Kinky Boots Team Introduces Us to Life as a Stage Manager

Ойын-сауық

What is it like to run the Cyndi Lauper-Harvey Fierstein musical backstage? Cast member Taylor Louderman lets us know how vital stage managers really are.
The jobs of stage managers are varied. Most Broadway shows have several stage managers, each of whom have different duties. One is assigned to make sure that all of the problems backstage and onstage get fixed. Another "calls" each performance, which involves announcing the lighting, sound, and stage cues to board operators from an offstage perch. It's a daunting task, one that takes skill and dedication. During a recent Wednesday matinee, the team from ''Kinky Boots'' at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre walked TheaterMania through their day for a bird's eye view at a job few audience members get to see.

This is so inspirational! Stage managers are definitely the most underated members of a production. They run EVERYTHING, and most people dont even knows they exist!

You were working with a bunch of narcs, that's why. Some casts have non-disordered people, but unfortunately, showbiz does have a tendency to attract narcissists. If you ever try the role again, hope you know ahead of time who you'd be working with, and decide whether you want to take the job, accordingly. ;)

Mo Poppins Luckily it was my high school's production, so at least it wasn't professional. But I was pretty much in charge of organizing everything (I played all three roles, also playing a minor character when someone backed out last minute) and pretty much everyone was being kinda mean to me lmao. I'm sure it was just jokes but I did expect some respect, considering I was organizing everything (including props and writing down blocking and helping individual actors since I'd done acting twice before then) AND I was at every rehearsal (even when I was super sick, the director lovingly forced me to go home) so I expected people to take me more seriously, even if they were sorta my friends. But it's all good, cuz I got a great recommendation for college and I'd do SM again at my college, although I much prefer acting :')

With such an eclectic and useful skill set, you'll have even more doors open for you. Actors aren't known to be the most "together" people, so knowing that you ARE, you're going to be more employable in that respect, and if you wanted to create your own projects, being organized will come in handy for all the hats you'll be wearing (maybe literally AND figuratively?).

It works differently on Broadway productions. The ASMs rotate through roles for shows, with one calling cues. The DSM will usually be there to supervise and to lead the team while maintaining control over background paperwork etc.
