Kit Review: Tamiya 25175 M4A3E8 Sherman "Easy Eight" in 1/35

Here is my review of Tamiya's rebox of the Tasca/Asuka Easy Eight. It looks to be a very nice kit, although I would compare the molding quality more towards Tamiya than Dragon. Can be a bit soft at time, but looks far more detailed than the new Tamiya E8 kit.
My first exposure to Tasca and my first American subject on the channel. Very impressed.

There is a new Tamiya "Easy Eight" which is new tool Tamiya: totally different from Tasca rebox. Tamiya is making terrific kits now, and have some very neat ones out in the last two years: SU-76, M-10, Panther G (individual links available for extra) Jagdpanzer IV, Archer, Valentine. All splendido kits and will weigh in at less than 250 parts. Tamiya engineering is excellent now, and a lot of detail that you didn't see on their "classics" from the 70s-80s just because the engineering is so much better. Most go for under $40 at Scale Hobbyist. (The SU-76 is needed - the second most produced Soviet AFV: three years back Tamiya did a very sweet BT-7 and that's the chasis used for the SU-76. I think it would be very hard to find the Tasca/Tamiya. (Not knocking Tasca: have three in my stash and they look great.)

My first kit getting into this hobby was the newest Tamiya M4A3E8 (35346) but I wanted this one. Great to see you doing some allied armor but don't lose your love of German armor too soon because you got me into them! ;)

I love German stuff the most. But as I said in there I am slowly coming around to allied stuff. I've always loevd British tanks, but there just aren't the same quality of kits out there. I'm sure I'll do some AFV Club Churchill tanks and a Cromwell on here at some point.

you know I'm not a tank guy, but eventually I want to build a Sherman and so this kit has interested me for a while. Really effective presentation. Good close-up shots of the details and even though you went through all the steps in the instructions somehow you kept it from being boring. Good job.

Thanks Will. I was actually conscious of the pacing in the edit. Even I get bored with my reviews so I wanted to try and keep the pace tolerable. As far as the kit, it's a pretty beefy version of a Sherman, so I don't think you could go wrong. with it.

Cool review I do not have this kit, but I have the asuka , M4A3E8 thunderbolt VII , track links are T66 seperate , they appear to be snap, workable , glue the guide horns . Great detail, great kits, They do not have plastic grab handles for hatches, which is a bummer. Any reviews of Kaizen coming? Anyway cool review Adam Thank you Cheers. The texture needs a little Mr. Surfacer 500 for texture. But it is very crisp and great cast Mark's and details

Cools pretty awesome! I've been looking for this kit or the Asuka/Tasca equivalents for a while; it seems quite nice. Tasca's Shermans are supposed to be the best...course I've still got that Dragon M4A2 I'm going to make Russian. I'd never seen a review of this one though so thank you for this. Tracks seem okay to me; better than rubber ones, but Kaizen's look better. Guess that's why you'd buy them lol. Again, cool stuff and thanks for the video :)

The fit of the hull tub is pretty close to perfect with one exception. In step 4, omit part J13. It isn't visible and it can make joining the hull and transmission cover very tricky. The tracks are workable, but I had a really hard time with them constantly falling apart. I dislike rubber band tracks (shame on Dragon for abandoning magic track) but I found myself wishing for the two part band tracks because these were so frustrating.

Ok thank you. Those are pretty much my only unknowns with this kit. Those Kaizen T-84s are even more fiddly than the T60 in this kit, but I'm a glutton for workable plastic track punishment. But I've been where you're talking about. When I review these Rye Field Tiger kits with their Modelkasten style tracks it just becomes exhausting. Then I long for band tracks. But after workables are done, if they work right they're awesome.

Tasca/Asuka's Sherman kits are the best on the market, but also the most expensive. I have several of their kits in the stash and I'm always looking for more Tasca Sherman kits. Always a good buy. As for reference, I highly recommend the Son of Sherman book. It is the best reference for all things Sherman.

Did you get it from the cheaper Amazon book sellers? I saw a couple that were advertising it for under $70. Be prepared to waste a lot of time when it arrives. I think this book when combined with the Squadron Sherman in Action books will give you everything you want to know about Sherman tanks.

i only made one tasca kit, which was the PII L and i consider it to be one of the most fun kits in existance. this one does not look shabby either. not sure about the polished textureless hull and the tedious looking tracks.

The tracks I'll be using are even more tedious. But as to the kit, apart from that super smooth surface it does look good. Maybe I'll try that Panzer II at some point.

I don’t know if you’re still on your American armor kick but check out the M26 by far the coolest American tank of WW2 and the Tamiya M26 with the 90 mm and long barrel is in my opinion the coolest of all American armor.

I was going to use either this or the new Tamiya M4A3E8 to make a replica of Fury as it was seen at the end of the film. I would've used a resin upgrade kit to mimic Fury, but resin's always given me lots of trouble - paint/primer/varnish won't stick to it well, chips, dries a different colour than when applied to polystyrene, etcetera. However, given _Fury_'s connection with Wargaming, and Wargaming's connection to Italeri, I figured eventually make a Fury model with all the accessories made of polystyrene. Now that they do, and it's only $35 - I feel like I should get the Italeri one.

  • @RandomCanEHdian

    @RandomCanEHdian

Also, I noticed Fury has T84 tracks, which are post-war. I think I'd still build the model with them, because I'm mimicking the film, not realism.

That's right, they were tested in early 45 and so I've read saw limited use as spares in Germany the last month of the war. Although I can't find a photograph of that. I'll use them as I got the kit to see how well they worked, and they do look very cool.

I seem to recall that it was Andy who was being attacked by other reviewers. Several of them suggested that he couldn't do a fair review of any model kit because he also sells them for a living, which I don't think is right. I've learned a great deal from many reviewers. Adam certainly knows his German armor and is a good source for information on it.
