Kitchens of the Future

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Selections from two industrial films from the 50s. First, the Frigidaire kitchen from General Motors' "Design for Dreaming," a promotional film for the 1956 Motorama. Second, a section from film coverage of the Monsanto "House of the Future," located in Tomorrowland in Disneyland. Just one word: "plastics."

One good thing about a plastic house. You'll never have to worry about keeping it up. It will take a 1000 years to decompose.

well, that actually depends on the type of plastic used... theres thousands of different recipes to make plastics. Some will breakdown in the sunlight (uv rads) in under 30 years, others will take 50 -100 years, and certainly melmac will take 1 million years! lol except if you put it in the microwave then it'll take about 30 seconds. lol

Just an FYI. Irradiated foods still very much exist. They are irradiated to kill any potentially harmful microorganisms. This is the reason why, if you've ever followed a lacto-fermentation recipe such as a naturally fermented pickle recipe, they call for non-irradiated cucumbers as irradiating them also kills any lactobacillus bacteria and naturally occurring yeasts that are essential to that process.

It's not so much the technology, but the social aspects of these videos. Would the creators have imagined a time when a woman's place WASN'T in the kitchen? The Housewives in these clips show absolute joy at being able to work a little faster, so they can lay down for a bit before the MAN comes home. None of these future predictions were looking towards the social aspects, only the technological.

@@mettatorian Actually, irradiated foods are safe. Irradiation makes meat and poultry safer by reducing the numbers of harmful bacteria and parasites. Food irradiation does not make foods radioactive, compromise nutritional quality, or noticeably change the taste, texture, or appearance of food. In fact, any changes made by irradiation are so minimal that it is not easy to tell if a food has been irradiated. Nutrient losses caused by irradiation are less than or about the same as losses caused by cooking and freezing
