Kitesurf Self Rescue

Спорт

Kiteboard / Kitesurf self rescue tutorial.
Will help you understand the basic principles of the self rescue, and revises the steps involved to support your lessons. Hopefully, you can use this video to get the concept, which will give you more time to practice with your instructor.
To make the footage as clear as possible this was shot on a clear day on a sand bank, on a large kite in around 15knots. In most situations you would be using this technique in deep water. I filmed a deep water version, but it's not so easy to see what's happening with bar and lines and therefore not a good visual guide of the technique.
You will find variations on the self rescue technique. Such as some people may wrap the excess safety line in figures of 8, or may use 5 line kites. However, the key principles stay the same.

    Had to self rescue today from about 400m offshore with a side-shore wind... was not methodical when collecting my lines and regretted it immensely when I felt myself becoming entangled. High surf made me seriously worry about the kite being taken by a wave and dragging me with it. Managed to collect all lines once at the kite and make a sail to get back. Very scary situation that you should practice for. This is a fantastic video!

    Sooo...this is a nice clean video and demonstration done in safe, shallow waters. But just keep in mind everyone , it is not at all this easy when in rougher conditions and in deep waters where you cannot touch your feet to the bottom at all. And it is much more difficult in those conditions to wind up your lines as well. It can really be exhausting. So if you are a beginner, a kiteboarding life vest will be very helpful in that type of situation. It would be nice if you guys can make a video in these real-like conditions.

    1:47, when looping the safety line around the bar, you keep the chicken loop away with your other hand thumb, to avoid having the chicken loop stuck near the bar...this simple trick is making the looping far more easier than having this bloody chicken loop to avoid when you're looping your lines. Took me a while to realise I was making this mistake at least. Thanks for your videos !

Thankfully I had an experienced kiter nearby who came to assist me and managed to drag my kite back towards the shore slightly (& then finally the waves and current pulled me into shore)

    Clear explanation and ideal example 👌 It would be great to have a updated example of where this is done in deep water and with a kitboard too. When I have had to self rescue I tried to swim upwind to collect my board. Then I start wrapping the lines (while keeping the board between my legs). When sailing back in you can place the board and bar on the front tube. I generally try to keep the board with fins up as not to damage my canopy. Off course safety is priority and if you are in an area with onshore wind and or waves most likely the board will end up on the beach if you loose it. Or another kiter might collect it for you.

    Great video, covered all the main points, thanks guys. When you get to the kite and flip it over, make sure to double check that all lines are clear and not wrapped around any part of yourself. And if you are coming back to the beach through a shorebreak, don't forget to let go of the bridle and hold onto the centre of the leading edge tightly so the wave does not cut your bridle hand or rip the kite out of your hands. And marco boersma is right, it's a different game altogether in stronger wind and rough water so it's a good idea to make sure you can do the SR in whatever conditions you are kiting in.

    Important: Would be helpful to mention how to safely secure one's board during self-rescue and extra equipment, i.e. leash, needed to ensure not losing board or drifting too far away. Also acts as an additional floatation item in the event kite may deflate.

    If you need to self rescue in high winds, leashing the board is risky! If something goes wrong you can get hurt quite quickly. I’d just forget about the board and save yourself. Your board will be found eventually.. Always keep your leash connected to the bar so it cant get away from you. I wouldnt recommend also leashing the board with your safety leash

    Love Your video series & always recommend to students (esp visual overlays)!! Instructor disclaimer is critical bc there's a few points I'd add - namely notice which direction is -Down-wind/Down-current- after pulling QR ... Only wrap lines & retrieve kite as you can stay UP from lines ... After securing flag line Student couldn't wrap all 4 on bar without towing back on safety line bc of high pull - after you chill in the kite you can wrap the remaining lines (and bc you traveled back by staying UP you shouldn't be too tangled) ... P.S flipping a 13+ kite in open water is practically a lesson itself haha. In fact i demonstrated on a large kite to prove that point+pull & then held kite-raft once student climbed in. Thank you so much Profe.!!

    Hello Sid. It really is easy to self rescue in deep water ... once you have enough practice. High winds can be a problem, you're correct. If the wind is strong enough, there can be a lot of pull on a kite even when it's flagged out on a single line.

    I’ve got a 3 day kite lesson coming up and trying to learn stuff in principle before hand. These videos are very clear and concise. I bet that’s really hard when you’re floating in water with any swell, what with all the the lines floating everywhere and the bar at head height.

  • @kitesurfcollege

    Enjoy your lessons. Yes, it's more difficult in deep water. You drift with the kite and can't see what's going on as much. That's why it's a good idea to practice in shallow water until the procedure is easy for you. You will practice this in your lessons of course. I would also recommend that people practice the self rescue after they've finished lessons. For example, if the wind drops and you can't ride anymore, then you can finish your session with a self rescue in the shallows (away from waves, or sharp objects that could damage the kite). Also bare in mind there are situations where the self rescue is impossible. If strong wind or waves are pulling firmly on your kite after it has been flagged out, then the self rescue becomes dangerous.

    @@airindiana if you find yourself alone and need to land then the self rescue is the most fool proof option - it's the first technique shown in the self landing video. One other thought, most safe kitesurfing spots have at least a few kiters these days. If there's no one at your local kite spot: either you live somewhere very remote (which sounds nice), or perhaps it doesn't have suitable conditions. Generally you need the wind to have passed over several kilometers of water (or very smooth ground) before it reaches you, in order for the wind to have minimal gusts. If the wind is passing around hills, trees and buildings before reaching you, then it will become gusty and dangerously unpredictable. I'm hoping to make a video about assessing conditions soon.

    God has said in the Quran: { O mankind, worship your Lord, who created you and those before you, that you may become righteous - ( 2:21 ) [He] who made for you the earth a bed [spread out] and the sky a ceiling and sent down from the sky, rain and brought forth thereby fruits as provision for you. So do not attribute to Allah equals while you know [that there is nothing similar to Him]. ( 2:22 ) And if you are in doubt about what We have sent down upon Our Servant [Muhammad], then produce a surah the like thereof and call upon your witnesses other than Allah, if you should be truthful. ( 2:23 ) But if you do not - and you will never be able to - then fear the Fire, whose fuel is men and stones, prepared for the disbelievers.( 2:24 ) And give good tidings to those who believe and do righteous deeds that they will have gardens [in Paradise] beneath which rivers flow. Whenever they are provided with a provision of fruit therefrom, they will say, "This is what we were provided with before." And it is given to them in likeness. And they will have therein purified spouses, and they will abide therein eternally. ( 2:25 ) Quran

    Okay so I'm assuming you have an extra line that connects directly to 2 centre lines at the Y. When you release your chicken loop, your leash holds this extra line and places tension on the two centre lines only. This will depower the kite a lot, but often it does not disable the kite - and there is a good chance of the kite flying even after using your chicken loop eject. For a self rescue with this design, you want to eject your chicken loop and then make sure that the kite is completely killed with the leading edge in the water. You will then work your way along the mini 5th line to the bar. When you reach the bar, you wrap away and secure the mini 5th on the bar. Now you wrap away all remaining lines to reach the kite. If you're new to kiting, I would recommend getting a bar that flags out on 1 line not 2. With this you can be much more confident that the kite will be disabled after you eject the chicken loop.

  • @kitesurfcollege

    @kitesurfcollege

    +Ole P. Hey. Good question. Yes you should be able to complete this technique using whichever line you depowered the kite on. Make sure the bar has travelled a kite's width along the oh-shit handle line and is fully flagged out. You'll want your leash attached to the oh shit handle. Then work along the line from your o shit handle; when you reach the bar, secure this line on the bar end then wrap away all lines as normal. By the way, what bar do you have? Does it not have a centre line safety? Or were you asking this in case you can't use your centre line safety? Cheers.

  • @kitesurfcollege

    @kitesurfcollege

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Noah. Once you practice the self rescue enough, it becomes easier, and eventually you can easily manage your board as well. Generally in deep water I leave the board on my feet (being careful not to get lines caught on it). In shallow water, I let the board float next to me. The kite & lines are always the primary concern. The kite can keep you afloat, help you move and makes you way more visible. So if you are struggling with the board it is best to leave it and focus on the kite.

  • @V_Litty
    @V_Litty4 жыл бұрын

    "flip your kite over this way" = you most likely got ahold of it in the center, transfer it hand-to-hand until you're holding it on one of the edges, then you will be able to flip it easily. Then pull the bridle leading to the farther end to bring that edge up.

    When learning, if you fall off the board, you want to leave it behind. You even want your footstraps to be loose. If you're attached to the board and the kite pulls, it can be painful and causes other problems. Many advanced riders get boots instead of simple straps, and then they are attached to the board.

  • @kitesurfcollege

    @kitesurfcollege

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hi. If the kite is completely deflated, you can't use it as a float or sail. Instead, when you get to the kite, you probably want to roll up the kite. You can roll up the kite starting at one wing tip - as you go along you can close the strut valves to keep some air in the kite - also detach the lines. When the kite is rolled up, you can use your leash or harness to wrap around the kite and keep it packed away neatly. If you're some distance from shore, it is much easier to drag a rolled up kite. Is that what you meant?

    Unrealistically forgiving conditions make this video really kind of dangerous... I accidentally QR'd in 20 mph side shore wind w/14m kite in deep water today. Tough going! Everyone should have a plan for real added factors, including 1. keeping your board with you. 2. Over-head deep water in howling wind (can't pull kite in to wind lines - hard to not get legs wound up in safety line before winding it up) 3. Fatigue 4. Returning to shore. Recommendations: Unhook leash, run through board handle, rehook. Find a side-ON option or don't go out - side shore temptation is trouble. Seek shallows, know where the deep water begins b/c being able to stand makes all the difference! Wear a PFD!! so fatigue and stress are less of a factor. Watch deep water pack down and other realistic self rescue videos. Take off the rosy glasses - sh*t happens! All this said, I appreciate very much all that KC videos have taught me/us.

    Great Video! =D I went out on my 8m after I was out in around 27 knots gusting to 37knots which was definitely manageable. However when the wind picked up to 50 knots I was still managing with my edge but knew when I got closer to shore and waist deep that I'd be pulled like a rag doll so I figured it would be better to release donkey dick and let waves take me and kite to shore and have a kiter grab my kite. I found when I got to standing after doing this that to try and pull on that middle line was pretty damn tough! Plus the waves were jolting me every now and then. The kiter got close to the kite before it rolled over and jolted me even more. After the third time this happened I released everything as it was getting risky. I love the video! But what would you recommend in unexpected extreme weather and waves like my scenario?

    Good question. It is not safe to self rescue with that wind strength or significant waves pushing on your kite. Firstly, I think the best tactic generally is to try and avoid getting that overpowered in the first place. Keep an eye on the weather - if you feel the power building and see a weather front or tall, dark clouds approaching head in. Land the kite, let the front reach you and see what it does to the wind. You usually have enough warning when weather is changing, but not always. The worst situation I was in, was in Rosebud near Melbourne. It was an easy 18knots warm North wind, and I was on a 17m2. In under 2 minutes an antarctic air system pushed in and the wind climbed to 56knots South. One guy left his kite in the air, and it split in half. As I began getting over-powered (25kn). I put the kite in the water at 3 (the beach was on the right) and was going to let it drag me in and have my friend catch it (there were no waves luckily). But then the wind was too powerful (even with the kite at 3 I was getting pulled violently) so I ejected the chicken loop - the kite flattened out nicely, luckily, and I was able to get hold of it using the safety line and making sure no other lines were upwind of me. But I was ready to also use the leash the whole time, as there was a good chance the chicken loop eject wasn't going to work well in that kind of wind. In summary, I would say: 1 keep an eye out for weather changes and take a break before fronts or cumulonimbus clouds reach you . 2 if you're not too overpowered yet, get someone to catch your kite at the water's edge (don't go on land yourself) 3 if you're over powered you can use the chicken loop eject to drop the kite near the water's edge and get a friend to grab it from the shallows 4 and if that doesn't work use your chicken loop eject and then leash eject to get rid of the kite. It's not swell and deep water that's a problem. It's swell in shallow water that makes a self rescue impossible.
