I agree - Klezmer is one of the most under-rated styles of music - In fact - it is truly beautiful.

Contributed to American jazz music, especially during the swing era- through Artie Shaw and Benny Goodman.

Listening to the bass part and looking at the clarinet resting on the floor, that must be a contra-alto or contra-bass clarinet, not a bass clarinet.

duhem7 It's a bass clarinet that goes down to C, which is why it's longer than the low Eb basses you're probably used to seeing.

duhem7 Well, they do make Bass Clarinet models where it has a Cello-like range. You can hear the resonance of it. You can tell that it's a Bass Clarinet. The timbre is more smoother than an Sub- Bass. But it can also be a Sub-Alto. The ones that shares the same composition of the Alto Saxophone. Which is the Eb Scale for them in natural attunement.

Very enjoyable sounds great !!!... a bit too polished though and too "in tune"... like classically the trained musicians that they are. Klezmer is a little more rough and raw... the notes are more "slid into". You have to listen to a lot of klezmer to hear that difference. Naftule Brandwein is a good example of raw.

i agree with you. it's a nice "academic" version of the music, and not meant to convey the intensity of the "real" thing. Jewish clarinet playing needs to have "krechtzen" , a Yiddish onomatopoeia word meaning the kind of sigh/grunt that expresses a bit of worldworn resignation to reality. I had a cousin who could play it the right way.

@zoharisrael no offense meant, but the jewish ashkenazi culture was heavily influenced by german literature and music. If u can understand yiddish, u won't have trouble getting around in Germany as u will be able to understand German language...
