Utah LDS here. I've really enjoyed your talk on the Community of Christ and the restoration movement. I want to give you my opinion on the acquisition of the Kirkland temple. As i do i hope not to offend you or your subscribers. The pre-martrydom LDS church was to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ to the world. This has never changed in the LDS (Mormon) Church as many people around the globe have accepted it. The Kirkland temple is key in that restoration because it was there that Joseph Smith was visited by Jesus Christ and Prophets to receive priesthood keys. References of this are found in our Doctrine and Covenants and miscellaneous teachings of Joseph Smith and his successors. When i state this next item, i do it with the assumption that the tour guides of the Community of Christ have not pointed this out in the Kirtland temple. With the acquisition of the temple, LDS missionaries who will now be conducting tours will be pointing this out. So, the Kirtland temple now becomes a vehicle to spread the message of the restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ. I know we are poles apart with our beliefs, so i don't expect you to believe this, but this is how i see it. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of this conversation.

I am in agreement with your assessment neutral Doug. It's neither good nor bad as far as meaning much in the effort up build God's kingdom on earth. As a person raised in the LDS Church, recently separated, my heart broke at i saw the response of current LDS members that very much appeared to view this handful of purchases as fulfillment of prophecy and proof that their church was in deed the "most true" church of the restoration, and that these buildings are added to their long list of idols in the church. These new purchases inspired members to share Depictions of rapture and excitement that somehow this meant that the return of Christ is more imminent than ever. It seems that this stripping of idols from the RLDS might have only shifted them to the LDS and sucked then deeper in. I pray they for them

I heard the LDS church is trying to buy the Temple Lot in Missouri. Do you know anything about it?

Has there ever been a time when the LDS or RLDS wasn't trying to purchase the temple lot in Independence?

I agree Doug! I’ve thought for years that the priesthood going to Kirtland every year was a waste of time and I’ve questioned every message that’s been given there for years…too many generalities in these messages for me!

Excellent point and I agree so much all people for God and the worship of men go away people are so afraid and just follow without thought ! If they were born in Rome they would be catholic!!

Thank you sir for the information, insight and your "neutral" view, which I also prefer. Most that I saw on here were either very pro or against this purchase. Hmm... Why would someone be offended by anything you said? I sure didn't see any reason for it.

That would include dumping the false teachings/doctrines of Mormonism. Regarding the Kirtland Temple. It'll make a great site for yard sales. I left the LDS church for the Biblical Jesus. He doesn't like being contradicted by Joseph Smith.

Amen. My first reaction was, “It’s just a building.” I mean, I realize it’s not just a building to a lot of people, and I feel it’s historically significant. But it’s still just a building that will probably crumble to the ground one day. I am not fond of the LDS church having such a huge treasure trove of restoration history, but some good may come of it. I hope they will make the documents available to view online like they’ve done with many in the Joseph Smith Papers Project. As for the building-I just hope they maintain it as a historical building and don’t try to give it any upgrades. At least we know they’ve got enough money to take good care of it lol

This feels like a dying movement as a whole, not simply in the case of the independent restoration branches. The LDS Church purchasing the Kirtland Temple is like having it loaded onto a sinking vessel. The question is what are we going to do about all of this? Certainly I can see your point in regards to idolatry, but this is still nonetheless OUR history, not just the history of the Utah church. That history matters.

Good sir , when you say our history to what are you referring? It is our history who built the Kirtland temple? For what purpose? Why didn't the original builders stay and continue to use what they sacrificed blood, sweat, & tears, for financially, physically , emotionally. Guess what they were persecuted , killed driven out their leader murdered. So when you say our History. Your worrying about the damper of the temple not getting rented out once a year and the loss of funding to keep open to the public their historical tours your history made it that it was a religious building covenant to the Lord almighty and still would have been so had your history not changed the course of that Utah church's history 😢. So again what is your history? Taking over something that was not theirs in the first place? Capitalizing on the tragedies of the original Utah church sounds very selfish. To me it's a reunification of what it once was and now that it's back in the hands of the Utah church it will continue to be shared with out charge to the public for all to enjoy. That's our history.

@@ronmanuela9448 It belongs to no one specific branch of the restoration movement. It is collectively ours. The authority claims of the Utah church are no more or less convincing than any other, regardless of what they believe. That is the tragedy. Brigham Young holds no monopoly on this restoration.
