Kit Review - Tamiya 35209 Pz IV H Early Part 1

This is my first crack at doing a full kit review! In Part 1 I take a detailed at the instructions, and talk about how I plan to build this kit to represent a real Pz IV that fought at Arnhem during Operation Market Garden. In part 2 I'll look at the sprues... Thanks for watching!

Looks like a very nice kit. I was just looking at one on the shelf in the local hobby shop today, and figured I'd get more info here. Will probably buy it.

It’s a fun kit. Not the most accurate ever, but goes together nicely. Good luck if you decide to buy it.

I believe the Tristar running gear set was too narrow, only for 38 cm wide tracks.

Bruce, this early PZ IV H was produced only in the month of May 1943, a year and a half before the Battle of the Bulge. The latest-serving early Pz IV H I’m aware of served in Arnhem in September 1944. It’s possible that one survived long enough to serve in the Ardennes, but I would say it is unlikely. A late-version Pz IV H would be possible, but the most likely Pz IV in that battle would be a Pz IV J.

Unfortunately Tamiya’s Pz IV J kit (35181) has some issues. It portrays an early Pz IV J, but doesn’t include zimmerit, so if you wanted to be historically-accurate you’d need to add your own zimmerit or find after-market zimmerit for that kit. If you wanted a Pz IV J built after zimmerit was discontinued (Sep 1944), you would need a J with the later-style exhausts (two vertical exhaust pipes instead of the single horizontal muffler provided in this kit). That makes Tamiya not a great choice if you’re looking for historical accuracy. The only kits that will provide something more historically-accurate are from Dragon. Not sure if you’ve build Dragon kits in the past, but Dragon’s can be a lot more complicated than Tamiya (and their instructions can be somewhat confusing). Kit 6556 builds a mid-production Pz IV J, built in the narrow period after zimmerit was ceased while the Pz IV’s spaced armour (shurzen) was transitioning from the solid metal plates to a wire mesh. Dragon 6575 has the later mesh shurzen, and both have the correct J exhausts. I’d recommend doing some research on which German unit you’re looking to portray, and then check which unit decals come with each kit on Scalemates.com. You might have to go looking for some after-market decals if neither kit has decals for a unit that fought in the Ardennes. Hope that helps.

Bruce Robinson a Normandy diorama would be good for a Pz IV H mid or late production, and 12 SS fought there, although they fought in the Canadian/British sectors, not the US sectors. A Tiger I late would be perfect for a Normandy diorama or a Bulge diorama, as they were used in both battles. All Tigers had twin vertical exhausts BTW, while the Pz IV started the war with the horizontal muffler and switched to the two vertical exhausts in August 1944 with the J model.
