King Hussein of Jordan Interview | Jordan | 1972
A fascinating interview with the late king of Jordan. Thames Televisions 'This Week' was granted unique access to the Jordanian Royal Family. We get to see the King and his young family, including the present King (Abdullah) as a child. First shown on British Television on 10/02/1972

King Hussein really was one of the most skilled statesmen of his time. Not only did he avoid the fate of other Monarchies like in Iran, Iraq, Yemen, Egypt or Libya by defeating a fedayeen insurgency and Syrian invasion, but he also kept Jordan as one of the most stable nations in the middle east while maintaining a well trained military, all in spite of it's less than desirable geopolitical situation. Respect to Jordan from the U.S 🇺🇸👍🇯🇴

A very admirable Royal Family. The children were brought up very well with no arrogance. It’s quite sad that the couple divorced while the children were quite young. Princess Muna seems like a lovely and intelligent person. It’s good to know that she is still active and championing nursing and healthcare in Jordan.
This Great King sacrificed so much, for Jordan. No doubt this cost him his health and life. Long May his legacy lives on. RIP King Hussein, The Great. Thanks for sharing.
King Hussein is still talked about and praised to this day in jordan no doubt about it he did good for his people and cared about each and every person under him it didnt matter if you were in the army, if you were a homeless person, or if you were just a normal person with a family you were treated the same and he made you feel as if your status was even with him… thats what my dad taught and told me i never had the pleasure if being alive during his time but if my dad loved him ill do the same…

King Hussein was the first member of a royal family to appear on a British light entertainment programme. He was a guest on This Is Your Life back in the late 50s. The subject of the programme was the legendary RSM JC Lord, who was the Academy Sergeant Major at Sandhurst when HRH was a cadet there.

If the Arab leaders had listened to King Hussein the Arab world would be in a much better shape now. But because most of the Arab leaders are narrow minded and selfish like most of the ignorants who have stupid comments about the late king in this post, the Arab world is now in deep shit. But notice hat Jordan had stayed intact and strong throughout the years. I visited Amman many times ...I love Jordan . Long live King Abdullah II

Advancement and prosperity of any nation is measured by their democracy and respect for one another and without these education, money, golden sand and crystal mountains can do nothing to improve one's life. We are modern society in the USA but among us ignorants who lost those two elements i mentioned above.

Stewart Murray It was very clesr that while King Hussein did not mention Arafat by name, Arafat is ( or was) at the top or near top of the list of those self seeking empire building politicians. The king was very shrewd and patient but his hand was forsed to confront the PLO who were attempting to take over Jordan.

Almost 50 years later and the country is still struggling. Good luck Jordon.
I noticed King Hussein had a sort of YOUNG Sean Connery facial look to him when he was younger and also an OLDER Sean Connery look when he got older. I wouldn;t be surprised if Hussein was a Sean Connery/James Bond fan, as he liked and drove fast cars and so did Bond. They also both survived dangerous plots on their life many times.

*I was wondering why the Jordanian military uniforms are similar to the British....?* A quick search or two revealed that, Jordan first broke away from Ottoman rule in the early 1920s. Hmmm... add that bit of info to the fact that, around that time, the British had been covertly promoting and supporting rebellions against the Ottoman Empire (which eventually contributed to its demise), and I think I've answered my question!

Not that I needed this interview to know, but to summarize our contemporary situation in the Arab World, I put it in few words:- We were in the shit then, we are in the shit now and we will be in the shit for the foreseeable future. But shall we succumb ?? this is a question I pose to the free Arab intellectuals, university lecturers, students, trade unions, doctors, lawyers, engineers, accountants, the Arab masses, in fact all the enlightened Arabs. هــل من مـجيــب؟؟؟؟. شـــكرا.

f mck Thank you very much for this. U R spot on. This is what i'm trying to say to our people. The biggest enemy to unity and democracy, are tribalism and sectarianism. These last two are used by our rulers to stay in power and keep their useless dynastic rule going, and outsiders to keep us divided, sub-divided and fighting each other. Therefore we are weak and easy meal. Nepotism is another tool in the hands of those rulers. In Ireland, the president, as is the queen in the Uk are constitutional and symbols only, but running the country is the job of an elected leadership. Yes agree, that Turkey is finally doing the thing, after years of dictatorship. In fact as a Muslim, these days, my model are Malaysia and Turkey. I want change and unity in the Arab World, but this should NEVER come through the gun, but by the millions of our people. This will never happen without the middle classes- intellectuals, uni lecturers, students, doctors, lawyers, teachers and all trade unions(they are destroyed by the regimes though) etc, these who should lead the masses for change. So far we lost 100s of 1000s people dead and total destruction of some our most beautiful and historical cities, and no solution in sight, not to mention the long lasting hatred and disunity. How many people, we would have lost, if we followed the civil disobedience((no destruction of public or private properties)) and strikes way?? much, much less and the these tyrants will have no place to go. Ireland and Scotland?? well, it is similar because sectarianism is used for political reasons, for example Southern/Northern Ireland. You have been through a lot of blood shed. I'm gland now that is stopped and I wish the Catholic and protestants all the best and unity, though in 20-30 yrs, the Southerners will get their wish, a united Ireland. I've got to stop me here, other wise, I will never stop, it is too bitter. It is a pleasure to hear your opinion and it is valid, truthful and neutral. Cheer you.
@RandyAbbassi

f mck and Bilal Tariq I think I agree with you both. We have barely survived trying to fight back... I think in his later years King Hussein tried to achieve strength through peace, but the problem is peace cannot come without unity. I think the reason we are divided and subdivided as you mentioned is because we keep looking at the step ahead and forget to look at the end of the road. we don't cooperate by looking at the big picture and all we can do is protest and cause chaos. I honestly do not know what the solution is to our tribalism. it takes generations of re-educating to get rid of foolishness.

+f mck You say to abolish clans yet you should know that the Hashemites themselves are a clan, and people followed them because they were a royal clan. Abolishing Arabs clans and tribes i doubt it will ever happen, and i dont see a difference if it was abolished anyway, the same uneducated Arabs would still kill and murder (outside of jordan ofc) tribalism and clanism has been around from the first Arabs, even if it was possible people wouldnt want to go against their origins.
