Steve you must be extremely proud of your children. As a veteran, i was moved to tears with each and every story. Thank you to your son for playing his guitar and for playing such a beautiful song. You have very special children and I thank you for sharing them with us. Our WWII veterans are passing quickly and it is such an honor and privilege to get to meet them in person. Thank you Meryl and Emmett for such an amazing show and especially for honoring our WWII veterans.

Cheryl Beatty 😳 ‘Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel’ - Dr Samuel Johnson, 18th century English lexicographer. How right he was, as time and again manipulative politicians use the lure of patriotism to divert public attention from their machinations that so often lead to war. Consider the current situation in the Middle East, or the recent turmoil in the Balkans, or earlier conflicts in the Caucasus.

When I was a small child I met the widow of a Civil War vet whose husband had died about 15 years earlier around 1950. She recounted some of his war stories but it was hard to hear them retold through a woman who hadn't actually been on the battlefield and who was over 100 years old. My great grandfather's brother was a veteran of the Spanish American war and he described a battle he had been in but I was 12 and uninterested. My grandfather was a veteran of the first world war but he died before I was born. We lost our last WWI veteran in 2012. My own father was a veteran of the Korean war and I vaguely remember his stories of life aboard ship in the navy. He died when I was 16. My uncle, his brother, was a WWII navy vet and died a couple of years ago. He didn't like talking about the war. While most teenagers are at best thinking about maybe going to college one day, here is a young man who is doing work worthy of a Ph.D. in history who already has discovered his mission in life and is living it. When he writes his book and I know he will, I will buy a copy and read it and keep it as a treasured tome. We need a thousand more just like him.

I have especially appreciated your reports on your parents, genealogy, and your reports on positive stories which we all appreciate given these challenging times. It was also interesting to learn that you're a native of Toledo, OH and a BGSU graduate (go RRRockets!) - I am from this area. Thank you for bringing a positive message to us and perhaps one day I might be able to interview you in one of your segments as you clearly have a following that adores you.
