King Crimson - Elephant Talk

Contrary to some in the commentariat, it wasn't all doom and gloom in King Crimson. This was a fun time in the band. Belew was in great form, turning in a handsome performance with a great guitar break. Often, he’d turn back to his amp to get some feedback out of it, and as the thing howled and complained, Adrian would look up at me and give me a wink as if to say: “what did you think of that?” Cute song, great lyric, and it’s a pretty steady tempo that feels good to me! It’s the sort of thing you’re playing and thinking everything’s OK with the world. Fripp’s little chromatic fill at 3’51” is definitely good news. #billbrufordsearthworks

You’re exactly correct that’s what’s special about this record & KC era it just landed on earth with its own thing I saw the tour in 1982 and I still marvel that not only was the music crazy but all four guys were playing instruments and/or devices that didn’t look or sound like what other people had (stick, guitar synths, Simmons electronic drums, ring mod boxes with new controls, etc) and that’s still true looking back at the video 40+ years later

I was 16 when I bought this album (from my hard-earned money working as a supermarket assistant). I did that based on a favorable review in some magazine, and a desire to widen my musical horizon. In my 'circles' it wasn't normal back then to buy King Crimson albums, but I just thought 'What the heck' and shelled out the cash. Boy, was I happy when I got home, my parents weren't there, and I could play the music as loud as I could stomach. It sounds funny, but I felt 'proud' to have gotten this music into my life. So I made a cassette tape and took it up to school. We had a cantina where we could play our own music on Friday afternoons. I pushed 'play', 'Elephant Talk came up', and right away I saw the most beautiful girl of the school get up and dance, with movements that made me weak in the knees. I took that moment as a reward for having had the guts to delve into King Crimson. A moment to never forget.

@@sunsetman22 They always had fun on stage. It was studio recording that presented the biggest hurdle to the band. Sadly, the 80s were no exception. They had a great time recording discipline, with Fripp reportedly being "very excited". However, when it came to recording beat, friction within the band started to form. Apparently, Adrian even dismissed Fripp from the studio, told him to get out. Fripp, subsequently, disappeared for 3 days after the incident. They got him back into the studio and they finished the album. By all accounts, King Crimson had broken up by 1982. Yet, somehow, they just kept going to produce three of a perfect pair on 1984.

Very true. A quick look at Fripps videos with his wife will shoot down any belief that he is as serious as he looks when performing

@MarceloKatayama According to Belew in the recent doc, the band didn’t ‘break up’: he was suddenly and hurtfully fired by Fripp. Still seems like it stings 40 years later. He thought they were collaborators and equals but realized he was just a disposable hired gun.

I first heard this song on Friday's in the early 80's. Blew my mind. But I had seen Bill Bruford and his band at a "Sunday" concert at Folsom Field in Boulder, Colorado before then. I grew up in the area and went to a few of those concerts. Got to see 6 or so acts over the course of the day. Great way to catch some rays, get a little buzzed and stoned, and enjoy the day. Enjoyed listening to Bill and his band play.

Dear Bill, I need to let you know the first time I have seen KC , it was in Paris, just after Beat got out , and I was just completely smacked by the sound you did produce with only 4 guys, I thought there was a tape for some minutes, and just realized Tony with its Stick and the others guitar players was able to generate that much sound. Really fantastic, and I sticked to it, until today, I still enjoy this set up and the albums you did altogether. THANK YOU very much.

I was a bellman at the Phister hotel (Milwaukee’s only five star hotel) in the 90’s and met these guys when they checked in. Super friendly and they left 6 tickets for me to hand out to whomever I chose.I took a group of my friends and we had a blast. Long live KC. Oh yeah

IMO Fripps biggest mistake was not inviting Adrian Belew back for the latest KC incarnation. He is such a performer, has the technical skill but makes it looks so easy. He can sell all this complicated material as a party tune.

Actually, I had the privilege and delight to see them 2 or 3 times during this lineup, that is why it is the most familiar to me, although having pretty much all the other albums. I also got to see Adrian Belew a couple of times and Tony Levin once and also The League of Gentlemen Guitarists (or whatever it was called) 😁

Peak 80s Crim right there. The sonic synchronicity is incredible. Still. Thank God Peter Gabriel let T-Lev out on a break now and then. As Sid Smith put it for the Crim liner notes if the era, Fripp knew he needed Bill.
