Kishorn Port Time Lapse

The Dry Dock has been dried out for several weeks now and is looking good. Time lapse footage was filmed during the process of refurbishment and pumping out.

Was there few times early 70's when was probably 3-4yrs old with my old man (Jimmy Aird) was driving a Volvo F86 for Ord Transport delivering building timber ~ I'd happily sit & watch in awe the steady stream of massive quarry dump trucks spiralling around edge of that (hole) dry dock ‹(•¿•)›

The drydock and rig were a huge achievement back in the 1970s. Sadly, many many of the area's beautiful drystone bridges over burns (streams) were destroyed by lorries too big for the narrow roads.

What you are looking at is a huge dry dock constructed in 1975 as a location for building the largest oil rig installations to be used on the then new North Sea oilfields off the east coast of Scotland. The dock is located on Loch Kishorn, a sea loch on the west coast of Scotland just north of the Isle of Skye, which has a natural depth of 80m (260ft). In 1978 it built the Ninian Central Platform, which at the time was the largest movable object constructed by man (and may still be). The yard closed in 1987 having fulfilled its purpose, but was briefly reopened in 1992 to build the bridge footings for the Skye Bridge. Until the events of this video, it had not been drained and the caissons that close it from the sea had not been moved for 25 years. The new owners think that it can be brought back to life and used for a number of purposes, including providing an environmentally friendly way of dismantling large ships and other floating structure. This was a test to see if it was still intact and fit for purpose. There is another video (search for 'The Sleeping Giant Awakes') that shows its first use, to dismantle a large bulk carrier.

A test to see if a vast dry dock that has been dead for over 25 years can be brought back to life. See my previous comment.
