Kmart Smart Plan Sales VHS Video from early 1990's - Joe Antonini Era!

Ойын-сауық

And the Kmart nostalgia continues here for your infotainment! This is a in-store sales associate training video for the Kmart Smart Plan, which was a replacement warranty program. This allowed customers to purchase a replacement contract for practically anything electronic for a small price -- which was very reasonable in my opinion.
I remember selling a ton of these and they paid commission (at least when it debuted). In actuality, it's a great concept and I am not sure if this is still available anywhere in the marketplace (likely, yes, somewhere).
Interesting to see the early 1990's Kmart signage. In my opinion, this was my favorite Kmart look which appears to be from around 1992-1994. And look at the well stocked shelves and beautiful store during the good times of Joe Antonini.
What a shame that there is no B-roll footage available or additional shots of this great looking store.
Finally, the bodacious blonde at 11:30 might be "the one that got away". How cool was she with her assertive VCR shopping skills in the 1990's??
With all the other Kmart nostalgia items I possess, these were "permanently borrowed" from the store for future use -- such as today!

I find it amusing that the intro and outro are SO trying to be Rosie and Penny. And I love the early 90s Kmart signage package and how their stores looked! My favored Kmart in Carroll, Iowa moved to a brand new store in 1992 from their tiny store at the top of the hill, and it closed due to end of lease in 2017, not because of bad sales or anything, but because Eddie Lampert is a selfish person, and doesn't care about whether Kmart lives or dies...it's just another real estate transaction.

Didn't have to push those warranties like they did in the video, but had to push the store credit card. And the store I worked at didn't have those registers. It was the more antequated IBM 4683 POS terminals.

Almost looks like an Ames with Kmart signage. Nowadays of course the register prompts the cashier to ask the customer about the replacement plans.

This was around the time Kmart still had stores in Canada (which went bankrupt in 1998, stores sold to Zellers), Czech Republic and Slovakia (which were later sold off to Tesco around the mid-1990s when Kmart's American stores were in trouble...) and had a 51% share in the Kmart Australia joint venture since 1969 with Coles New World Supermarkets/Coles Group (which was since sold back to Coles-Myer in 1994) in addition to their core U.S., Puerto Rico, Guam and U.S. Virgin Islands stores.

I love how these old style videos will always say at the beginning: "This video is broken down into two sections." A 2018 person watching the video might scream, "JUST TELL ME!"

Oh, goodness, Kmart had absolutely the worst price check system in the history of marts, sale items were never logged into the system as sale items ( Dollar General tries to run the same scam) so you'd wait 40 minutes as the cashier would first: squawk Price Check! into the mic, then management would fail to appear, said cashier would pick at the sticker or stare at the bar code for about ten minuets , then ask where you found it, you didn't recall where you found it, cashier would lean on the counter asking nobody in particular where Barfy or Bob was so THEY could see where it came from, Barfy or Bob would also fail to appear either because they didn't exist or because they were hiding in the restrooms. cashier would get twitchy because she had no idea what she was doing , you would say forget it because you had to get home and Sale Item would get hidden away under the counter due to its immense staggering value. Walmart effectively killed them off, not because Walmart was better or cheaper but because Kmart excects refused to undercut Walmart. If anything, Kmart priced themselves out of business with the same Chinese junk.

  • @shaneinkster4775

We had Kmarts here in Canada for awhile until it got bought out by Zellers and that’s no longer in service after that got bought out by Target and that to is no longer in service in Canada it’s still in service in the United States where it’s actually doing better. Where I live in Saskatoon we only had one Kmart opened in the beginning of the 90s and state open until the late 90s when converted to a Zellers and that stayed until the early 2010s when it closed but the one that was Kmart didn’t go to Target like the other two in my town did that one sat vacant for six years until about a year ago when they put in some office space a fabric retailer a fitness gym and a Giant Tiger (a smaller type of department store) and two years before that they put in a blood laboratory
