While I really enjoy Damo's videos I have to say this one is a bit on the biased side when it comes to comparing the two sports. The main issue is that we don't all live in Maui or Jupiter Beach, and the reality is what Harry kept trying to highlight, that the key to wingfoiling isn't actually the wing part but that it's a great means to and end for foil surfing without having to have a friend with a jetski. I also would caution people that learning to foil behind a jetski is probably the fastest way to learn, it's quite a bit more dangerous than learning to foil with a kite. The reason for this is that when you crash the kite will hold you up and pull you away from the foil, opposed to the jetski where you'll tend to pitch over and fall on top of your foil. For me foiling is a strictly light wind activity, if it's 14 knots or more than I'd rather be on my surf board with a kite (like a lot of people I don't live in a spot with long period ocean swell). My whole setup of surfboard (6 lbs) kite (7.5 lbs) bar (1.5 lbs) is under 15 lbs, small and easy to carry. For a wingfoil setup the board alone without the foil attached will weight between 12-20 lbs. Another major factor separating the two sports is draft, any time you are foiling you'll need at least chest deep water. Many of my favourite kite sessions take place in knee deep water. This is a big factor in learning the sport too, learning to kite in knee to waist deep water is relaxing and fun vs. learning in deep choppy water is stressful and challenging. This doesn't really apply to wingsurfing as the only phase that can be done in shallow water you'll need a stand up paddle board anyway so depth is irrelevant. While you could kite those conditions you probably wouldn't because of the off-shore wind (or be willing to abandon your kite if you got in to trouble). Some more of the things you should consider when looking at wing vs. kite when using a foil: - Wingfoil is more physical, for your arms and upper body, a plus, and still not so much that you get tired fast. - Wingfoil is better and safer in offshore wind. - Wingfoil is far better in some spots like harbours or similar, where you dont have access or room to launch a kite, or where too risky because of masts. - Wingfoil is, for most, learning something fun and new, always good. - Wingfoil is not as risky if the wind suddenly goes nuclear, or you make a mistake. - Wingfoil can give you a very free powerless great feel when surfing a wave. - Wingfoil is better for really bad quality wind (inland lakes). - Wingfoil has less chance of major injury (not tethered to power source). - Kitefoil only takes up a fraction of the space in your car, lighter and smaller. - Kitefoil is way faster and easier to rig and get out fast, beats wingfoil by miles, also a tad faster setting down and packing. - Kitefoil is easier and faster to get out through the whitewater in waves, and if needed you can start faster between two waves. - Kitefoil is a lot more agile and low drag and you can turn tight and lively on waves. - Kitefoil let you pack your kite dry, as opposed to wing which is wet when you pack, and if you use several wing sizes, they all end up wet in the car. - Kitefoil can ride foiling in a lot bigger windrange downwards - you can still start if the wind drops, unlike on a wingfoil where there is an absolute individual lower limit, where you are parked for good if no gust. - Kitefoil allows for the tiniest of boards, weighing in at under 5 lbs. - Kitefoil allows for bigger wind ranges without re-rigging. - Kitefoil allows for much better jumping. - Kitefoil allows for much better "touring" due to speed and upwind ability. - Kitefoil is less boring in flat water. - Kitefoil has less chance of breaking gear. - Kitefoil has less chance of minor injury (kite pulls you away from foil on falls, smaller+lighter board).

Angus, I think yours is the longest KZread comment I've ever read. I can't disagree with any of it. I think the industry overhypes winging's low end. I need a good deal of wind to have fun on mine it doesn't come close to windfoiling's low end let alone kitefoiling's in my experience. It's still pretty fun, but as you said, it sure would be best as a means to an end for hitting long period swell.

Solid response! I agree that this was pretty one-sided, however why do you think rigging a kite is faster and easier than rigging a wing? I would actually give that advantage to the wing (the wing has no lines, no harness, tiny footprint, much smaller).

The wing has a foil attached though, and unless you allow it to corrode and fuse together you have to take it apart and put it together for every session. For my foil it takes about 5 minutes for each. Pumping my 9m kite and attaching lines only takes about 3 minutes as I use a line keeper. Also many kite foilers use ram air kites with bars permanently attached, for them the setup takes about 1 minute.

@@freddydad1 I think it's probably easier to learn with the kite if you already have the kite skills, it's certainly cheaper as you can pick up used kitefoil gear for next to nothing these days.

Great vids Damien thanks very much. I windsurf, kitesurf (surfboard) and kitefoil. I love the look of winging in waves but the one thing that puts me off pulling the trigger on gear is the thought of re-starting between breaking waves after a wipe out? At least with kiting the kite's still in the air. Can you reassure me this isn't the pain in the ass I'm imagining? A future video perhaps

Inspiring interview, thank you! I'm just about to make the transition myself (from kitefoiling in waves in recent years, on Moses 633 + BRM clouds). My first reaction to winging was exactly like Henry, and foiling side by side with wingers in waves made me appreciate the beauty of truly parking your power source. In person it looks even more fun than on videos. My gear will be here in a month or so (Moses W950 + Moses 98L board, F.one strike 5m) , super excited!

I did the same as you 2 years ago from BRM clouds and Moses foiling to wingfoil. You won't regret it. It will make you a much better foiler. your kite handling skills may decline if you wing too much. .

Great video! I am 56y/o, Windsurfed between 10 and 40, taught my wife and 3 kids how to windsurf. My daughter wanted to kitesurf. Switched to 100% kitesurfing in 2010, my wife had a really hard time learning it. I ordered my first wingfoil today. Looking forward to discover a new sport with my family. Just my $0.02: I bought some foil gear from a kiter who now wings. We were talking and I noticed she was missing a finger. A kite accident cut her finger clean off. Can't say I've seen a winger do that. Winging seems much safer to power/de-power and get out in high wind. Kiting seems much more difficult to start and get in, but they go MUCH faster and boost MUCH higher.

Great interview! I put off kiting for years due to the lesson portion and perceived financial gamble (would I like it etc). Then came winging. As a surfer living next to a huge river but 30 minutes from the beach, I would have this recurring dream of surfing in the river (years before foiling). Now over two years into prone foiling and a year into wing foiling and I’m literally surfing wind bumps in the river just like in my dreams. Couldn’t be more stoked on the sport. I surf foil and wing foil 95% of the time now. Waves are rarely worth fighting crowds on a short board in my area.

That's interesting! I've had recurring dreams of finding good surf spots here in the North and Baltic sea. I'm a landlocked surfer and have had to travel all over the world to get surf all my life. Then one day it hit me when I saw kitesurfers shredding wave faces in the chaotic blown out North sea one hour drive from where I live. Been kiting for 3 years now and loving it! It's my methadone ❤️. Not convinced about those wings quite yet though 😄

Great video guys! I am 53, and recently I got a JetSki to get us out at weekends and build memories. This got me interested in wakeboarding with the jetski, as just riding one has limited fun, but then I saw this wing foiling and thought I must try that, it's something I can do on days when it's too windy for the jetski. I was also thinking a lot about kite surfing, I would love to try it but was a bit scared at my age. I was into power kitting about 12 years ago, so I have some kite experience. This video has shown me that the two sports can be used for different days, so I must now get some lessons on kite surfing and see how I go. Your comment about starting winging alone has given me a push to go out, I have just ordered a SUP with a dagger fin, so I will start on that with the wing to gain wing experience, and then I can practice foiling with my son pulling me with the jetski. Thanks for all the info in this video! 👍

Love your videos and they are so informative. I think the Wing will take off in Watersports being much easier and less worry. Kiting is a fun sport but can be very difficult and dangerous. Wing you don't have to mess with lines. Both sports are different plus fun and both sports are fun with the foil of course.

Great video. I am completly aligned with all you said even if I am not a kite surfer. I am a 62 years old windsurfer and I started foil last year. But now I want to wing because of the simplicity of the gear and the ability of surfing. I have never tried kite because of the space constraint on the beach and also security. But surfing is for me difficult, I need good side wind condition and I am quickly exhausted. I think that with wing you can surf in much more conditions than in windsurf and even in kitesurf.

Fantastic interview! I LOVE this guys attitude on life! Who wouldn't want to share the water with such a wonderful human being. I am a 55yo and I am typical of this new sport. I windsurfed as a kid. Hobie. Wakeboarding. Then Kite boarding 5 years ago. I have been wing foiling for the past year. I'm Hooked! "Kite-mares" happen. "Wing-wares" don't. Wing-foiling is SO much easier and stress free. I can launch from so many more places without ANY assistance. Wing-foiling is Stress Free! It is perfect for when you are over 50 and just want to get on the water and cruise. About the only time that I grab the kite and twin tip is when the water is congested with seaweed. Otherwise, I live to Wing Foil in my backyard.

Hi Drlile do you rate wing foiling over windsurfing? I'm 53 and want to get back on the water. I used to windsurf into my 20's then had a major long break and a few years back started SUP on local lake as the sea nearby isn't great. Currently researching what to do next, buy a new windsurfing board and kit or try something new.

@@woody1380 There is something magical about being up on foil. It is quiet and smooth. I started with a big 210 s1 I was in high school and it was my only way to get on the water on the Jersey shore. I could never afford a boat back then. Size matters. Start off with a 130 l board with a 5 or 6 m wing and a large foil. It is much easier to depower than it is to try to generate more power. I transitioned from windsurfing to kiteboarding and now to Wing foiling. I can see me Wing boiling for the next 20 years. Launching is another key to the wing foiling. You can launch from anywhere that you can get access to the water by yourself. With all of the training videos you can easily learn without an instructor. I would not say the same for kiteboarding. I will send you a picture of an after work run that I did earlier this week. Max speed was 14.8 miles per hour on the foil I was in total control and flying above the waves.

Pricing: Been kiting a long time and one reason I've not immediately jumped over to Winging is that to get started I'd need to progress through 2 or 3 board sizes to get beyond the beginner phase. At best I'll need a 110L board, then 6 weeks later shell out another 1'000 for an 80L

I kite can get through any waves, if you have enough wind and the right direction, you just jump over the wave. I have kited for over 20 year and considering learning to wing while im out in Hood river for a few weeks. I hope that winging will add days on the water, period. If its kiting conditions i think I will still kite, nothing like boosting. You said it, there is nothing like a magical kite session. When windsurfing for years, weed could be a real bummer, having to use a weed fin, but constantly kicking off weed, i can see that weed would be a real problem on a foil. I am that guy, hard core kitesurfer, that has resisted winging, but want to at least try winging before i write it off. It looks so boring compared to kiting but I am going to give it a try. Larry

I was looking for a wing almost 10 years ago. Ordered one which never turned up (they were cool and refunded). I gave up and sold the perfect board for it, now I see the wing I was waiting for....damn. They are the future...no doubts. To explain, if you want to go fast and fly high, pull the kite out; If you want to be a hero, drop into an 8 footer half a K' off shore with a wing and ride it all the way home (no wind assist). That's what I want. Sign me up, where do I get one? Edit: sorry...just gotta add that floating through the air with a kite is fun, but doesn't feel perillas; it feels to me like floating along in a hot air balloon; kinda like driving miss Daisy.

Great video, you're both naturals as I think you didn't need a ton of preparing or hundreds of takes! Question: I only know how did windsurf, used to be quite comfortable up to winds of maybe 5 bf. Which would be easier for me to learn? Or are both a bit easier for me than a total beginner because I guess I still have some feel for water and wind etc.?

Wingfoiling definitely more similar to windsurfing.

…an here I am just wondering why it took humanity so long inventing the inflatable wing. I understand what it took to get here, but still. It makes soo much sense. I love it

My observation: wing foiling makes perfect sense when you have moderate wind & good, consistent swell or moderate waves. Kite foiling makes more sense in flat water, choppy water or light wind. Kite foiling is better for jumping & for pure speed. The more specialized foiling kites, like BRM Clouds or Flysurfer Peak4s get you pretty close to the freedom of wing foiling. In addition, wing foiling is a no brainer for surfers who want to get away from a crowded line-up. Kite skills take a long time to master, before you can even think about kite foiling, but a fir surfer can probably get up & successfully wing foil after a few sessions.

Just bought my first wing and foil board and haven’t got it out yet. The biggest issue I have here is beach break. There’s only one spot near me that I would be comfortable to get foil board of the beach, and it’s full of tourists. Whereas I can do a downwinder with a mate and theres a good chance he’s the only person I will see for 20km while playing in good empty surf. Brings up the second advantage of kites. If I have a gear/wind failure I can pack up, wrap kite and bar in the harness, surfboard under other arm then I’m walking. Still I want to try something different for the mid season, as once I’ve kited more than a few days in a week, I’m a bit over it. Maybe if I got good at the crowded spot I could take a wing out through the surf.

Friend, Maybe you can learn it in a different location, lake, flatter water location? If not, yes you can get though the shore break but it is not easy for sure it is a learning process. Kite has the advantage in that scenario no question you are spot on!

Your the man buddy. I just recently tried kiting for my first time at 40 years old got picked up 5-10 feet in the air slammed on the beach then my worthless body got dragged down the beach. When I was a bit younger it might have been way faster to heal from that but this wing foiling looks way more peaceful and less impactful. What brands are you and harry using in this video for your wings. I want to be like you and harry.

Now the price of a whole wing setup is under $2k. Just 2 years after this vid was made! I am stoked to my rig when the wind blows.

Now I do get pretty good fetch. And sometimes it is really rolling, but we never get waves as people in the ocean think of them. If we have anything like it, it's nearly gale force, and still choppy by ocean standards. So, with the wing is wind enough?

As in the intermediate level, I will go with the kitesurfing at 7 ~ 13 m2 kite wind. Above that kite size (or lighter wind) , I will go with the wing foiling. I have never tried kite foiling yet..

Great video. I just had my first kite lessons and I have to be honest with myself and admit I didn’t enjoy it. Something about the power of the kite being attached to me made me feel uncomfortable not just for myself but due to others around me. Plus the wind changes and I just didn’t like the feeling of being attached to this big powerful kite. Also, I’m looking for something I can do alone and not worry about having to land a kite. This has me very interested in pursuing kite foiling.

@@MartinDevoto66 Maybe that's another negative for kitesurfing that perhaps was overlooked in the summary: The incredible nuisance and potential danger kites often present to bystanders. So many times I've seen a kite come crashing down and narowly miss somebody who had no perception of the danger.

Most good kiters I know who took up winging now only wing. It’s weird to me because kite foiling is so much faster and allows huge jumps and I think looks better. My local spot is flat water with chunky outside tide against wind swells, and even there most people wing. Now I am only recently joining the winging party so will find out, but for my next few sessions I intend to wing just to get to a reasonable standard. On the water I would say kite foiling steals the visual show. Constantly screaming around at 20-30pmh kite foiling is not something most wingers do, maybe that’s because the winging standard generally isn’t that high. Jumping with a kite and foil seems like a different level to winging jumps. If winging had come first I definitely think everyone would be considering kiting a natural evolution - one that is faster, and generally superior, but probably only for a more select group of participants. Maybe once I have had a few more sessions I will become more pro winging vs kiting…I am fascinated to find out what I will think. My main motivation is the winging in waves bit.

I do not have an ocean, but I do have Lake Ontario. It's choppy almost always, and I can only occasionally "surf" using my paddle board. So, how will I do on a foil/wing setup?

Both winging and kiting is so awesome. Kitefoil when you want insane power, speed and flying the kite. Winging for waves, chill flat water foil sessions in light or stronger wind with friends, feeling much safer in CRAZY winds, exploring areas never thought of before and more no doubt. I love it.

One other thing driving me to winging is that you can do it, practice and Lear it anywhere there’s wind and water....Like windsurfing.... I’m working on being a miter, but I don’t live on the ocean or have access to a body of water with shallow areas and open fetch to learn or practice kiting... Learned to foil on e-foil and wake surfing behind boat....already an experienced( not expert)windsurfer...so moving to wing a natural...

Hey Damian great video as always have you done anything on managing injuries? It’s inevitable that you’re going to get injured as you do the sports or at least that’s what appears to be the case for most kiters that I know, what is your philosophy about that and how do you manage that risk and the injuries themselves.

Paul great question! I feel you live once and can't live in fear. Saying that you need to operate inside your box.. Everyone has a box and when you step outside you get hurt. If you chose your days you ride and conditions you can operate in and don't gamble with conditions that you are questioning "should I go or should I not." Your risk of injury goes way down. There is always another day to ride. I believe if you do this you truly can be injury free. Not to mention self care. Stretch and listen to your body if it feels stiff and you are questioning going out don't go, again another day! I hope that helps.

That's awesome! It's not easy to wing with a small volume board but once you can do it, then you can get away with just one board!

When i first started kiting i thought kiting would be an amzing workout, after you learn it isn't as good as I thought it would be, its tough but not what I thought it would be.

string foil, tip to tail bridle attaches to harness hook, side wings on hand handles via bridle strings , handle hooks on center string, 5-10ft wing distance allows for more wing wide and flap in effects ... you can dangle yourself under a harness and flap wings facing up or down to fly, make wing aor bird replca on frame you dangle below and use geared string to flap ...

Can I do winging on flat water? And… do I need a foil board? I live in-land. Just a shallow lake.

What you failed to talk about is how slow winging is compared to both twin tiping and kitefoiling. Also in colder conditions there is much more wind up high giving a huge advantage to kiting. People who have purchased wings in my area (Lake Huron) have been quite disappointed in how much more wind is required to wing.

If you want to get someone hooked fast by having his first ride it's the kite and a strapped surfboard. Every time I had someone struggle I pulled a surfboard and boom, 100 yards or better.

Agreed kiting means everyone needs to consider the safety of others, 60 feet around you, somewhat selfish of others.

Great video. Pls help me out to decide if I should switch to wing. Currently I kite around 5 times a session(basicly not enough) - so I am not rly comfortable in very strong winds.. I like lite wind sessions(around 12knots) with my 10m stoke and big board just cruising around..I never foiled... In general I like more light wind conditions due to the fact that my kid and wife don't need to leave a beach :D I am leaning toward wing foiling because I think that would open some new spots for me(local lakes - since seaside is far away) but I am hessitating because people say it is not doable in light wind - while on the other hand ppl say you can still go upwind even if you dont lift up on a foil... Aniway I am 75kilo and am planing to buy a 130L board and 2200foil with 5m wing(after I get used to it I would upsize wing) - to cover lightwinds.. mostly my goal is just to cruze around while my kid and wife can stay on the beach... Is that reasonable? or should I just keep my money and kite like I do :D

I think it all sounds good. Maybe think about a 6m wing as when your learning light winds are nice for sure. My thoughts you will love it. Other option is to learn to foil on the kite? Either way you will love it...

I kitefoil without issues but, I am concerned about the shoulder workout with wingfoiling. I’ve had bilateral shoulder surgery in the past.

what mast-length are you using when wing foiling the surf/waves? 80 cm/85 cm /90 cm/ 95 cm? I like Harry content. Which time is the best wind season in Florida? My best US-Friend is living in Washington DC. Is there a wing foiling/kitesurfing scene near Washington DC? I would like to get him to try either and fall in love with it, so we can go out there, together. Any input welcome!

Johnny, Great questions all depends on the conditions. Lighter winds, small waves, a short mast can be nice. It can get in the lift/energy of the waves easier. On average 70-80 but some go 90 and up in windier choppier conditions like hood river.

I dont see this as a “versus” issue but rather an “and” issue. I have been kite foiling for 4 years and it is fantastic, but i want to learn wing foiling too.

When comparing wingfoiling with other sports like windfoil and kitefoil often the arguments of convenience are brought up. I agree that wingfoiling is convenient, but for me the feeling of cruising with a kitefoil can’t be beaten.

You can friend but the board will be a lot bigger than you need for behind a jet ski, but you can for sure it will just be bigger.....

I would say compare a Wing with a Foil and Foilboard to the Kite with a kitefoil board. Lesson wise kite foiling with no experience would be tougher and take long time with lessons compared to the Wing and Foil. Kiting has a lot of self rescue and safety techniques that is imperative to learn. A beginner can pick up the wing and foil way faster. Just my opinion. No experience in a foil with a beginner will be easier than a kiter, snowboarder, windsurfer etc because they all Edge hard. Foiling doesn't really require a lot of edging.

Can you use the wing with the twintip?

The wind is those places is often not very reliable. Better to be winging when the wind dies, than kiting (swimming) 😅

I avidly windsurfed from 1985-1999, am in better shape now at 62 cuz total workout of wing foiling, (even Sup surf don’t provide same workout) do 2-3hrs at time than when I was kiting from 2000-2013…I am done with water kite but still Landboard with foil kite & wing…

Anyone Wing Foiling on the Great Lakes? Would this work for the higher frequency lake waves?
