KING OF TONE vs PRINCE OF TONE | Gear Corner | Comparison

Музыка

I highly recommend using good headphones or studio monitors when watching this video!
I have been asked so many times, if the Prince of Tone is really like the King of Tone.
Well... I gave my best to capture all the similarities and the differences in this video.
If your a person who simply couldn't care less about tiny (and I mean TINY) differences between pedals, then this is sooo not your video. haha!

Just right now I was wondering if I stick to PoT + D&M Drive as today or make a trade to a KoT. I would do the trade if it wasn't a high gain sacrifice on my pedalboard. So it's a keep the PoT for me. Thanks a lot!

Really glad I watched your video. Well done. I have owned the KoT twice, and decided I preferred other ODs. I encountered Line 6’s HXFX PoT model and it sounded good, so thought I might pick up a real PoT. Your comparison comments are exactly what I hear- more chime and thump from KoT; narrower sound from PoT. Saved me an experiment!

Nice comparison! To my ears, I preferred the POT in the cleaner boost settings, but preferred the slightly fuller sound of the KOT for the distortion settings. That being said, I owned a King years ago and didn’t keep it. Currently running a Prince on my board and love it!

I have been on the KOT waiting list for over a year, so at best I can get one from AnalogMan in 2022. I decided to get a POT while I waited, and though I love that pedal, I'm still keeping an eye out for a decent priced KOT along the way. This is by far the best comparison video I've seen for these two pedals. In OD setting, I'm hearing more clarity and definition in the KOT than the POT though there isn't a huge difference. In Distortion, the KOT definitely has a fuller sound and more low end than the POT, though I'd love to hear a comparison in a band setting because the POT may cut through a bit better. In boost mode, they sound nearly identical to me and I love to use my POT as a boost after my Blues Driver. I would say that the KOT wins in this comparison, but the POT is a great pedal. Having the boost on hand to use on top of the OD would be awesome, and I'm not sure that I am interested in just getting a second POT, though that is an option. Thanks for this great video!

Best comparison video on these pedals that I’ve seen: well done! For my personal situation, I have wanted a KOT and for circa $700 to $ 900, I could buy one… or for just over $200 I could buy a used POT… After listening to your comparison and several others, for my ear and the😂 sound I’m looking for, the POT is the ticket I’m going to be satisfied with! So, one is currently on the way to my house! Excellent video! Thanks very much! The comparison was also demonstrated on several other channels as well but yours was by far the best IMHO!

The KoT Sounds mor like a Vintage Amp with a Tube rectifier, more spongy in the lows and has a bit more Low mids. If the presence and clarity was the only big difference, just set the internal presence pot of P.O.T. a bit higher, maybe K.O.T. defaults are a bit brighter, and Prince has it lower to sound better with it's higher gain settings.

I had both. KOT has more presence, is cleaner, amp sound like. POT has a huge range of sounds inside, dirtier, but awesome for rhythm. My favorite is KOT, but in this video, POT sounds incredible. I kept KOT and sold POT, but someday I will get another one.

Based on the 2nd half of this demo I liked POT much better for its clear and more distinct tone both when picking and playing chords. I had POT and enjoyed it a lot , then sold thinking that Helix digital model is close enough, but eventually re-purchased POT and not going to part with it any time soon. KOT's tone in this Chinese version sounds muddier, may be it is "more harmonically rich", but I prefer transparency for both clean and compressed sounds.

Great video Kris. There was a difference, but maybe +/-10% in sound, to me no but the feel does play a big factor. My Lovepedal Amp11 ($110 on CL) has a great sound and a fantastic feel so I play the hell out it. To answer your question No, I wouldn't pay $300+ more but my playing needs more than an additional 10% to sound good.

It feels like PoT have more gain, compresion and Id say balls. KoT feels more dynamic, open and more fun to play at lower gains crunch settings. It looks like in the beginning if the video you enjoyed KoT lot more, like it responds more to your playing ( pick dynamics etc ). But as you hit highest gain settings, it looks like you enjoyed the extra balls of PoT more. Good that you actualy played it, instead of putting just loop in front of it. For me, it is important to see the person playing the pedal and see the reactions and emotions of the presenter. Great work, great video. Thanks for it \m/

stanislavmigra Thanks a lot! Yeah, the PoT sounds ever so slightly narrower (less high end, less low end) and for that reason it sounds a little tighter on full gain settings. I liked that I must say. I still prefer the warmth, the bell-like overtones and the dynamics of the KoT.

Had a PoT, and I liked it... just not as much as I like my Keeley Oxblood. They're not the same thing, but for what I used the pedals for (quite low-gain, as well boosting high-gain amps), I just preferred the Ox. I played a homie's KoT briefly, and it felt... basically the same for me? I'm also really not a vintage, bluesy player. Indie rhythms, metal chugs, and barely saturated ambient stuff are my usual go-to. That said, the Analog Man pedals are absolutely choice. You really can't go wrong with any of the above.

E.g. the final frequency curve of the KoT as a shadow in the background and the live curve of the PoT infront. You know what I'm after? Does this make any sense? This would allow a viewer to see which frequencies are pushed in one pedal more than the other... Hi! For the KOT, does having the high gain mod done have an effect on the overall tone of that particular side, besides just adding more gain? If you had the high gain mod done to both sides, how would that affect the clean and OD modes overall? Does the high gain change any characteristics compared to when it's not added into the circuit? I recently got on the list, and I'm just trying to decide whether to get the high gain on one side or both, although I'll have a looong time to decide! Probably getting the POT also after seeing this video! :)

  • @christopherburnett1745

    @christopherburnett1745

From everything I've seen on them, the high gain mod doesn't affect the tone of the pedal. It's really only a minor bump. The gain you have at 2:00 without the mod is what you have at around 12:00 with it. Fwiw, I think that I'll go with high gain on the red (right) side and a toggle switch on top to be able to switch from OD to Dist, etc, on the fly. I'll leave the left side on boost. Good luck!

I'm quite sure you can get another KOT and POT and compare them and this time to POT will sound better. I have both (I must have paid over 3 times the retail value for my KOT), in my case my POT sound richer and warmer compared to my KOT. Still love both but the POT have that extra little something. Sergey Popov this was the closest they would get for that sound. If you turn up the tone higher on the prince it gets very harsh (compared to the king). As I told at the beginning, I tried to match my KoT settings with the PoT, so I didn’t want to dial back from my ideal King of Tone setting. Cheers man!

Kot as said has more low end and less harsher high gain sound. Prince of tone as named is second to the king, but compared to other pedals in its class, it would be the professional musicians choice. It think every guitar player should have at least one of analog Mike's pieces in their collection

What I am hearing is that the KoT has a bit more low mids somewhere, not a lot, but a bit. And overall the PoT has a bit more presence, but I bet tweaking the internal presence trim pot would make it even closer to the Kot. It's easy to like the KoT as it sounds warmer, but in practicality, the slightly leaner sound of the PoT is more useful in band and recording settings for sure.

Maybe i'm only convincing myself of something, but it sounds like the KoT has a little more 'harmonic complexity,' and the Prince is a simpler version of the same thing. I'm still in the middle of the video, and i'm hoping at the end you reveal you've been pranking us, and the KoT sounds are really from the King.... // So, yeah, i'd wait. The 5-10% difference is the same kind of difference between a cheap Chinese clone and the real thing. My name just came up on the KoT wait list, and i'm looking forward to getting it, being dissatisfied with it because i suck as a player, selling it for a profit, and buying three other pedals in its place.
