Kirtland, OH - "BACKLESS" FS 2001-SRN - Full Alert - 7/8/20

Ғылым және технология

UPDATE: A back cover has been put back on the siren. Visually confirmed 3/2021
Basic Information:
Siren: Federal Signal 2001-SRN
Town: Kirtland, OH (Lake County)
System: Lake/Perry Nuclear Siren System (Can be set off by the plant and the county)
Location: Kirtland Speedway (OH-306 south of I-90)
Tested: Quarterly on the 2nd Wednesday of the month at 11:00 AM (January, April, July, & October)
Uses: Tornado/Nuclear Siren
Cycle: Full Alert (Does 3x Full Alerts for an emergency at Perry Nuclear)
Other Notes:
Well this was a last second decision. For Perry test today, I had my eyes set on the downtown Painesville Equinox, which you can get a really cool shot of the Lake County Courthouse in the background, and an old 3016 (Part of Perry's former system) as well. I got a message from Burns last night, and said he was going to be filming the backless SRN in Lake County. I was hesitant at first for joining him, but I decided that I should record it now, instead of waiting and potentially risk having it not work anymore. Unfortunately this morning he said he'd be unable to record this unit. I didn't know if I should back down, and go to the Equinox, or risk this. After an hour of debating, I settled on this, just because when will you ever find a perfectly healthy 2001 WITHOUT the back cover! It's been missing for over a year, and presumably fell of in the Spring of 2019, as May 2019 Streetview, the cover is missing, but in October 2018 Streetview, it's still on. When I saw that it was missing for over a year, I was a little nervous it wouldn't work. To be quite honest, I was expecting to hear a bunch of 2001s in the distance. To my surprise shortly after 11AM, this thing fires up. I can and can't say I'm surprised that it's louder than any other SRN that I've recorded, because it can get so much more air. When I first discovered the back was missing in February 2020, I contacted EMA via Facebook, but they never saw my message, so I'll send an Email to them. I checked all over and couldn't find the cover. It wouldn't surprise me if someone took it, as it's in a little bit of a shady area (Not the city, but that gas station and motel it's next to). This video would've been perfect if the exposed back was facing the camera during the wind down, but fortunately I took the clip of it winding down from my BTS and put it in here. Overall this was a really cool test, and I think it's safe to say that I've recorded the first fully functional 2001 siren without the back on. Enjoy!

Hello, Thanks for posting this video of my siren. I am the Lake County Telecommunications Sr. Radio Technician responsible for maintaining this one along with the 49 others in the West side of Lake County. I already put in a call to have the back/top ordered so I can get a bucket truck and replace it since it cannot be found. I walked the entire area and could not find it. I guess some scrapper took it to the scrap yard and got a quarter for it.

@@sirensofneohio3979 That's unique! I don't think any 2001 model or unit ever had their back panels off and the back showing before, it took me long enough to find the inner workings of Thunderbolts with the different blowers and with our without Solenoids. But I've searched KZread including channels of users who own them and couldn't find any videos of them taking one apart that needed maintenence for how newer and modern the 2001s are compared to the Thunderbolts from the mid 1900s. There's people who've taken apart Whelens on this darn platform! But I've never seen the back workings of any 2001 unit. That's what makes this video a great catch overall! Because of how rare it is to find videos like this.

Has a replacement back panel been found for this siren and if not why not go with a higher decibel 2001-130 which comes already sealed at all ends and I thought all generations of 2001s came with factory sealed motors so stuff like this does not happen although it is very cool to see the inner workings of a 2001 in action during a test you don't get to see that often

I always thought the 2001 had an interesting design with the chopper drawing air through the back box with its motor housed within the "nose". That has to be a real stiff box side to be able to cantilever a chopper, stator, and motor from it! From another video of a privately-owned 2001, the chopper looks very similar to that of my Model 5. Does anyone know if the chopper is the same size? Without the cover I'd think the rotator guts would be swimming all the time! LOL
