I had an Uncle who's parent's were divorced and hated each other to the point that on the rare occasions that they did see each other, both would swear that they would outlive the other so they could dance on the other's grave. Both almost made it to 100 before he died first. Sadly she was so physically and mentally deteriorated by this time she was unable to do any dancing. Another Uncle of mine used to call them a prime example of hate being one hell of a motivator. 😅

That’s not a good thing! That woman was his wife hate it or love it. Phillip cheated and so did Charles! The mother came from Nothing and became dead inside forever.

That actor is SO good because he can be play polite, respectful, and seething with unexpressed resentment all at the same time.

When from contemporary letters of members of British aristocracy it is understood that nobody wanted their daughter to get married to Edward. Because of his habit of being indiscreet in his personal life. Even when the other person was married/engaged. Queen Mary wanted Elizabeth Bowes Lyon for her Bertie from the beginning but she was infatuated with somebody else. Only when that person didn't return her feelings, did she accept Bertie's courtship.

Wallis Simpson was not the only reason for the abdication, King Edward was too close to German authorities during pre war.

No that came later. It was all about the Head of the Church of England not being able to marry a Divorcee. The Germans treated him in exile with the protocols of a reigning monarch and being vain, foolish and stupid he loved them for it.

There had been tensions between Germany and the rest of Europe whilst his father was still on the throne and Edward would have known that since King George V gave him access to state papers to prepare him for his ascension, he abdicated his throne then went straight to Germany to negotiate getting it back so he could have Wallis as his Queen. He was a spoilt, selfish, treacherous parasite had he been anyone else he would have been tried for treason and back then it carried the death sentence. Instead he was exiled to France and lived in luxury provided by the brother he would have happily de-throned and who took on HIS responsibility and the stressed killed him. Edward spent his life entertaining his wealthy friends and partying his way through life

There’s a documentary here on KZread that details the plot by the Archbishop of Canterbury’s involvement in the abdication. Wallis was, of course, one of the reasons, but Edward wasn’t very religious and more than willing to break traditions. The Archbishop considered him a threat to his power and decided he had to go.

She recounted how wildly popular the dashing Edward was when he first came to town and it was exactly like that song "I danced with a man who danced with a girl who danced with the Prince of Wales." Later when the Windsors first came to America just before the war the A list hostesses all competed to "Get" them and they were deluged with invitations to the best country houses from Pebble to Tahoe. Still later after a trail of untipped servants, outrageous overseas phone bills etc they were reduced to mooching off the C list. Dreadful people.

Should be known, when he abdicated he actually took a number of state owned objects with him. Such as the crown of the Prince of Wales. It's unknown if he ever tried to sell it but it was returned to the UK after his death

@@markc-ru4qz Her engagement ring, I am sure. Crown jewels are still disappearing, and they belong to the British crown are considered on loan for life to members of the royal family. So, in essence, they are stealing or else some of their trusted servants are stealing. A couple of things the current Princess of Wales had have disappeared. I honestly don't think she would be that naive. Someone needs to look at the servants. by now though, as you said, it would be unrecognizable reset into multiple smaller pieces.

We, across the Pond, have had a similar theft problem in more recent years. Britain had the Duke of Windsor & we have (still, much to my frustration) our very own Grifter, #Dolt45.

I loved King Edward's character on The Crown Alex Jennings is an incredible actor.

This series continues to amaze -- it is superbly written and acted.

I'm new to the Crown. I recently finished season 1 and I'm making my way through 2 right now. I've been very much drawn to the storyline of Edward and Elizabeth. I think its the intertwining of family, faith, and duty and how both Edward and Elizabeth navigate those ideals that's been the most fascinating for me. I'm amazed at how well Claire Foy captures the turmoil of balancing her duty as the sovereign and her Christian desire for forgiveness when it comes to Edward.

He tried to have their family killed during ww2 so that he could turn the UK into Nazi rump state, and take the crown back. The Queen Mother was right to hate him. He reportedly spoke positive of Hitler when he met Nixon in the 70's. He is not a good dude. His ouster because of Wallis was just an convient solution.

It was easier to forgive him because at that point she did not know of his betrayal of her father at the start of the war.

Following up on this story with some research out of curiosity due to The Crown, I was shocked and appalled by what Edward did.

TBH Queen Elizabeth was a chip off the old block. She may have appeared lovely and fluffy in public but there was a heart of stone and ice running through those veins. No empathy for those less fortunate and far too greedy for her own good.

She was bitter for sure! Elizabeth, queen mother, all of them shut him out but when Charles wanted to marry a divorcee, they allowed it. Camilla was the reason Charles & Diana split. That family is toxic AF & one day they will be judged for not forgiving. How hateful they treated Edward and Wallace til the day they died. It’s disgusting. Prince Harry never consorted with Nazi’s. Nor has he tried to take his brother’s place in line. Edward wanted to to allow the Nazi’s to oust his brother. Harry just asked his brother to befriend and treat his wife like a family member and friend. Harry has done a lot of good I. The world. William has just lived off his position.

It was a family matter and not a public matter. I think the same can be applied today.

Wrong. It was very much a public matter. Had Edward become king the UK would have capitulated to Hitler and we'd all be speaking German and eating sauerkraut und bratwurst. You can't expect them to get all the details correct. Vanessa Kirby did a great job portraying young Princess Margaret, but she looks nothing like her. Claire Foy also did a great job portraying young Queen Elizabeth II. She even won two Emmys for it. She looks nothing like her either.

It already has Harry has basically been disowned by the Royal Family because. He put his family last, & money first so now he's out. He could have waked away quietly like his uncle Prince Edward (his fathers youngest brother) did. But he chose to air all his & the families dirty laundry out in the open. If Harry had wanted to have a quite lifestyle away from the cameras. & formal court duties, then no one would have minded. It was the public interviews for money that basically. Caused him to by shunned by the family.
