Tarsus' Kırkkaşık Bedesteni, located right next to the Ulu Mosque in the city center, is one of the most important structures of Tarsus, which has been a vibrant commercial and cultural hub at the intersection of cultures throughout its history.
Built in 1579 by İbrahim Bey, the son of Piri Paşa from the Ramazanoğlu Principality, Kırkkaşık Bedesteni was initially used as an imaret (soup kitchen) and madrasah. Constructed entirely of cut stone, the bedesten features five domes. The rectangular-shaped bedesten is accessed through vaulted doors on the east, west, and north sides.
Known by different names over time, the Kırkkaşık Bedesteni was called the "White Bazaar" for many years. After restoration work in the 1960s, it was used as the Covered Bazaar (Kapalıçarşı) following the opening of the eastern gate. The municipality of Tarsus undertook the restoration of the bedesten, which earned it the "Project Competition Award" from the Union of Historical Towns.
Over the centuries, Kırkkaşık Bedesteni has served various cultures and has become a bustling tourist attraction today. It houses shops selling regional handicrafts, such as ceramics, woodwork, copperware, silverware, leather goods, and textiles. Additionally, there are restaurants serving traditional Tarsus cuisine and cafes offering Tarsus-style Turkish coffee (Tarsusi), making it a lively destination favored by tourists.
