​​@@back2vinyl493I can't remember exactly when it was but there was an old Guitar for the Practicing Musician issue where they interviewed Yngwie and gave him a blind listening test or various guitarists in which he was basically roasting them all. I specifically remember Satriani and then when they told him it was Joe, Yngwie walked it back a bit saying he's normally fantastic. I seem to recall them showing him Kirk as well though and he ripped him apart, so I wouldn't be surprised if the band members know that as well. I'm pretty sure when Rolling Stone magazine did their top 100 guitarists of all time they listed Kirk above Yngwie, which was ludicrous, but they also listed Kirk above Joe Satriani which was the biggest wtf bullshit ever considering he was Kirk's teacher and is objectively better not even an argument. 😂

His guitar playing has become dull, repetitive live and on CD 😅(the man has a lot of great tunes, riffs, melodies, classical chord progressions and he deserves credit for his influence on european power metal guitar playing and metal in general. EVH did that for hard rock but when it comes to metal YJM is a major influence imo) His last enjoyable album to me was "Perpetual Flame" (I'm fond of his early classical guitar playing. Of course he is not a John Williams or Vicente Amigo kind of guitarist but you can tell he was devoted to the instrument) Cheers

I remember when i first started playing guitar i was 13 i walked into a record store with my mom and they would have guitar tab books as well. I bought Trilogy shit album and tab book blindly mainly because the cover of the album had him holding his guitar on a cliffside against what looked like the dragon Tiamat from Dungeons & Dragons (even though i was never into D&D) so yeah bought it sight unseen and he became one of my influences even before EVH, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and Metallica lol

Exactly. To me this stuff just feels like click bait trying to give fans the impression that Metallica can’t play anymore. So they pretended that Hammett was trying to play like Malmsteen to get guitar snobs to piss their pants laughing at Kirk because Malmsteen once said he wasn’t very good.

Yngwie didn't consider top three string arpeggios as true sweeps. Thats why he said that. He certainly never did any of those huge sweeps the Shrapnel guys or Drank Gambale were doing.

That was actually james playing the sweep pattern lol, Kirk was playing too but his volume knob was off (or they gave him the Jason treatment)

Mad respect to both Kirk and Yngwie. However, At the end of the day, Kirk doesn’t need to be able to play Yngwie licks. He’s penned/played stuff that is far more memorable that has managed to transcend beyond just the guitar playing community. No easy feat.

True that, Hammet! Yng's directional picking , with single note lines, is equal in tempo and velocity to sweep arpeggios . many times he goes back and fourth between the two, where as most guitarists will follow an entire progression with 2 octave arpeggios

You’re right, Yngwie is a virtuoso monster guitarist. Anyone knows that…but I’d rather listen to Kirk any day. Kirk has great feel and Yngwie is sterile. To make a more relatable comparison, Mustaine is better technically than Kirk too, but same thing. Being a technical wiz doesn’t mean shit…Unless you’re Steve Morse who would smoke both of them and everyone else too.

He was being sarcastic. These guys used to actually chill with Yngwie back in the 80s and Kirk knows his place, I remember reading Guitar World back in the early 90s when Kirk was talking about solos from Ride the Lightning where he was trying out some Yngwie shit. I can't tell you what song it was, and I grew up listening to Metallics, so that tells you it wasn't very good or memorable lol.

I'm still not sure what I love about Yngwie tbh., after I was introduced to his album Trilogy at 21 (now 57) by an evangelical church going heavy rocker. I then bought the first album Rising Force, later Odyssey and finally Eclipse. I guess it was the energy, ego fast playing and good song hocks, but also a level of mysticism, new found loves and my gradual move into heavy rock music and it's dress code. It was largely a blast from 21 to 24. I then moved pretty quickly from glam to grunge. Hmm, 24-28 was somewhat darker before moving to London. Without any doubt though, he's a legend, and his music is moulded into some great life experiences for me.

The day Kirk Hammett plays like Ygviewieeee Malmstien will be the day Metallica write an album better than Rust In Peace by Megadeth.

You know for years i always thought 'wow how does Kirk sound like Mustaine in solos but not as good,', then i found out he was actually just using Mustaines solos from early on. He then just kinda acquired that aggressive style of playing (Zakk Wylde is another one) but then once he learned what a wah wah pedal was he got progressively worse. Shoulda kept getting more Satriani lessons

Yngwie can certainly sing and reinterpret any song from Metallica, but the boys Lars and Kirk have to be born again to be able to sing like Yngwie. Yngwie is a genius who is born once every 10,000 years like Mozart ,Paganini,Bach, etc . and the guys from Metallica are good too, but they are miners besides Yngwie! 

Kirk is a great guitarrist. If youtube have many videos of young people playing like Yngwie, Kirk that is a experimented guitarrist, can play like Yngwie. He must practice and learn other style. You can play hard, metal, progressive and dont play flamenco, for example. Kirk plays in Metallica for 40 years. If he had played in other bands, other styles, he would have other musical experiences. All that being said, he doesn't need to play like another guitarist. He is and will be the guitarist of MetallicA. As Dave Murray is and will be the guitarist of Iron Maiden, and other great musicians who have luckily made their musical career in the same band. Sorry for my english.

The reality is this, music comes in “song format” and Metallica are masters of that. Their combined net worth of over a billion dollars is a testament to their song writing skills and popularity amongst Metal fans worldwide and that’s what guys like Malmsteen and many other great guitarists have to respect like it or not !!!

I used to be a hug fan of Metallica in the 80's. When you can't play another's style-put that person down after you are a mega success. Sad. Still a fan of Yngwie Malmsteen.
