Love how it's an original figure but it still takes inspiration from from the OG '33 Kong.

Yeah he looks awesome. I actually like how it’s an original thing and not tied to just one specific Kong movie so it appeals to more collectors. When Neca hits a home run they knock it out of the park. I’d book him against Vader.

I can’t argue that logic, makes a lot of sense actually. It’d be a tough fight for Vader, but if he nails one of those clotheslines that he flattened Shamrock with, it could be a wrap for Kong.

NECA doesn't technically have the specific license to 33 Kong, which is why this isn't closer to the original movie design. I think they went about as close as they felt they could, without legal risk.

The rights to Kong are all over the place, I’m not sure who even has the original RKO Pictures version rights at this point. I remember trying to figure this all out when I reviewed the Mezco Kong last year and I just gave up. Still, I’d love to see NECA do an Ultimate version with more 1933 expressions.

Ooooh, I'm jelly of that book. Need to snag one. I think well definitely get more Kongs from NECA. I mean, why not, right? Black and white version, ultimate with more heads, etc. Closed mouth please! Kong is so my jam, so it's always great to see someone that equal love, makes the reviews sweeter to watch. And yeah, Mezco is from a book with a comic that I lettered lol. Great review, man!

I got that book on clearance for like three dollars back in 2010 haha. It covers everything Kong up until pre-production on the Peter Jackson movie, so it’s pretty comprehensive. Lots of great stuff about RKO, Toho, and the 76/King Kong Lives movies too. Highest recommendation! Thanks for checking this out! I’ve definitely gotta track down that comic so I can finally fully take in the references and say that I know the guy who did the lettering haha.

The 1933 version IS Kong to me. I’m biased because it’s my favorite movie but still, it’s such a good design and it’s stood the test of time

@@CaptainMcKayRandom then here something that might make you smile or ME your favorite sub.the Kong vs Godzilla is kinda bad looking to me.i always thought that even in Jurassic park looked more REEL then Jurassic world.so I'm recreating it in stop motion using puppet lookalikes so that it looks like it's not a cheep video game.and I hope you know your review helped to make the model for Kong.i saw another review prefer the angry head.and to me that just looks like a boring real gorilla.anyway thanks for the visuals plz do something more to assist me like Godzilla or some junk anyway thanks.!!

Great review Captain! I've been waiting for this to come out. Soon as I heard of it I placed a preorder for several. Didn't know Target was gonna carry this as well though. We've been in need of a good, affordable articulated ape for a while, lol. Definitely hope they keep going and maybe do some other versions of him.

The out of the box face is so 1933 and is the reason I must have it!!!.

Yeah this figure is awesome. Don't mind the battle damage but I would've preferred little less but still great size and great look. Also I believe this is the only figure that resembles the '33 King Kong which is one of my favorite films.

Yeah, the McFarlane is also very 1933 in its look but this one is way more articulated and overall the better choice.

Being an "old" monster fan. This is a great looking Kong. Ahh to be young again and collect.

That figure looks awesome!! I really like the 33 inspired head which, when I get it, it will be the only head put on the figure. The alternate head reminds me of the mezco roaring kong head with the gums protruding out of the mouth like that. If NECA would make the figure in a B&W scale also like mezco and then they could make a calm 33 face. I really like the way it looks and it's a definite buy

Can't believe he's already out😁🤘 great review also if anyone wants a Ann Darrow there's a worlds smallest 1959 Barbie that could scale well with kong she's wearing a black and white swimsuit

I agree. I like the SHMA for articulation and scale, but appearance-wise, this Kong is MUCH nicer.

Bring back the Godzilla Stop Motion Films

I get that this is heavily based on the 33 kong and that kong basically had these proportions, but they said this was their own take so they could have given him some extra harrier forarms similar to 05 kong which would have made his arms feel larger and less lanky. However neca has the king kong liscence so they most likely ate going to make more kongs

Wonder if sense they got the KK license if they can do a Skull Island Kong figures I know they can’t do GVK stuff and probably not his design in it because of them loosing the Godzilla license.

I wouldn’t mind seeing them do another version, but I’m glad this one is mostly movie accurate.

Wish it was smaller so it'd fit with the Godzilla figures

Love both mezco and neca Kongs but prefer the mezco one with a better sculpt and more accessories, but neca's has better articulation

Kevin Barberio the mezzo isn’t really good. It’s head is extremely loose and it is very stiff in the articulation. Also NECA has a better sculpt then mezco

Sudarshan ara Mezco is heavier. It’s a very solid figure. It doesn’t look like the movie because it’s not based on a movie version of Kong. I reviewed it a while back, you can check out that video if you want to know more about the Mezco figure.

Mezco Kong looks really aggressive, intimidating and powerful than any other versions....

Less articulation and lacking in paint apps, but the Kong: Skull Island action figure scales really well with the NECA Godzilla figures

There were two 2014s from NECA. The 12” head-to-tail is smaller, the one I meant was 24” head-to-tail and is about a foot tall with sound effects. I should have been more specific

Kong was 26 or so after tax. Their Ultimate figures are about 30ish, and usually include more accessories. And as mentioned, they recently lost the Godzilla license, so if you have any interest at all, I’d get Godzilla figures while you still can find them.

It doesn't come with its' own "Ann Darrow" figure? That's one demerit for it in my book.

I agree with you 100% about the 2005 Peter Jackson King Kong, it's one of my least favorite Kong movies.. besides the movie being too long. I like you always felt the 2005 Kong just felt like a big gorilla rather than being his own species...I found this Kong today at Target & I too own the McFarland Kong, Mezco Kong & the SH Monster Arts Kong and I would have to say this is the definitive articulated King Kong figure. shame he doesn't scale with the NECA Godzilla's though..... its like the Imperial Godzilla and King Kong all over again in 2020..lol

I believe it had brown fur on the original model. It was tough to tell in a black and white movie.
