to either side of that center. It's more trouble than I want to deal with. You left this comment 4 months ago, have you found any resolutions?

Since watching your videos on the KME system, I have seriously considered purchasing one. I was wondering if either of you have had trouble clamping full flat grind knives with the KME? From all of the videos and reviews I have watched on youtube there does not seem to be any issues with full flat grind knives, but I just wanted to make sure before buying the KME system. I am currently using the Lansky system. Although it is a fairly good system, there are several limitations with it. One of these limitations is with clamping FFG blades. The clamp on the Lansky system does not make full contact with the blade. This causes the blade to rock up and down when sharpening. Does the KME system hold FFG knives securely? Thank you both very much for your help! I greatly enjoy watching your channel. Keep up the good work!

for the first sharpening system, go with diamond stones. sometimes i use lansky clamp and DMT stones (you can buy seperate parts of most systems, including cheap chinese alternatives, and combine all into one). when i use lansky clamp, i rig the stone into vise, and use it as whet stone, much easier to use. and get few coarse stones, factory grinds suck, even on brand knives, and needs reprofiling. but have in mind, after sharpening, you have to maintain (touch up) the edge as long as you can without sharpening again (sharpmaker, car door glass, whatever), because each time you clamp the blade, the angles will be different, and you'll have to remove more metal... those angles depends on positioning of the clamp on the blade, force that was used to tighten it, presure on the stones, so it's not very precise

very 101. hollow grind will always be sharpest, i like them but it is all about what work you are doing, i am learning to use their convex rod foe knives that are very pricey, ,everybody know about the bird lol. v shaped knives are just pretty but will not cut as well as a convex edge, so easy, get old knives in thrift and you will learn on u tube in no time. on the push stroke your hand naturaly curves and makes your flat grind into a convex and stropping will keep it true for quite a while in the field, in time you have to go back to a descent Japaneses water stones and sharpen. no need to re profile after the first con vexing, you are just re sharpening , and removing micro chips or dings of metal that rolled over . . but i like the idea of a precise convex system for more an expensive good looking gentle persons folders. hand convexing lay knive down on stone on the beginning push toward end 1l3rd of stone you let your hand slightly turn in to knife to part right before apex , this will start your knife in convexing process , dooent happen right away it takes time b/c you are not an expert like virtuovoice, on utube, he teaches as much as he can, you can learn a lot from him.

try it after the 1500 diamond and the hard translucent and let me know how you like the results..to me leaves a beautiful refined and "polished" edge.

BirdShot IV, I invested in one the other day and got one for my birthday, I'm a kid and wanted a KME instead of an Xbox or something. anyways, I have a question. if I have a lot of sharpening knowledge and experience, would I be safe reprofiling some knives? also, how long does it take for KME and other stuff take to ship?

probably not as important for the kme crew as the free hand crew but making sure the knife is flat on the stone and not just riding the shoulder is a common mistake I see a lot. great vid :-)

great video guys.. but if all fails. just call ron..lol do you still do the sharpie with all stones even with the stone thickness compensator?? I used to..but have since eliminated that step. also have you tried using the translucent and surgical black arkansas stones after the 1500 grit diamonds?? I have found them to leave a virtual mirror finish..granted I will spend extra time refining pattern with the surgical black. the no up stroke comment wad funny..been there..I also just use down strokes with the lapping films..just need reminding myself it's not a stone in the carriage..old habits are hard to break..lol again great video.. the Lil roo cut out was cute..lol

You guys have introduced me into the world of knives. I never saw the appeal of knives but now I can't get enough of them. My knowledge of knives is still very basic. I was wondering how you came to the decision on the KME vs other sharpening setups. I am looking to sharpen my own knives but would like something that can sharpen a pocket knife to a chef's knife. If you have any input to direct me towards a certain sharpening system I would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

Thank you! The KME will do a variety of sizes and styles, no problem there. We went with this one because it accomplished everything I wanted in a fixed system yet was less expensive and had tons of accessories. Talking with the people at KME sealed the deal, great customer service

The problem I found with clamp systems; if the main blade grind is not true on both sides, it will translate into the bevel size. One bevel size will appear larger than the other. This really starts to show the more acute your angle. Clamp systems like lansky, I would switch angle from side to side. Say 18 deg on one side, 22 on the other, to compensate. I'd be interested in hearing if you guys had this problem, and what you did to fix it.

generically speaking, when I have an uneven grind I will monitor my time spent on each side to even it out. Flipping back and forth watching and adjusting

Get an Edgepro. No blade clamp so no readjusting, and if you add a drill stop collar and you no longer need to sharpie between stones.

You can get diamond stones now on Amazon for $6 each. They work pretty good. A learning curve is involved but it works pretty good and it is all metal. Thank you for the video, I learned some things today
