    Kinetico are the best. Uses least salt and works 10 times better than other brands. I got the 2060s and it kicks minerals ass. Best $2500 I have spent in years, and it's worth more. I love it. My 10 year old system sucked, used tons of salt and still didn't work good. The Kinetico sips salt and works way, way better. Better water pressure and never ending softened water. I have well water and now it's more pure than the municipal stuff. Great product.

    Oml it's just comedic 😂 thanks, it was 9:47 pm I think and my teacher had sent me a message yesterday and I was checking my grades and seeing how I did on her lab test (I didn't study..) but then saw "I saw you didn't do the water softener assignment. You can turn it in on Thursday or else it will be a permanent zero" and I'm like "ITS LAST MINUET BUT IM DOING IT! I JUST STUDIED THE HECK OUT OF THIS MODULE -- IM READY!!" and when researching, I only found sales people, but then I found this and it was all the info I needed! thanks!! You're a life-saver 😆😆

    I have a TDS tester. Since it detects salt as well as other dissolved solids then I suppose it won't detect any change in the hardness since the resin exchanges one dissolved solid for another. Which would explain why the the soft water measures higher in TDS than the well water which doesn't have any salt in it. Something doesn't seem right. I hadn't bought any salt for the system in over a year so I checked for bridging and found the salt cavitated. It uses salt now but well water still has lower TDS than the soft water so am still thinking a TDS meter won't work with a water softener since it detects salt. I just can't understand why the well water has lower TDS. I think it should be the same if it exchanges part for part. My system is a Kinetco.

    John Last . Hi John, sorry it took so long to respond; it has been a busy summer so far, and time got away from us. I contacted one of our in-house chemists to make sure to get the straight answer. This is how he responded. John, I think I can clear up this matter. First let’s start with what is TDS. TDS stands for “Total Dissolved Solids”. It is a measure of dissolved substances in water. Minerals, metals, salts etc. The unit of measure is mg/L or ppm. That is to say that it is the weight of the dissolved substances in known volume of water. The only way to measure this is by evaporating a known volume of water and weighing the solids. This is not a very convenient test, and is usually only performed in Labs. It is however possible to obtain an “estimate” of TDS by measuring a solutions “Specific” or “Electrical” Conductance (EC), and applying a conversion factor to derive the estimated TDS. This is how all TDS meters work. Pure water will not conduct an electric current, but when solids are dissolved in it , it will. This is easily measurable. To convert this measurement to an estimated TDS value, the Manufacturers typically put in a resistor to cut the signal in half. The next part is a little tricky. The ion exchange process takes place on an equivalent basis. Simply put, everything has to exchange equally. The Calcium in the water (the Hardness) has +2 charge, Sodium on the other hand has a +1 charge. So it take 2 Sodium’s to exchange for 1 Calcium. Now here is where it gets tricky. Calcium has a molecular weight of 40, Sodium has a molecular weight of 23. Since you need 2 Sodium’s, that makes the Sodium weight 46. On a strictly weight basis, 2 Sodium’s will be about 15% heavier than 1 Calcium. That is why the TDS of the Soft water will always be higher than Raw water, (remember TDS is weight per unit volume). I hope this clears up any confusion. Ed R. | Senior Research Scientist | Kinetico Incorporated | Newbury, Ohio |

    Thank you for the response and that confirms my idea of how this meter works. My refrigerator filter seems to lower the reading a little so I suspect the charcoal in the filter may grab some of the salt since it usually reads a little lower than my well and tap water, but not always.

    Hi, Just bumped into this ... i don't live int he US - but your help would be highly appreciated. We have hard water with 750 TDS. I understand that using a softener doesn't necessarily change the TDS, but rather increase as per some comments here. Anyway, my question is, would using a softener change the taste of water? If so, to what degree?

    Hi Rajan, Taste is very subjective and it will depend on what is in your water. I have a well with iron and the water tastes and smells metallic. With the softener, that is mostly gone-- I can still detect it, but barely. If you have only hardness (dissolved limestone) a softener may not affect the taste very much. But this is an opinion, based on my taste buds.

    I was hoping to learn how/when/if resin wears out and needs to be replaced or does it last forever.

  • @kinetico

    @kinetico

    9 жыл бұрын

    Uncle Tod's Drum Lessons Maybe not forever, but resin can last a long time ( many decades) unless there is something in the water that deteriorates it. Iron is one thing that that will clog up the resin and cause it to malfunction. Also chemicals could attack the plastic and eventually cause it to break down. For most people this is not an issue, and the mechanical (or electrical with other brands) parts need replacement before the resin is worn out. We have a lot of Kinetico's out there still working after 20+ years with no service calls.

    Why was a water softener place on the hot water of (somebody house) only and not all the cold. The cold water for the fridge is not soften and every cold tap, I find that weird. Please explain. were they being cheap.

  • @kinetico

    @kinetico

    +Luis Diaz Hi Luis, This is typically done to protect boilers and hot water tanks. Also some people are used to the taste of their well and find softened water to have no "taste". Personally, I have a well with both dissolved rock (hardness) and iron. I can't stand the taste (or the iron stains), so have both a softener for the whole house (hot and cold) and also a reverse osmosis drinking water system on the kitchen sink (separate cold water tap). While it could have been to save money, my guess would be that there was another reason in the home you saw-- but this is just a guess...

    Hi Roland Weeds & GattaSplatta Man, Sorry for the delay in replying, I've been really busy making some new videos, and haven't checked KZread in a while. The Sodium or Potassium ions are released into the water by the resin and they stay in solution in the water-- but it is a fairly small amount. If I remember correctly, a typical gallon of softened water contains about as much sodium as in a slice of white bread. If you are on a restricted diet or concerned about any possible health effects of increased sodium or potassium we highly recommend talking to your doctor prior to getting a softener.

    Hello, This may sound a bit silly, but Is the ammount of released sodium or potassium from the process enough to affect people who must have diets very low in those elements?

  • @alyssashoemaker3414

    @alyssashoemaker3414

    RmSoup yes! It is. Salt water softeners give off very little chloride and sodium, but people with health problems with sodium can buy these and they are potassium ones and instead of using salt, they use resin (I think) which is naturally produced by plants. Now keep in mind, it is muuuuch less potassium or sodium (whatever you replace the ions with) than the amount of sodium that you eat in your food. If you're on a diet where you cannot consume sodium, potassium, chloride or ect. that your water contains because you're allergic or something, then get a different type of water softener. The only types I've heard of are the potassium ones and the ones that use alot of salt (ours). This is explained so well, because I spent the day studying for my test in science tomorrow. My grade is a D- even though I understand everything just fine, so I've decided that I HAVE to get A's in things from now and on. I've made it my own challenge, even though some of the things she teaches aren't even correct. This year is to prepare me for highschool, so I'm gonna success in all my classes! wish me luck!

  • @kinetico

    @kinetico

    9 жыл бұрын

    Kyle Homan Hi Kyle, sorry it took so long to answer. It's been a busy few months. It is the sodium ions that are released into the water, so it is not the whole salt molecule (sodium chloride). Also it is a really small amount, so even with very hard water, a softener shouldn't add enough sodium to be able to taste it. On the other hand, the hardness that is getting replaced is very noticeable, as a little hardness goes a long way-- so even small amounts is apparent (residue, soap scum and etc). Hope this helps!

  • @kinetico

    Hi James, if you haven't called a tech already, I would probably try putting a bag or two of softener salt in it first, and see if it makes a difference. You can usually tell if the softener is working by the feel of the water in the shower-- if it feels smooth and slippery the softener is likely working. It it feels sticky and squeaky it probably isn't and you should call the tech for service.

    +james hawkins +Kinetico water systems +james hawkins ____this is a SHAM. I have no reason to defend this company, but my family has operatrd a softerner/RO mom and pop , SINCE 1950...1950!!! I HATE IT when my freinds are naked in their showers all wet squeegeing and wiping after. thats so dumb and a wsste of time and thats just ONE thing you wont ever have to do anymore. but the main thing..the unit itself is a major luxury product. its nice and technilogocal. you may be quoted 500_800 for one..but i KNOW its PLASTIC AND CRAP. only a FEW softerners out therr are REAL ONES not knock offs and they last 10 + yesrs. those 500 dollar ones at sears. ..your looking at 1.5 yesrs ..ya thats right. 1.5 vs 10 YEARS. so i hope i was informative to you all....(take it from the son of an HONEST MOM AND POP SHOP) FAMILY owned softener company in a small quaint town. :) have a great day!!
