Klaus Nomi - Death - Dido's Lament

Музыка

Death is a song from Klaus Nomi's second album, Simple Man which is a remake of the aria Dido's Lament from the Opera Dido and Æneas by Henry Purcell.
Just an incredible version. This really shows off Klaus's amazing countertenor voice.
lyrics:
Recitative
Thy hand, Belinda, darkness shades me,
On thy bosom let me rest,
More I would, but Death invades me;
Death is now a welcome guest.
Aria
When I am laid, am laid in earth,
May my wrongs create
No trouble, no trouble in thy breast;
Remember me, remember me, but ah! forget my fate.
Remember me, but ah!
forget my fate.
The first portrait used in this montage was taken by George DuBose.

    I would love to see everyone commenting bad technique to show any evidence that they have ever taken a single singing lesson in opera. To go up so smoothly, to enunciate to meticulously, to project so resonantly, thats a master class of technique and most importantly nerve. Which is why after what, 30 years and no press coverage, that were all here listening to him

    I'm a trained opera singer and have done this role. This version gives me chills. It's perfection and very in keeping with the era. I'd take two wild notes from Klaus Nomi over 100 "perfect" notes from Renee Boring as F*ck Fleming.

    @@kevinosborne3528 He was trained, took so many private lessons he could afford, but was never "officially fully trained" per se. But yes, he definitely was a master of of his art. He did a lot of practicing when he worked at the opera house in West Berlin before he moved to NY. Also sang on a gay club occasionally. I don't know 🤔 if he took any lessons in Germany, but he did in NY. So incredibly sad he died so young.

    I was not aware of Klaus Nomi until today when I saw his video of Purcell’s “Cold Song” recorded just before his death. I was enthralled. Then I watched this video. This Purcell song makes me cry every time I hear it no matter who performs it but knowing his fate and the passion he put into this performance, I couldn’t stop crying from start to finish. What a loss. Thankfully, we have video and he will live forever.

    I've heard quite a few performances of this song, and I think his performance is the best one. It's true he's a little out of tune, but I find it an advantage, not a drawback of his interpretation! I think he did that on purpose. Thanks to a higher tune of his singing, the whole song sounds much more dramatic. Like if a lonely demon of death sung it, not a human. When you think about the fact he was recording this song actually awaiting his own death, it becomes one of the most touching songs.

    sometimes feeling is more important than technical perfection. one good example is "candle in the wind(1997)" wich was recorded twice the same day, once the live recording from the service, then a studio recording. i have both on CD, the live recording is not perfect, but it transports the feelings. The Studio recording broke Sales records, is technically better, but artistically it is meaningles.

    There's singing with operatic accuracy in a formulaic fashion with the singer then moving onto the next famous aria and then there's pouring one's heart and soul into a performance. Yes, this isn't perfect in terms of musicality but it's sublimely divine in terms of how it hits my soul. 💖

    It is not the lack of technique, but the passion he pours into singing, listen to Callas, she was extremely trained, she could sing all the ornaments, great control over her range, but it was her unrestrained passionate singing that made her a legend. Don't confuse technique with restrain, listen to older singers, full of affectations, as that is the way you have to sing in order to put emotion into opera.

    actually, his diagnose about AIDS was done in 1982, he died in 1983, so he knew perfectly about his situation. fact is that at that time AIDS was known, but AZT, the only drug used at that time, did more harm than help....

    But sometimes we make decisions without knowing that they can have an effect on our life. Klaus didn't know about AIDS, nobody did at that time. Maybe he had to be sacrificed so we could learn, I don't know.

    My father, who died last year at 89, was a wonderful tenor. He was a soloist in the Yale Glee Club and sang in many symphony based choruses. He hated male falsetto. Except for this one. He had great respect for Klaus Nomi. The quality of his voice was simply incomparable.

    This reminds me of Kathleen Ferrier's singing Mahler's "Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen", which was also performed in the face of her own death from breast cancer. I guess, the intensity and truthfulness of such artists in those truly tragic moments can't be surpassed . I bow to them!

    You are so very missed! Then, I was a very young fellow flabbergasted by your art. I thought C-3PO is starting to sing. %) It would be great to hear your voice again in some new produced soundscape , because your voice will always take peoples attention and heart.
