The book is amazing but I hate that they change a lot for the show. But I understand it’s not going to be exactly the same. Especially since the book was written in the 70’s.

The book is amazing and the audiobook is great too. Highly recommend reading and listening both.

Not only are they not married they JUST met it is just one of the things that changes how you feel about or connect with the characters. I am all for it!!!!! I am excited to take a brand new adventure with these characters reading the book. Like a multiverse revealed. Well done to the author and the showrunner!!!

I know a lot of people who are frustrated by Dana and her actions in 1815, but I like her both as a character and the actor who plays Dana. I'm so happy to be introduced to Mallori Johnson. I enjoyed her performance in this. 3:18 Good point about Kevin and Dana not being married. I think it does reflect modern relationships better that they're not married. But maybe they could've been on a few more dates before this starts happening to Dana. I saw the chemistry between the two lead actors, so to me it felt authentic for Kevin to be torn about wanting to help Dana, yet them not really knowing each other that well at the moment. I'm hooked on the show!

I want season 2 ASAP please. I love the book too. I admit I had not heard of the book until I watched the show. Then of course I had to read the book. I also listened to the audio book and it is amazing. I actually added Kindred for Spring reading for my history class. Don't worry they are juniors and seniors reading and discussing it. Wish Octavia Butler was still with us so that we could thank her for such an amazing story.

loved the show so much! i honestly am interested in reading the book now too. never seen anything like this. hoping we get a season 2!

One of best series for 2022. Amazing writing and storytelling. It's definitely worth watching and recommended. The series should win awards. All cast members acting was brilliant. Can't wait to see next season.

Great interview, great show, so sad it's been cancelled after only eight episodes. It was such a great adaptation of the book with some minor changes which i thought worked really well. The casting and directing is A grade. It just doesn't make sense that this show was cancelled so quickly.

This show is probably one of the best shows there ever was. Can't wait Season 2

I'm dying for Season 2, literally dying 😭

I am invested in this adaptation but wish The Dana of the book would have been used. To make her unmarried and the type to swipe for sex chips at her character and intelligence. It also implies that Black ladies are still unworthy of marriage hundreds of years later. I disagree with the man who made the change. I don’t think Ms. Butler would be okay with the change.

I really disagree with that. Black women are moving away from letting a husband and children define their character. In fact, nowadays, we're seeing most women go unmarried and BY CHOICE. Octavia was much more ahead of her time than people give her credit for, and I would like to believe that especially applies to women. The change is more than welcomed, and relevant.

Wow! What a simplistic and misogynistic way to think of women, irrespective of race? First, a woman’s worth is not defined by being married, nor is it defined by her sexuality. The fact that the character is 26 years old, who is on path to becoming a screen writer, with her own monetary means, just isn’t enough to make up for her being tied to someone?? There are lots of things I do not like about Dana’s character, but her worth as a woman is simply not one of them.

Season one felt like the ending was awkward or incomplete vs a cliffhanger. Can't wait for season 2

I don’t think it’s as good as the book, but I hope we get multiple seasons to finish the story. I thought it was going to be a miniseries, I’m worried that it will be cancelled before the story wraps up.

Yes! I feel like really special things based on one book should automatically be marked for making as a mini-series from the get-go. More than anything, I'm so glad this has brought attention to a black sci-fi writer that some television/movie sci-fi fans were not aware of.

This is too much of a cliffhanger. I need to read the book.

OK , WOW!!!. I just started the series, on ep. 4 now, so intrigued with it all, I have to see what happens next.

Okay, I haven't read the book. However, these episodes were seating edge of my bed. I didn't realize it were ONLY 8 EPISODES. I WANT MORE!!! I WANT MORE!!! Reading is fundamental, When I first seen it pop up on my Hulu screen, I was like, "Nope, I don't want to see A salve movie, didn't realize I was setting myself up for this Amazing Series. Emotions ran high, especially with the last episode. Dana, "Mallory Johnson" You have a special Talent being one of your First and hopefully not your last. All of the Characters in this series played a great part. I hope Season 2, will be just as phenomenal! I can't wait!

Same reason I skipped on it for a while. I have personal knowledge on part of my family's (and my husband's) history and I didn't know if I should watch it or read the book. I'm glad I did.

If this show doesn’t get a season 2, so help me…

I really hope this is picked up for Season 2. I love Outlander, but what does time travel look like for a person of color....yeah....it's going to be very different. The mystery of how the house figures into this story will be revealing...so please DO NOT DISAPPEAR!!!!

@@yourerightimwrong4567 sadly I have not, I was familiar with the book prior to the series and some of the story that had been changed, like the time, the marriage, but I really should dive in deeper, rather than a cliff notes version of the book.

I don’t like they switched it up from the book. Kevin and Dana were married in the book. And Dana mom died and was never present in the book.

@@chelseaap I agree with you. I also felt like their were things that Dana herself just wouldn't have done once she realized when she was. She seems like she's supposed a smart and intelligent person. Baring that in mind, she would have known that doing something like reading in front of white people in 1815 would get her whipped or worse. Additionally, because this is the first time Octavia Butler's work has been adapted for the screen, I would have liked an adaptation that was a bit more faithful to the books.

This was an amazing show. I thought it was adapted very well with the changes.

I read this book while incarcerated, I'm thankful that they went over the fact they changed a few key parts.

This isn't kindred, they changed too much, I don't think any of these people have actually read the books, most of their comments about what happens in the book or things they claiming the book said don't sound right, are outright wrong or are confusing. Characters are unrecognizable, it looks they turned Dana into some time traveling Harriet Tubman, there are two many themes being thrown in. Tom's first wife is now some tragic back story for him which is weird. The most we get about them in the book is that she liked to read and Tom hated that so when he was courting Margaret he made sure she didn't like to read first. Pretty sure he only married his first wife for the plantation. None of the clips I've seen of Tom feel like him, Kevin doesn't feel like Kevin, having Dana's mother be alive in the past is random and weird. It doesn't look like a bad show, but it's not the big adaptation of Kindred I've been dreaming of for so long. I love this book, I keep revisiting it, I've lost track of how many times I've gone through it. Damn, I wish this had been faithful. At this rate they may as well just change the name and say inspired by

When I seen that this show was coming out, I hastily ordered the book Kindred on Amazon & read it within 3 days… maybe that was a mistake because I fell in love with the story & was ready to see the pages come to life on screen, to possibly answer some questions that book didn’t give. Watching this series (I’m only on episode 3) it’s almost completely different from the book & I can admit that I’m a bit disappointed 🫤 but I’m invested so I’ll continue to watch it in its entirety with an open mind ❤️

We needed the neighbors to ground the audience. We need them so the audience can understand the timeframe that the movie is in. It keeps reminding us that when they time travel, the time in the actual reality of 2016 stops when they travel.. it’s like having a clock, but a clock would be boring 😅

@@Candaicelovesjesus We don’t need the neighbors to “ground us.” They represent an aspect of seeing how Dana’s situation can be viewed from the outside; from people who have no ties or history with or of her, but it dumbs down expectation that the director has of the audience. He thinks we need this ‘grounding’ aspect to understand what we are watching, when we are those present day neighbors. We can take several perspectives; that of, what if I was Dana, what I do if I was Kevin, why am I mixed up with this crazy family, if I was the uncle. The viewers are fully capable of doing this ourselves. So the neighbors, who are extremely poorly written in, take away from the depth of this adaptation. I don’t know if they were brought in for comic relief, but nothing they do or say is comedic, it is just awkward and takes away screen time from a very intriguing story. I honestly wished the director didn’t change a thing from the what Octavia Butler so overwhelmingly did with her ability to make such a grounded sci-fi novel. It was so detailed that the extras of the series, feel EXTRA.

Does anyone know why it was cancelled?

I found the palace intrigue in Kindred to be similar to that in Edward Jones “The Known World”. Disparate motivations.

A lot of changes from the novel but I enjoyed season one.

I wanted to love this show. It's been many years since I've read the book; I was much younger and much more inexperienced when I found it in my school library, so maybe I just didn't have enough sense to pick up on it if she was the same in the book, but y'all... the way they wrote Dana's character is just stupid. I've been screaming at my computer through half of the series. "Dana, don't talk like that to Tom. Don't separate from Kevin - you don't know when/if you're going to get sent back to the future," etc. She just makes so many bad decisions and comes to extreme conclusions out of almost nowhere. I guess I really just need to read the book again.

I loved the actor's and this story by Octavia Butler, she would be thrilled. Seeing the book on the screen is amazing 👏 😍. I can't wait for season 2, 3, 4, 5....😁🤩 however hope the writers stay as close to the book as possible 😉

Ep8 made me so mad! I hate cliffhangers! & it was the shortest of the 8. I cannot wait a whole year for this & that's IF it comes backI stick to back to the future rules/laws. Wouldn't them going back in time in the 1st place mess with the time quantum...meaning the chain of events happened. Once you've changed the past you alter the future. & I remember on one episode her mother saying she can't go back because she's from a different time yet either way it goes it would still be present day for her as well because she never died. I'm just upset that we didn't get to see her mother in the end, alot of scenes where cut.was pretty disappointed, after being really excited to see how they adapt Butler's beautiful book. They seemed to cut important scenes particularly in the final episode what happens with Dana & the cops? Why is Kevin's sister crying to the neighbors? How does Tom get to Kevin at Olivia's house? How does that lead to Kevin and Alice on horses? Really underwhelming storytelling, and little exploration of the context.

Just when I found a show I actually love and no season 2 it’s so hard for me to find a series to get into so disappointed 🤬

Here’s hoping another streaming network picks up season 2

One of my favorite books and I like the change with adding her mother, but I don't care for the aunt/uncle and the neighbors. Also I hate Kevin lol.

Yes! Please get rid of the aunt, uncle, and neighbors. They, especially the neighbors takeaway so much depth from the story

This show is interesting. Dana discovers another world full of violence, cruelty, prejudice. It is terrible when one person humiliates and enslaves another, depriving him of freedom, will, the right to life. But even in the modern world 2017, a couple is not left alone, violating their private borders, personal life, the right to be independent.

changing kevin’s character completely demolished the story. what a waste of beautiful source material 😢
