    I've been meaning to pick one of these up. I'm a big fan of my Type XIV from the same line. It seems to have many of the same features and issues (albeit without the cross-guard looseness) as this one, so it's good to see that the rest of the line seems to present similarly good price:quality. Thanks for the great, very detailed review!

    I own the same sword. I've it had for at least eight months. Your review is spot on for this sword. I might've been lucky but my sword doesn't have issues with crossguard or scabbard. The crossguard doesn't move and the sword doesn't rattle or slide out of the scabbard. It is a production line sword, so these small QC issues will arise from sword to sword. I love this sword as costume piece for my ren faire outfit. I've got quite a few folks stop me and ask about the sword.

    Good to hear, I've got one on the way. I'm tall, but my other sword is very heavy, so, I wanted something more nimble.

    I recently picked up the kingston arms side sword. Considering you can pick it up for around $250.00 I think it’s fantastic.

    back again,,, after all this is one of my personal favorites of my collection. Call it one of my "real" ones, it's my sword. I am one of them , but I think there's quite a few people who would find that once they HAD this sword, they would like it quite a lot. You are of course an owner of so many swords, but particularly because of how light this sword is, and how manageable the size, it's a really nice sword to experience. ,,, like the boyhood sword. It's true that the cutting power is pretty low on the scale, and the hitting power is equally quite low, but if you were going to place a cut, I think a lot more people could imagine success with this over many of their other options. ,,, OF COURSE discussing "placing a cut" is like,,, yeah but no one is going to fight, but as it happens the mechanical enjoyment of swords includes imagining using them and how they would work,,,, so theres' that! ((yes,, I do agree that for 99% of everyone if they had to pick a sword to go and use,,, it should pretty much be a katana,, until you reach a certain experience and awareness a katana is the only sword that's even going to work))

    Type XV blades have a linear profile taper which looks more triangular, where type XVIII blades have a more gradual profile taper, so the edges have bit of a curve. Also type XV and XVa blades tend to be thicker and more rigid than the XVIII family of blades. The blade steel on Kingston Arms Atrim swords seem to all be 9260.

    you should try to buy or ask a katana iato of yarinohanzo its an italian maker and when it comes to iato they are pretty good try to ask them one of the higher katana i have one and its pretty neat even after more than 2 plus years of training.

    I definitely agree with you,,, if arming swords are your thing, you would keep this one unless you had one that felt the same but was still better. Type 14 is a totally different sword,, not even in the same category. (Heavy, not light). ,,, actually i bought it when i didnt think i wanted it,, and many days i feel the smartest for this one. (I mean plastic bottles are a pretty hard target, and stabbing is the most likely available attack,,, its a really proper sword)

    I think that curves in the cross-guard actually serve to strengthen them, not much but some.

    Lobe the weight and balance,, but I got one from the first run with the terrible edge geometry. Still grinding away trying to get a decent edge on her. Can tell by the pommel you got ome of the improved second run....

    Mine is one of the winners. ,,, lucky me. It looks a lot like this one here,, minus the unusual shadow (pretty clearly visible). I wasnt going to buy one because i was all of this goofy crossguard, but i was emailing sbg store about making a selection and p.s. suggested well this one,,, i usually feel like well that sword is cool , but this one i felt like,, ah, i can imagine using it. (Im pretty small).

    Great video as always I enjoy all your videos and all the info you provide. One question, I'm new to sword collecting. What would be your recommendation for the best chisa katana and wazashi in the 1,000 to 1,500 dollar range? Each not for a pair. So 1,000 to 1,500 for each the chisa katana and wazashi. What company and sub model would you recommend? Any info you could provide would be helpful. Or if you already have a video on this topic I would definitely watch. I have gone through your katana videos and I'm just not sure which would be the best choice in your opinion. I bought a cold steel chisa katana and wasn't very happy with it. Unfortunately I did not see your video on the cold steel katana until after I ordered it. I'm going to post a video on my channel about the issues it came with from the factory, which were many. Thanks for your help and information. Keep it up.

    Do you mean a sword with a 24-25” blade?

  • @KF1
    @KF13 жыл бұрын

    16:10 ish, that definitely looks like a tempering effect. My guess is the sword is flexible above that line, and rigid or malleable below. I have a th katana with a similar line just above the habaki. Has not proved detrimental to the performance or toughness, though could possibly be, given this blade is much thinner.

    A soft / iron tang is apparently a fairly common feature on historical european swords. though that is a bit high on the blade tbh. Soft tang akes a lot of sense. bending instead of breaking, being able to work & peen it even after hardening, without having to re-heat it...

  • @KF1

    @KF1

    @@Sareth94 Fair point. On certain swords I can definitely see it as a bonus, depending on placement. It's just a bit unsightly when visible above the cross guard. I'm just speculating, though figure the ideal would be much closer to the pommel.
