    Tip for watchers: It's usually better to make difficult changes (like removing aquilae and purity seals) before assembly so you don't have to worry about: • not being able to reach a spot • accidentally breaking something • removing too much and needing to repair in the same difficult circumstances

    Very funny for me to get this in my recommendations when I've been doing something kinda like this - I had some Cataphractii sitting around alongside three Indomitus terminators and I just kinda went "Fuck it, let's see how these look combined!" And man, Cataphractii arms look *great* on the Indomitus body. Very big, imposing figure. Also managed to fit some spare Possessed bits on, since I'm kitbashing a homebrew Chaos/renegade warband that leans pretty far into that sorta thing.

    I recently took one of the deathwing Knight terminators that are the miniature of the month and converted it into a loyalist iron warrior from one of the alternative heresies because that means I still get to play iron warriors but I don't have to paint up all the nasty little trim that comes on so many chaos models and because of rules I can play them as chaos or loyalist I just have to still use the chaos rules for the gameplay and I had to get rid of a bunch of details like the Crux terminatus and the dark Angels chest symbol thankfully I was able to use the power sword arm and my brother was nice enough to let me get a storm bolter arm for the left arm instead so I didn't have to use the big shield and I can use that for when I work on my grey Knight kaldor Draigo equivalent for my Homebrew 11th legion the war foxes using customized grey knights that I still have to play with grey Knight rules and they have the Mecca wolf heads from the space wolves for the Horus heresy upgrade kit and I have to make some epoxy putty fox tails for every single member of the army because like how the black dragons grow bones out of their bodies that sometimes can be used as weapons the war foxes literally have a extended tailbone that look like a Fox's tail and thankfully I only have to make like five or six different designs for the position of the tale and I can use some blue stuff to make copies of them so I don't have to sculpt like 40 tails and I can use the blue stuff to copy the fox wolf heads as well although my brother did find a file for them that he printed out for his space wolves so he can always print out more heads for me as well

    For anyone trying to criticise the dull knife. he is using it in a manner which is very controlled and positioned so it cannot hit his finger. midwinterminis has a video explaining it. many kitbashers and professionals use dull scalpels. the issue you're talking about happens when someone uses a dull knife THINKING that the knife is sharp. that's when accidents happen

  • @AnotherDayMiniatures

    @AnotherDayMiniatures

    3 ай бұрын

    I believe criticism is very healthy, and in this situation, it has brought up some excellent points. However, there seems to have been a significant misunderstanding regarding the term 'dull.' I hoped that mentioning the butter knife part would reinforce the idea. The edge has been sanded smooth; it can't really cut. It works with plastic mainly because plastic is a stronger material, allowing the 'knife' to work its way in. Similarly, you can technically scrape miniature plastic with a spoon (I have tried this before). Using a sharp one so close to your fingers, not to mention I sometimes just grab the blade, would indeed 'end badly,' as I mentioned.

    Telling people to use a dull hobby knife is really bad advice. Blades are more likely to slip and cut the user when dull. Statistically a sharp knife is safer.

  • @danforthlaertes

    @danforthlaertes

    3 ай бұрын

    I came here to say exactly that. A sharp knife and attention is better than a dull knife. Plastic is tougher than your skin - whatever force you are applying to cut plastic (with a knife of whatever sharpness) WILL cut your skin. The more force you apply, the less control you have and the more likely something is to suddenly "give" and send a blade going where it shouldn't. Sharp knife requires very little pressure and means you have total control.

    Went down here to comment the exact same thing. A dull blade is waaaaves more dangerous then a sharp one. I'm only ever cut myself on older blades. I also cut towards myself and I know it's taboo but i couldn't care less lol. We have more muscles in our wrists and arms to control cutting towards ourselves than away; you gain more control (this part isn't directed to you, just I'm just yapping).

  • @danforthlaertes

    @danforthlaertes

    3 ай бұрын

    @@tomfrommicromanagement9716Yep - the whole idea of "cutting away" is a simplistic one I wouldn't recommend. One should cut so the natural movement of the knife DOES NOT intersect with any part of yourself (or anything else you don't want to cut!) but cutting away from yourself sometimes means you have a lot less control. Using both hands and a VERY sharp blade and bracing everything carefully means you can have a lot of control.

  • @AnotherDayMiniatures

    It seems that this is definitely a topic with a wide range of experiences. I think I should have made it clearer that I was addressing the issue of the blade being entirely dull, especially in the specific way I used it in the video. Using a sharp knife is entirely valid, but I would never use one in the same way as demonstrated. I would avoid making so many cuts towards myself, not to mention keeping my fingers well clear of the blade. I have used sharp blades before, and indeed, as they became duller, they would become more unpredictable. However, in my specific instance, it's well past the point of having the ability to make a cut. I do believe that using well-sharpened knives is way better when it comes to cooking.

    I just have to say, a dull blade is more dangerous than a sharp one. More pressure has to be exerted to get the same result as a sharp one, and no matter if you cut towards yourself or away; there is a major risk of hurting yourself.

    It is something I follow myself when it comes to cooking. However, I did find that when it comes to minis, using one of those when they are sharp often resulted in injury. The one I use is more or less entirely dull, and as a result, it can't cut. It definitely felt more important to address my knife being incredibly dull-enough to hold firmly with two fingers. The way I was using it in the video would probably be incredibly unsafe with a sharp one. If you find that a sharp one works better, it's entirely valid. I think it's definitely a scenario where different uses and approaches can work. However, I would also use it entirely differently if that knife had any sharpness.

    I do think that's 100% true and something I practice with kitchen knives. However, with plastic, I've personally found it to be a different situation. I hoped that mentioning the part about the butter knife would reinforce the idea of it being 'Dull'. The edge has been sanded smooth; it can't really cut. It works with plastic mainly because plastic is a stronger material, allowing the 'edge' to work its way in.

    sorry dont wanna be the "akchually" guy but it safer to use sharper blades rather than dull ones..with sharp ones u need minimal force so u have a lot more precise control while dulls may need to be used quite hardly and when u get cut the sharp will leave a more even, cleaner cut which can heal better, while dull blades cause more tissue damage and might leave tiny chunks of dirt or plastic due to the roll and nicks in the blade in your body, raising the chance of an infection...source: trust me im a cook

  • @AnotherDayMiniatures

    It's absolutely valid, and not at all an "akchually" moment. I definitely agree that it's safer to use sharp knives instead of poorly sharpened ones, I personally practice that with my kitchen knives. However the one I use for my hobby is literally dull, its been sanded smooth. That's why I feel so comfortable holding it with both fingers. Plastic does have a tendency to 'grip' the blade, as you described, especially if it's not smooth or is poorly sharpened. The blade has more ridges for the plastic to catch on and get trapped. Miniature plastic is smooth enough that you can literally scrape details off with a spoon (not joking). Personally I found that using something much thinner than a spoon, while still dull, has great results while almost eliminating the risk of injury.
