Kirk Whalum Special Edition Saxophone Neck by P.Mauriat
Музыка
I literally couldn't believe it when I put this neck on after having played a 66RUL with the standard neck. The instrument TRANSFORMED into something else! I've never experienced a neck doing this before. The immediate extra power, richness, brightness, and free-blowing qualities were simply extraordinary.

So it’s just a silver plated Super VI neck with some bracing added?
I have watched as many neck related videos as I can find on KZread and there are sometime noticeable differences that to varying degrees I can or think I can hear. Some others really don't show any sound difference at all. This video shows quite a stark contrast without having to listen too hard. So scaling that upward to better reproduction than my laptop speakers, hearing it live and ultimately playing it must be quite significant with this neck. It sounds great even on my laptop.
Jim, you present a very clear difference between these two. I hardly care about the aesthetics, I don’t see the value in that aspect, but the silver neck seems like it gives the player more control. Everything about it says “more”, so to me they were successful. Great video.

Many thanks
Sounds great!. What MP are you playing on?
Another great review! Could you guys do a review on the Heidinga saxophone necks if you get the chance?

Many thanks. Yes, these Heidinga necks sound fantastic - some big players using them. We shall see if we get the chance to try them!
I normally hear little or no difference in all the various mouthpiece and saxophone comparisons out there. This is the first time I could actually hear a difference, and what a difference it is. Thanks for the video. I personally like the Special Edition neck sound better.

Thanks for your comment!
Kirk Whalum is one of my favourite current saxophone players. The Kirk Whalum neck sounds brighter and like it has more power than the standard neck. If you get the chance, could you review Yanagisawa alto sax necks?

Thank you - we will consider doing this
Definitely brighter, but I prefer the standard neck 😊
Great video, as always Jim. How does this compare to Kirk Whalum tenor neck of Julius Keilwerth Saxophone?

I have the same question. I have the JK neck that looks exactly the same except the playing angle seems a little higher

I can't honestly say. When I get the chance to have both of these necks in the same room I will be trying them on different saxophones due to the bore dimensions being different. Keilwerth are famous for having a wider bore and therefore their necks aren't going to be compatible with other horns, so it makes this comparison impossible.

@@brianbutler9775 Hi Brian, see my above answer.
...I've got a super six...... Sounds awesome compared to stuffy others once you learn to deal with the lack of resistance.... More of everything but you have to produce the tone before you put it out there you can't rely on back pressure...
Hi there, does the Kirk Whalum special edition SVI neck work on a Selmer Mark VI Tenor sax? I know the tenon diameter may need to be adjusted to fit the smaller diameter of the selmer mkvi tenor neck, but once a tech. fixes that, is it a good match for the Selmer Mark VI Tenot Sax? Is intonation good etc.?
Jim, I’m looking to replace my Keilwerth MKX tenor neck, which is dented. Any recommendations as to a suitable replacement?

You are somewhat limited to Keilwerth necks as the bore dimensions are so specific (larger than the 'average'). I'd advise you to get in touch with our help desk on this. My immediate thinking is that you may be restricted to SX90 necks as I can't see MKX necks on the price list.
Can you tell me what ligutre you are using please? And also do they do one for alto ?

Yes, this is the Roberto Winds Ouvo ligature. Currently just available for tenor (see our website). It's fantastic!
I've known Kirk since the 70s, and I thought he had a relationship with Keilwerth! Has that changed?

Based on my understanding, Kirk has endorsed for P. mauriat since 2019.

Thanks! I haven't talked to him in a while!
Have they sorted out the build quality on P. Mauriat saxes these days? I have an older 66r, which I do love, but the tone holes are very un level. I'd be wary of buying any P. Mauriat products for that reason. I guess maybe there's less to go wrong with a neck though..?

Yes, there was a period many years ago when there were issues with the tone holes, but all in the distant past. Definitely worth you checking out a modern-day P Mauriat if you get the chance?

What for alto sax?

How is it possible that this new neck can have any special influence on the sound? The neck is a simple curved tube, with a given opening in both ends. What is it to work with? Somebody, for example you, have to explain to me the physics about the arguments you are using.
Sounds wonderful, bright and lots of tones. But maybe I'm biased loving my P.Mauriat, I would prefer the clearer , straiter sound of the standard mp. 🎶🎷🎶
