This brings back memories. The anxiety of being caught by Mananan at any given time. The anxiety while walking down that mountain path the first time. The anxiety of facing the Medusa. The anxiety of possibly mistyping something while casting a spell in the cellar lab. Of course, those were different times, when creating or loading a savegame onto a floppy disk took roughly a minute......

I bought this game for a friend of mine for his birthday when we were 12 or 13. His mother found out about the game and was not happy because of her religious beliefs. She said the fact that there was a wizard and magic spells in it made it blasphemous. She not only forbid my friend from playing it, she also threw it away. I was only 12 or 13 years old......I had spent my allowance on this......and she tossed it in the trash. I was upset, to say the least.

Had a copied floppy in the late 80s and got stumped with the spell book. Very clever of the programmers to put the actual spell book in the game's manual. I must have spent hours trying every command to read the spell book, re-exploring the house and the small countryside. I had no idea that this was a game that truly required the manual

I didn't have the manual either. The atmosphere and design of the game was GENIUS, and it was probably designed as an insult to people who pirated the game (as I did), because ironically, if you pirated it you were trapped on the island in just the same was as Gwideon. The wizard is Sierra Games, the pirate is Gwideon

Yep. Each Sierra classic I knew I was in for at least 6 months of work. Loved it all though. Don't know how I managed to finish these games back then without having walkthroughs. That said we'd spend hours as a family trying to figure it out or use the correct word. Police Quest 2 was our hardest and were stuck for eons when searching Sonny's girlfriends apartment. Always wrote 'look at ashtray' and nothing. Probably about a year of replaying the game until we figured our 'look in ashtray'.

+thesnare100 It's because there isn't a demand of these type of games any more. Or rather there isn't much of one. Video Game companies, like it or not, are businesses and as such must strive to make money in order to make games, and that means going with what the market says. Glad to hear someone else say this! I honestly feel it's the best one. It may have just been my age at the time, but I thought this had the best coherence between setup, story, tensions, logical puzzles. All tied together with the fact that we don't know who we are to begin with, and Manannan keeps us relatively confined to the house area until we begin to understand our situation better, and learn to grab and hide, and ultimately use magical items, to get free.

She said the fact that there was a wizard and magic spells in it made it blasphemous. She not only forbid my friend from playing it, she also threw it away. I was only 12 or 13 years old......I had spent my allowance on this......and she tossed it in the trash. I was upset, to say the least.

That's funny. My dad's 2nd wife was an evangelical Christian who HATED Magic Cards (which I played) cuz they "of Satan/Satanic" but introduced me to all these old Sierra games, and played SNES games like Earthbound/The Legend of Zelda etc. I definitely understand how that goes.

My favorite game in the King's Quest series. Watching this brings back so many memories!

Had a copied floppy in the late 80s and got stumped with the spell book. Very clever of the programmers to put the actual spell book in the game's manual. I must have spent hours trying every command to read the spell book, re-exploring the house and the small countryside. I had no idea that this was a game that truly required the manual

One of my favorites like Oregon trail
This one was so freakin' hard...
Also getting the hintbook always helped. I still remember having to use that marker plenty of times over the years for different games lol.
I actually cried at the end of this game. LOL! When the next one came out I was choked because you required 512K to play it and my computer only had 256K. LMAO! I wish they would come out with games like this for iPad. I'd totally buy them all.

Ha! No kidding! As a kid leaving the house and walking down that curvy path was SUPER hard, let alone the rest of the game! First Sierra game ever played. First game to buy hint book :D
I never noticed it plays the song "Drunken Sailor" when you meet the pirates at the tavern. No wonder that became my favorite shanty on AC: Black Flag. 0:-) Loved these games! I just remember a lot more painful "hurry get back before Manananarama returns".
I was afraid of the wizard all the time...🥶😱🧙🏻♂️

Little unorthodox to play it in filtered mode isn't it? :) Surely true pixel is the way to go!! One of my favorite games ever! :)

Nice longplay man, good pace and flawess actions :) This is one of the most beautiful chapters and the saga starts to improve here. Love the story and the way it reconnects to previous chapters. Hated the spells part, but Manannan is an awesome character.

This is my first time hearing the music this way… when I played this years ago, my old computer’s sound card only played one mono music channel at a time. It was charming but clunky… it’s nice to finally hear how it was meant to sound.

+thesnare100 It's because there isn't a demand of these type of games any more. Or rather there isn't much of one. Video Game companies, like it or not, are businesses and as such must strive to make money in order to make games, and that means going with what the market says. I personally do not like shooters, but I can at least see that they are still in high demand, so of course they take priority.

We never had this game when it came out, do you know what the average cost of a computer was in 1986? Not 300 for a laptop like today, let me tell you. Commodore's I think were cheaper, if you could play it on one, think this was DOS only.
for those that never played these types of games, for every new area, your first action would always have to be " look around " and then read the description of the area to see if there's any clues of what you had to do next.
