The history of Cyprus is much older. In fact, the first recorded naval battles happened here between the Hittites and Cyprians/Cypriots. There were two naval battles and one land battle in which the Hittites won and took over Cyprus.

Great and informative about a niche subject. My knowledge of ancient Cypriot history was- 1) lots of copper 2) Caesar gave it back to Cleopatra I had no idea they squeezed 10 kingdoms on that thing. Thanks for being the best new history channel on YT!

Amathus wasnt phoenician, it was eteocypriot (indigenous cypriot). It just had good relationships with the phoenicians.

Thank you very much for your research and effort, Cy! I used to work in Cyprus. Paphos is still referred to "old City and a new city" areas, due to the earth quake. Curium, further north, on the coast, has an ancient ampatheater, where they still have Shakspearian plays. I was also in Cyprus during a serious earth quake in the mid 90's. It was pretty scary. You said there was a ruler, named "Kipre-on" (Spelled phonetically)? "Kipre-o" is how Greeks refer to the island today. In Greek, "Kipre-o" means "Copper." Thanks again!

Love this one! There is so much history in all these places and it’s great to see someone cover the lesser-known ones. If you haven’t already I would love to see one like this on Rhodes over time - really interesting history and some amazing stories from ancient to classical times, and then the site of two of the greatest sieges in the Med in the 15th and 16th centuries. Thanks for the great video!

I used to have a Archaeology magazine article that told how around 4000 yrs ago Cyprus ( before Phoenicians and Greeks there ) was like an exotic ancient island subculture as they lived to be disconnected from anything happening in the mainland .. was intentional ,not accidental . They were intelligent to have a well planned subcultural civilization there . If they seemed primitive it was only because they were richly exotic compared to changes on the mainlands . They in this sense are maybe like an ancient partly remote island people like the south Pacific islands were once more so before being modernized . This is in ways very unique with Cyprus in those old ,old days. Really think this thru to see why that can be . Cyprus had it's own unique culture , broke off from mainland , once ! In these things I wish I can obtain extreme deep details . I don't settle for surface like sensations and do go way beyond that . I love topics and curiously search hard if I'm able .. beyond what Cy does it appears .

I've recently stumbled upon this hidden gem of a channel and am currently binge watching everything. Tbh, this content is way too underrated. Keep up the great work!

Much later on parts of Cyprus were ruled by the Egyptians -a fact few people know -and what I mean by "Egyptian" is the Greco-Macedonian Ptolemaic dynasty which ruled Egypt from about 300 BC to about 50BC (approx.) There are tombs in Cyprus from this era.The Ptolemaic Egyptians also ruled substantial parts of the mainland opposite Cyprus (the region of Cilicia)When Mark Antony met Cleopatra on that famous golden barge as described by Shakespeare it was not,I believe, on the river Nile but on the river Pyramos which is in the region of Cilicia(south east Turkey)Their fleet was also based on some of the Aegean islands like Cos.

Thank you. From school I had noticed that the number of ancient kingdoms varied. It is good to know the sources that list them. I noticed that you mention the island was known as Alassia, but there is not a city or a kingdom with that name. It would be very interesting to watch also a video on the ancient names of Cyprus. From what I remember Makaria and Aeria are some of them...

Great video and very informative about one of the most important islands in the Mediterranean! At 9:13, you mention that Ktion was established by Phoenicians who called it "Qart Hadasht." However, that was the name the Phoenicians gave to Carthage, located in modern day Tunisia. Carthage = Qart Hadasht meaning "New City."

Carthage is the most famous one but I've read that even the city of Cartagena in Spain was also once called Kart Hadasht. I supposed there could have been multiple cities with the same name, just like today we have London, UK as well as London, Ontario in Canada. As a Cypriot, I appreciate this a LOT Cyprus has such an interesting history, which we learn about quite well in school About the Kingdoms, about Hellenization, even about the Cypro-Minoan and way later the Cypriot syllabary based on the Linear A We also learn that, while not Greek, Cyprus spoke Greek, as well as its own Eteocypriot until Hellenization We also learn of the lesser but still true Phoenician influence Of course we didn't learn it under some of these names because it's too complicated but still We learn about Onesilos who is a legend here, and I live in a village whose football team is named after him Although, we don't know much about the minor city states like Soloi and Idalio, we learn some stuff about Salamina, Paphos, Kition and maybe Amathus, Lidra (because Nicosia) and Tamassos (because Copper) and Lapethos, which was quote important and you forgot about it So, thank you for your work

Visiting Odessa in Ukraine I thought I'd stop over and have a look at a local museum. To my astonishment, it had ancient artefacts from Cyprus, my country. Cited in the video are exhibits from foreign museums. But none from a local one, if I'm not mistaken. From the Metropolitan Museum in New York to the British Museum, to the Louvre and beyond. Even the Swedes "shop lifted" in the 30's ancient pieces of art packed in 600 crates. Licensed by the British. Not much evidence eh? Of course, removed and scattered, much of which sitting in basements. But I wonder. Is it possible that ancients manuscripts have been stolen also? It can't be only statues, statuettes, pottery and such stuff. Further. It seems that earthquakes were very devastating back then. That is the reason given commonly in such like videos. Well listen. The "earthquake" was one. And it came by decrees. The memory had to be erased for the new player in town to take root. So the island of beauty became the island of "saints". The heritage of this island is predominantly Greek. The Trojan War took place much earlier than cited in "history" books today. If it is "troubled" history you are looking for, look no further than the Mediterranean basin and surrounding lands. Alexander was not a conqueror. If he was looking for lands why not Europe? Because Europe was already Macedonia. His expedition was global, stopped short by treason and assassination.

What is the comparison of Cyprus City kingdoms to Aegean Kingdoms?

You see. Knowing that the island of Cyprus was HEAVELY influenced by the Phoenicians, gives the whole "Aphrodite was born in the shores of Cyprus" myth a far greater hystorical and anthropological meaning. Aphrodite is just an ellenised version of the goddess Astarte. Wich eventualy reached the shores of Greece and gained a new identity. Prior to this, there was no mention of the goddess in pre-classical greece. So, the myth of the birth of Aphrodite is literaly a miticization of real hystorical events that signified the union of two cultures into one. HOW FASCINATING IS THAT!!!!??? ✨✨✨ I LOVE when ancient cultures do this kind of stuff. It makes the myths feel more real. And makes us, by extention, more closer to those ancient times on an emotional level. Maybe it's just me. But these ordeals make me feel all fuzzy inside.

@@cloudwaveASMRsleepsounds Dionysus is actualy a native greek god. He was worshipped even prior to the classical era of greek history, during the bronze age. He is one of the older gods, his name was found in a text written in linear B, alongside other gods like Poseidon and Persephone. Hironicaly, the greeks decided to claim that he is a forein god because they grew ashamed of it, kinda. His cult was insane, and greek moralists of the classical era were not into that. Why did they claim he was a forein god? Ever noticed that all the weird practices, monsters, etc in greek mithology live outside of mainland Greece? That is because the Greeks viewed themselves as the bringers of culture, superior to all other cultures. They were not racists. They were just... Meh... Look. Ancient greek cities barely managed to relate with each other. How do you think they would relate to other cultures. They did not understand them. The world was smaller back then. And the average greek never met an egyptian, or a jew, or a phoenician. They only heared of them, and the rest were stereotipes and fiction. So yeah. Dionysus was creepy, and insane, and many other things. So they claimed he was a forein god cause they felt better this way. 🤷 His character changed a lot thruought history tho. Pre classical Dionysus was a whole different beast than classic Dionysus. Still an interesting story tho. Makes you think about the ancient greeks mindset and view of the world.

You're way wrong aphrodite is a native Greek and anatolian Goddess with little similarities to astarte other than love deities. She is ever present in both predark age Greece via before 1000 bce and strong mycenae era 2500 bce to 1700 bce. You ar ees way wrong it's the opposite astarte got influence from aphrodite instead. You got it backwards wards my misinformed friends.

I wish you would do the Balkans. Lots of history to be uncovered

Those Turks Cypriot are friendly with Kurdish and they prefer marriage with Kurdish than Turkish and I as Kurdish I was meeting a lots of Turk Cypriot and one of them saying the turk Cypriot are Kurdish origin and converted to turk during Othman conquest and they was Alavi-Shia Islam and there are no historical evidence to show when they was placed there or by which empire , however we Kurdish not considered them as Kurdish and we don’t have any historical evidence showing Kurdish migration or part of land in Cyprus but if Greek or Cyprus has any historical evidence about it it’s time to kick out turkey and united island plus first mistrial government for those Kurdish origin,

The Canannites ,before they were overran by the Semitic tribes ,coming out of Mesopotamia,Syria were Greeks from Crete and some Agean islands.after this time they were mixed with the invaders.

@@tassiek2450 The Canaanites were Greek ?! I'm curious to know were u know this from ! Now Canaanites are basically half Caucasian as shown recently, the other half being the inhabitants of the Levant at that time (still unknown) ! Doubt it would be Greek since that would make the Canaanites purely non Semitic (which is not true) ! Though Greeks & Canaanites(Phoenicians) did intermingle ! Many Phoenicians lived in Greece & vice versa (which is why u'd find a bit of each's DNA in the other)

@@primatalogico1162 the Cannnanites you refer about ,yes I agree with you .they were Half Caucasian or not even half..but the first colonizers to the land were Cretans( greeks) and from the Agean basin.the were overran eventually by the invading semetic tribes from Mesopotamia,Syria and my assumption even northern Arabia.most were exterminatedthe rest were forcibly or willingly assimilated..my assumption.
