    Some really helpful tips - I've never seen anyone suggest squeezing the bottle before sealing (not many brewers using plastic bottles?), but it makes so much sense!

    Actually, this has got me very confused on one thing. He refers in the video to a muslin bag, which seems to fit his 12Ltr brew kettle but his site doesn't sell a brew bag for this size. All it sells is 25ltr, 35ltr and "up to 100ltr" bags. Any idea where I find a brew bag that would fit my 14ltr stove pot? The fits all sizes bag is so huge it would dwarf my pot and probably take up half the pot without adding any grain into it at all.

    Great vid, I did one similar a few years ago, I think it is perfect for someone who wants to make beer at home but doesn't really know where to start and the results from google give so many conflicting answer.

    As an American I appreciate the enthusiasm over our style, but if you can give a suggestion for a solid English ESB, real ale, or barley wine I'm here for it! I've brewed a handful of times but this is a nice little refresher on the science behind it, keep up the good work!

    What a fun video! A 1/3 camden tablet and a drop of lactic acid would make a huge improvement in taste for those brewing in the UK! Also 1/5 of the packet of yeast is enough, I used keep a tally written on the packet.

    I think the campden tablet is for the Chlorine, but what does the lactic acid do? Does that help with the ph for the mash?

    It’s used to remove the alkalinity from the water. You can also use AMS in a similar fashion

    @@themaltmiller8438 I believe AMS can't get adjust sparge water Ph low enough to avoid astringency. It's designed to work with grains to reach mash Ph for optimal enzyme activity.

    Really helpful video, thanks! First time brewing one of your kits and I’ve started with Hoppy Boi. The instructions for that don’t mention priming sugar when bottling but based on this video (and experience) I assume that’s still needed?

    Yep have a GF30 used it once last year, takes too long and ended up using extract kits instead. Tempted to sell the GF and just brew small batches like this. I can’t consume 23 litres of beer 😢 Just ordered the Cali Common to try 👍

    Two things that I think would help. 1) you could use a colander over the kettle and place the grain bag over it so it can drip back into the kettle if you have one that is a similar size. 2) I think for a small batch like this if people like brewing you should have small keg as the fermenter over a plastic bucket because if they like the hobby a small keg is more future proof and who doesn't like tap beer over bottling.

    Thanks, Ben. Yes a colander is a great option as you said. You certainly can use a small keg if you wish, we wanted to offer a solution that is approachable in terms of pricing for gifts etc...     @@themaltmiller8438 You are permanently out of stock of the fermenter king junior, any idae when you are getting new ones in? Also, a video on how to use it would be helpful if you do. I am currently stuck with using bottles in bomb proof plastic containers because the C02 gas things terrify me.

    No we didn’t on these brews. The cylindrical airlocks don’t tend to be as bad for that as the standard ones we found

    I'm really looking to get back into brewing after a LONG lay off and have done small batch all grain before, really interested in the package you guys are doing and been looking through the kit instructions to try and re-familiarise myself with the process!! One question- do you not need to sparge at all with these kits? Could you for eg mash in 7L of water then sparge with 2? Or won't it matter? Cheers!!

    We’ve designed them so that you don’t have to sparge, you can if you wish but I’m out trials on these kits (and some full size BIAB kits) we’ve not had any issues at all doing things this way around

    Can I use a demijohn instead of a 5 litre bucket? I recon it’ll hold 4 litres water with room for fermentation. Can I start with 8 litres water for the wort? I have a siphon to get the beer out after fermentation, so everything else is fine.

    Yes that would work, you might need to adjust your volumes to reflect this but no reason to not use one

    How did you manage to get 10 bottles out of the fermenter? From my Pallisade brew following the instructions exactly I only got just over 8?

    Everyone’s going to get slightly different amounts. We brimmed the fermenter as much as we could and got as much out as we could without getting any of the cake at the bottom into the bottles. Some of the kits you will get bang on 10 and others you might get slightly less, depending on things like dry hop amounts etc… our advice would be to work on getting the most from your mash first so you can then extract more from the grain (stirring and temp control for example) and then get as much as you can into the FV but as with all brews, sometimes you’ll get more and sometimes less! Hope the beer turns out well for you! Make sure to let it have a good amount of time to condition 👍🏻🍻

    You mention heating to 66c. I've seen people say to make the strike water hotter (70c) to allow for the grain changing the temperature when it hits the water. Is that something worth doing or no need? Thanks

    You can heat to a few degrees higher, yes. The reason being that when you add the grain the temperature differential will cause a drop in the mash overall temperature. However on this size of batch you can find that it will be very fast to heat up the mash back to the desired temperature using your stove, juts due to the size of the volume being brewed.

    Just purchased the Cali Common do I need 9 litres of water for mash for this? My calcs are coming in around 8 litres.

    The guidelines are generic based on our experience and equipment/boil off rates. If you know 8l will work for you the go for it 👍🏻 You can always add liquor back in if it comes up short/overshoots your gravity

    Agree totally with previous comment. I've been eyeing this 12LTR boil kettle. Perfect for my needs -- 5LTR batch is a sweet spot for me. Tak questions: * Id like the bag to be bit bigger so it can be wrapped around the kettle. * Does the fermentor have enough headspace to accomodate a vigorous fermentation/krausen? I'm based in Mumbai (though currently work in Kuala Lumpur). Do you ship to Mumbai?

    If you have a large bag that flops over the sides too much and you use gas, you can melt the bag so just watch out for that.

    We’ve been fairly generic with the water volumes to make it super approachable for everyone who starts with these kits. When we’ve brewed them we found you loose apx 1.5lt to grain absorption and hops in the boil and then about 1lt in boil off when on a high rolling boil on the hob. Then we wanted to allow a little extra for people to maximise their amount going into the FV. You could go more specific if you wanted or have a longer boil to boil off more, totally up to the brewer 👍🏻

    We've opted for a simple process with these stove top kits, if folks want to sparge they can adjust the amount of mash water but in our experience brewing these kits, it's not really needed.

    Yes, but it will depend on the activity of your fermentation. It is always a good idea to sit these smaller FV's or FV's which are fuller into a trug of tray for safe keeping, just incase of a very active fermentation!
