Kirkbride Abandoned Asylum - One Half of Buffalo's Richardson Hotel

Before the possibilities of modern medicine, Americans suffering from mental illness were often relegated to county jails, private homes, or the dark basements of public buildings. But with the efforts of Dorothea Dix - an 18th-century advocate and lobbyist for the treatment of the mentally ill - state mental hospitals were established to care for these unfortunate individuals.
The Kirkbride Plan became the architectural response for these institutions. Philadelphia psychiatrist Thomas Kirkbride established this plan with a design that would increase open spaces, sunlight, and air ventilation. His proposal aimed to maximize the latest advances in psychiatry, philosophy, and architecture.
By the mid 20th century, medical advances and the high cost of maintaining such structures saw them fall into disuse, and, in some cases, become abandoned or demolished. One surviving Kirkbride, now partially renovated as the new Richardson Hotel, is the focus of this episode.

I know of Sigur Ros by name but I’ve never heard their music. My inspirations was the space somewhere between Pink Floyd, Jeff Beck, the original Death Wish soundtrack, and The X-Files.

@@chrisluckhardtI remember my mom taking me and my grandmother there to visit him when I was about 5-6 years old. (She really should NOT have taken me up there, but did because either no sitter or whatever). I have such strong memories of how bad it smelled (like urine and stale feces), all the yelling, and the men half dressed wandering the halls stopping to touch me on the head. I don’t think I would ever be able to visit that new “hotel” now after all of that.

The bulb burned out in my white light so I had to use my red light. I have the red light because it’s better for night vision. It isn’t great for video but it’s all I had at the time.
