Kirsty MacColl - A New England
Музыка
A New England was a Top Ten single for Kirsty MacColl in 1985. Billy Bragg wrote a couple of extra verses for the song just for Kirsty.

When great lyrics were still a thing
I'm a 16 year old girl. I've loved kirsty for as long as I can remember. Her legacy will never die xxx
Might be the greatest line in popular music - 'when at last it didn't ring I knew it wasn't you....'
I’m 60 year old man an still get a tearful every time I watch Kirsty’s videos. She was what I would have called a “pub girl” back in the day. These were the girls you could have a pint and a laugh with while kind of wishing that perhaps they could be more. Luckily I married one, I’m a lucky fella but still miss this girl

Kirsty MacColl died prematurely in December 2000 (age 41), she was killed in a boat accident in Mexico. She pushed one of her sons away from the boat, but she got hit and killed by it. In my opinion, Kirsty died a hero.

A phenomenal song from the get go, but where she takes this from 2:00 on is GLORIOUS. That's not a choir of voices, but her own backing vocals, multitracked and layered. It just kicks into the stratosphere. Take every chance I get to celebrate this fantastic music and Kirsty's amazing body of work.

@@salmonesque- Are you sure? The guitar credit on this record is conspicuously missing and stylistically it contains many of Johnny's hallmarks. @salmonesque

You know more about him than me but as a guitar player I'd bet my tele that he did not play on that track. I just don't think he has the musicality to have played those lines. I know that this is not in keeping with the reverence in which he's held but I don't think he could've come up with those parts. I researched track credits and it mentions a couple of guitarists but nowhere does it credit Marr so, I'm fairly sure. Tbc, I do think he is a singularly brilliant stylised guitarist who has come up with some incredible guitar lines and playing on classic tracks. Through interviews with him I have decided that no one loves Johnny Marr more than Johnny Marr though. @@joehoy9242

This was one of the songs I ran to the radio for in the 1980's......a fresh breath of air in the (What I then considered , my taste has become milder since the last twenty years) polluted smoke of synthpop. I can still get a kick out of this song and am just jamming along with my newly acquired electric 12 string. Still get goosebumps. Don't know why, the lyrics don't apply to me but it is the overall atmosphere of youth and exciting music that speaks to me still, How sadly Kirsty may have met her end, in her musical inheritance and in her vids she at least doesn't age.Very thankful for the fact I can still enjoy it with modern technology.

I was twenty-one years when I wrote this song I'm twenty-two now, but I won't be for long People ask me when will I grow up to understand Why the girls I knew at school are already pushing prams I loved you then as I love you still Though I put you on a pedestal, you put me on the pill I don't feel bad about letting you go I just feel sad about letting you know I don't want to change the world I'm not looking for a new England Are you looking for another girl? I don't want to change the world I'm not looking for a new England Are you looking for another girl? I loved the words you wrote to me But that was bloody yesterday I can't survive on what you send Every time you need a friend I saw two shooting stars last night I wished on them, but they were only satellites It's wrong to wish on space hardware I wish, I wish, I wish you'd care I don't want to change the world I'm not looking for a new England Are you looking for another girl? I don't want to change the world I'm not looking for a new England Are you looking for another girl? My dreams were full of strange ideas My mind was set despite the fears But other things got in the way I never asked that boy to stay Once upon a time at home I sat beside the telephone Waiting for someone to pull me through When at last it didn't ring, I knew it wasn't you I don't want to change the world I'm not looking for a new England Are you looking for another girl? I don't want to change the world I'm not looking for a new England Are you looking for another? I don't want to change the world I'm not looking for a new England Are you looking for another girl? Looking for another girl Looking for another girl Looking for another girl Girl, girl, girl
Still makes me smile this song. Clever, clever lyrics
Exactly 15 years since she died. Time flies. Taken far too young RIP

Kirsty fabulous artist, still sadly missed, this song reminds me of my younger days xxxx
Billy Bragg has Paul Simon to thank for his opening lines to this song ,from 'Leaves that are Green'.Great expansion thereafter.Astonishingly good song and flawless cover by Kirsty
Such a relatable song for me, being 22 myself, and knowing a few girls I knew at school who are indeed pushing prams, and pondering what happened to all the people I knew, what paths they took in life, and maybe I should’ve asked a girl to stay, and and so many other things about these lyrics that Kirsty brings so beautifully to life with that melancholy jangly new wave sound.
As a massive metal fan, this is one of my favourite tunes

Thank you for sharing this timeless classic. May it continue to inspire and uplift listeners around the world.
I've just discovered this and am so totally blown away, I'm going to rave about it to all my friends. What a tragedy that she's gone.
Kirsty McColl always sounds great no matter what she sings. RIP.
Kirsty died saving the life of the boy she was pregnant with when this was filmed. A mother to be proud of.
