    Quick sidenote: If you have the Power up! expansion, which monster you choose will, in fact, matter quite a bit. All monsters get an evolution deck, with one-off and even permanent powers and upgrades specifically geared towards your monster. Changes up the whole game and I highly reccomend getting it if you love King of Tokyo!

    Watching this makes me sad that they removed the Cyber Bunny in the new edition. That pink cat thing just lacks all the heart of the bunny. Luckily I have the originally, and I ALWAYS play Cyber Bunny :D

    Great review, Matt! Me and my mates like to play a mini campaign of sorts, usually 3 games played in a row. When a game ends, everyone keeps their cards and energon cubes and resets their points. Everyone who died sets their starting health equal to the lowest health of the surviving players, but anyone whose health is less than 5 when starting a game, they get put up to 5. Things can get pretty scrappy towards the end but the power-ups are brought into play a bit more. I usually find myself holding back for a game, trying to heal myself, so I can wreck shop in the next game!

    The best part of this game is actually at the end when you can take your cards and actually envision your monster. For instance, Mecha Dragon, two heads, freeze blast, kid friendly and psychic adds up to a metal dragon who has one head that breaths ice cream and the other head uses psychic powers to determine a kid's favorite flavor of ice cream. Or darker, two heads who lures children in with his psychic powers and then freezes them to take them away.

    I'd call that technically true... But this isn't the sort of game I would use that sentence for. Games like fishbowl, and dixit are at the MERCY of the sort of people you play with. This game is quite a bit more forgiving of who you play it with compared to the games that require the players to come up with the content.

    I loved this game until I got Dice Throne. Dice Throne uses similar dice mechanics, but every single aspect and component is better. You've always got a hand of cards that you can use to prevent damage or mess with someone's rolls, but you have to decide if you want to sell those cards for upgrades of your multiple, player-specific abilities, or if you want to save up and spend everything on cards that change things up to give your ultimate attack, which does incredible damage to someone that they can do nothing to stop. Way more strategy. Way more variation between rounds. I still like King of Tokyo BUT I'd always rather play some Dice Throne.

    I didn't say it wasn't for me. "good for 10 matches" is a solid game. I loved it too. but after you get over the discovery phase, the game comes down more to luck of the roll and of the cards that come up rather than skill.

    Couple things from someone who owns and has played a bit: Rolling for points is often the most effective strategy to win. This maybe needs to be nerfed and I believe it is nerfed in the newest verison of this game. Rarely does the energy and powerup system feel rewarding or impactful enough. You cannot ever really go for an 'card level up' strategy because you are too limited by the cards on display. And also opportunity cost of not rolling for points. To be honest, combat aggression or rolling for points are far, far more potent. I would suggest a house rule where there are maybe 6 cards available to buy from the get go, rather than 3 and someone has to pay to refresh. because nobody is gonna pay to refresh. so you're all stuck with bad cards the entire game.

    This is a bit of an imagination base game. Part of the fun is watching your monster evolve over the game and giving it personality. The other thing is it is not designed to be a "git gud" type of game where a person who has played for hours is far ahead of the learning curve. Also throwing and selecting and re-throwing dice is not as random as just throwing dice, just as player elimination is not always bad in games. This game intensifies and speeds up with less players and no one is going out early so by the time people do go out the game is mature enough to end. The quickest I saw someone get taken out was when my group hit me for seven in two players, and I basically was struggling to keep my head above water the rest of the game. I still was in for all but the latest of game. The problem I had was I was not investing enough into keeping hearts over power and so was getting hit a bit from people in Tokyo or would end up in Tokyo at five life instead of seven. Now a days I would just select hearts to keep and stay out of Tokyo by not keeping damage. And even if my last roll was damage, I'd probably not take Tokyo with one damage or if I did, would get out also with a light thrashing as *no one* is going to kill you in one roll unless already in later game with cards or you are in Tokyo with low health and they are a jerk. But then if they are able to roll well enough to kill, then that sort of removes the whole "chucking dice" argument.

    It felt the same for me but only played twice. Didn´t feel the excitement. Just rolling dice and making mostly easy decisions based on the result. Sure from time to time you have kind of exciting roles and everyone is engaged in what is going to happen. That wasn´t enough for me though and it also way overstayed it´s welcome by going over 35 minutes.

    @@nateiverson8681 Same here. When I bought KoNY, one of my m8s said I should have bought Tokyo instead... then my cousin went to actually play Tokyo and was wondering why he wasn't playing NY instead. Thing is. Sure Tokyo is easier, but NY is an easy game still and it just adds that bit more theme that tokyo is lacking. You are actually destroying things and the people are fighting back.

    I am really surprised that there was not mention of the expansions for this game. Without the "Power Up" expansion, I will not play this game. Power Up just adds so much theme and fun to the game! Without it, it is a bit of a bland dice chucker.

  • @Shenaldrac
    @Shenaldrac5 жыл бұрын

    The problem is is that Matt makes it out that you can play the game how you want, but you can't. You can play the game how the dice results allow you to. If you want to be a big fighter and play by smashing face, well, that doesn't matter if you keep rolling things that aren't attack symbols. And the same goes for everything else. Did you want to buy that cool power in the shop? Well if you don't roll energy, tough luck! Sure you ca reroll a couple times, keeping the dice you want, but you can absolutely still get only 1-2 attack symbols, or energy, or whatever it was you needed. And this dovetails horribly with player elimination, because the worst kind of player elimination is the kind that you don't really have control over. It sucks when you lose a game, but at least in games with more agency you can learn from your losses, or you can understand work to avoid losing. But when you losing happens because the other guy just happened to roll better, that feels shit. When you have nothing you can do about it, nothing to mitigate the damage, no *decisions* to make in response, then... why not just play Yahtzee?

    Julio Solís Why do that when you could have shown the new version of the game and simply compared it to the old version...clearly showing the differences?!? Re-uploading an old video is rather "low hanging fruit"...and simply supports what I said about setting the bar low. I enjoy the vast majority of reviews and playthroughs that this channel produces...but frankly this re-upload is a bit of a disappointment.

    chill out dude. this is the FIRST time that this game is being uploaded to youtube. making videos is a laborious and time consuming process. uploading a vimeo video is something they can do for us that takes very little effort, and that it why we are getting so many videos from them recently. They haven't stopped making new videos, and the uploads isn't getting in the way of the production of the new ones.

    weesh ful Well *NOT* according to Julio (if you bothered to read his reply to my original post). According to him...this is a re-upload of an old video. You don't need to tell me about what all is involved when it comes to recording and editing videos. I've been working in the video production industry probably longer than you've been alive. You want to talk about "laboris and time consuming"... try doing an A/B roll with dual 1 inch tape decks while making sure your audio stays synchronized. I've done that hundreds of times!
