The Petrox company's search for new oil reserves on a strange island unleashes a terror unseen by civilized man - KING KONG! The timeless story of a beauty (Jessica Lange, making her feature-film debut) and a beast comes to the screen in this ambitious production from Dino De Laurentiis. Charles Grodin is the scheming oil company shark out to exploit the giant beast to his fullest. And Jeff Bridges is the desperate hero, Jack Prescott, who attempts to wrest the beautiful heroine from King Kong's grasp. New York City trembles with each echoing footstep of the towering ape set loose in the streets!

I hate how people give this movie bad reviews. To each his own. Just get in to it. It's a great film, the musical score is fantastic. Quite an accomplishment as far as films go for the time it was made. I saw it when I was 6. Out of all versions, this is the film for me. Maybe not you, but a lot of heart went in to making this film. And that heartbeat coming to a stop at the end.... just devastating, to a little boy in 76. I'll always love this KONG and everyone who put it to the screen.

I hate people giving it good reviews the ape looks like a turd rolled in hair. The snake looks like paper mache hand painted by a blind person. Let people hate it the way you like it. If you enjoy it it makes no difference what people think. I personally think giant watching monkeys is for simpletons like yourself 😉

One of my all-time favorite movies from childhood. Remember when movies used to be magic and you never wanted them to end? Along with Star Wars, this one was THAT movie for me. Being transported to an island in the Indian Ocean, seeing the mythical beast Kong, and falling head over heels with the beautiful Jessica Lange. Ahhh, it's enough to make a teenage boy try to hide in the theater to watch the 2nd showing for free. My most vivid memories of the movie were the characters boating through the fog of Skull Island, Kong holding Jessica Lange in his hand and her beating on his nose, and of course, the heartbreaking end of the last heartbeat. Thank you Dino for taking this then teenager to a magical place.

I saw this version when it first hit the theaters. I was 6 years old at the time. I remember how excited, yet scared I was. That was an exciting time in my young life. My parents got me a King Kong lunchbox, a King Kong shirt and I collected all the Topp’s King Kong playing cards and I had a few posters lol I also remember watching it with my family each time it would air on television. Great times!! I am so thankful to see this released on Blu-ray!! The added Extended TV release is a bonus!! Thank you so much for bringing this underrated treasure to life on Blu-ray for us!

I think this is the only version that end with the love of the two main characters doomed for good for the death of Kong. But, i have to say that jackson`s version of the relationship between the beauty and the beast, was totally taken from this 1976 version. In the original 1933 film, Ann always feared Kong and was very relieve that Kong was shot death.

I just finished the TV cut,WOW!!! It blew me away, so much new Kong stuff and the score is great. I remember watching it when it came on tv but didn't remember all the great added footage. Yes, its bloated and most of the added stuff wasn't really needed but if you love this film, all that stuff will feel like more icing on a yummy cake. It feel more EPIC and the builded up to KONG's entrance is crazy, overstuffed and AMAZING. I've always wanted MORE KONG 76 and now I have it. My Kong dreams are fulfilled! 3 incredible versions of my favorite film now added to my library. I won't be watching the original cut again for a while(I've seen it a billion times at this point any way), The Big Event TV cut will be my go to. Shout Factory did an amazing job with this one in my book. Can't wait to rewatch this christmas, maybe I'll make it a two night event.

I’m sure there’s plenty of 1933 film fans that hate the man in a rubber suit special effect used throughout the 1976 King Kong remake. I did not know that Ray Harryhausen was originally asked to do the special effects! It was Christmas 1975 , and Ray received a telephone call at his London home . It was film producer Dino De Laurentiis . He knew of Ray's burning passion for all things Kong , and also no doubt knew of his previous attempts to bring the untamed beast back in front of an eager public . He explained how he had wrestled the rights away from other interested parties , and was embarking on making the " greatest spectacle in cinema history " . With the backing of Paramount Pictures and $ 24 million , Dino could call on all the creative resources that Hollywood had to offer Ray was eager to hear more . Dino wanted to employ Ray's Dynamation techniques , which had been honed and all but perfected by this point . When Ray asked when he planned on shooting and for how long , Dino replied , " Right away - need to be in theatres for Christmas 1976 ! " This was clearly not enough time to plan and build the creatures . The screen time that an animated Kong needed would mean at least a year of design , building and pre production tests before filming , and then at least another year after principal photography to complete all the interactions between live actors and models . Instead , the film went ahead with a combination of giant animatronic arms for interaction with the main cast and a young , enthusiastic mask sculptor and makeup artist , Rick Baker , who recreated a man - sized gorilla costume . Dino's Kong went on to be the seventh - biggest film at the box office for 1976 , and won an Oscar for Best Visual Effects .

Hot take: I find the 1976 King Kong more enjoyable than the Peter Jackson King Kong. I suppose because it has better pacing, it attempted to explore new ideas in the context of a similar story, and I admire its ambition for its time. There's also only a small group of human characters, which keeps the film focused.

The 2005 version is still the best. But the 1976 version is also good and it holds a special place in my heart.

The 2005 version is more like reading a book. The 1976 version is like seeing a dream. And these are different stories, after all.

There's a bit of false advertising to this film: it was said to be an 'original' film when in 'reality', it's a remake. I would also like to say that this movie shouldn't have been made in the first place due to a number of reasons. It was 'campy' in some scenes. The voice of King Kong, Peter Cullen (widely best known as the voice of Optimus Prime in the Transformers franchise), severely damaged his throat when it came to recording Kong's roars; to the point in which he coughed up blood. It didn't live-up to the hype. And it was released around the 70s, a time in which America was full of apathy.
